Culture shock isn’t a clinic term or medical condition. It’s simply a common way to describe the confusing and nervous feelings a person may have after leaving a familiar culture to live in a new and different culture. 51 That can be exciting, but it can also be overwhelming (不可抗拒).

Everyone feels the pressure to fit in at one time or another—whether they’ve lived in the area for days or years. 52  All of your experiences before you came to your new home are part of you, and what makes you special.

Here are a few tips for making sure your new culture doesn’t overpower the old.

Educate people about your culture. Just because you’re the one entering the new culture doesn’t mean you should be the one doing all the learning. Take the opportunity to teacher classmates and new friends about your culture; they may know little about it. 53 Invite them over for traditional dishes from your culture.

Find a support group. You probably left behind good friends and family when you moved, too. You can share experiences.

Keep in touch with home. You probably left behind good friends and family when you moved. If it’s going to be a long time until your next visit, keep in touch. You’ve not only left behind people, but also other things—like your favorite spot to hang out.  54

Remember, the key to getting over your culture shock is understanding the new culture and finding a way to live comfortably within it while keeping true to the parts of your culture they you value.

55 Try not to force yourself to change too fast or to change too many things all at once. You will have your own pace of adjusting.

A. It’s important to be yourself

B. Keep pictures around to remind you of home

C. But the good news is that culture shock is temporary

D. It will also help them to learn more about you in the process.

E. When you move to a new place, you’re bound to face a lot of changes.

F. As long as you find a good combination between old and new, you’ll be fine

G. But don’t feel like you need to change everything about yourself so you can stand out less

Cold weather can be hard on pets, just like it can be hard on people. Sometimes owners forget that their pets are just as used to the warm shelter as they are. Some owners will leave their animals outside for a long period of time, thinking that all animals are used to living outdoors. This can put their pets in danger of serious illness. There are things you can do to keep your animal warm and safe.

Keep your pets inside as much as you can when the weather is bad. If you have to take them out, stay outside with them. When you’re cold enough to go inside, they probably are too. If you must leave them outside for a long time, make sure they have a warm, solid shelter against the wind, thick bedding, and plenty of non-frozen water.

If left alone outside, dogs and cats can be very smart in their search for warm shelter. They can dig into snow banks or hide somewhere. Watch them closely when they are left outdoors, and provide them with shelter of good quality. Keep an eye on your pet’s water. Sometimes owners don’t realize that a water bowl has frozen and their pet can’t get anything to drink. Animals that don’t have clean and unfrozen water may drink dirty water outside, which may contain something unhealthy for them.

47. What do we learn about pets from Paragraph 1?

A. They are often forgotten by their owners B. They are used to living outdoors

C. They build their own shelter D. They like to stay in warm places

48. Why are pet owners asked to stay with their pets when they are out in cold weather?

A. To know when to bring them inside B. To keep them from eating bad food

C. To help them find shelters D. To keep them company

49. If pets are left on their own outdoors in cold weather, they may_____.

A. run short of clean water B. dig deep holes for fun C. dirty the snow nearby D. get lost in the wild

50. What is the purpose of this text?

A. To bring up a problem B. To give practical advice

C. To tell an interesting story D. To present a research result

 Channel Islands

The two main islands. Jersey and Quernsey, are remarkable in that they present a combination of enjoyment and peace and quiet. Neither of the islands is very big(only ten miles long) and so all parts of these coasts are easily reached from the main centers—St. Heller and St. Peter Port. In both these towns and particularly in Jersry’s St.Heller are concentrated the amusements of really big resorts. The nearness of France gives a continental atmosphere; the weather is far better than in England. The other three islands, Jethou, Herm and Sark are small and quiet.

Isles of Scilly

I got a guitar for my birthday, and since then I have been struggling. It’s kind of sad. To be honest, it is surprising how many problems are caused by such little things in the life of a teenage . It has awakened another side of myself within me. And it couldn’t have happened at a worse time.

I’m a senior. I’m going to graduate soon and I know what college I’m going to. And now I have to deal with the little voice in my head constantly reminding me that I’m going to be a rock star., not a scientist. So you can see my problem. A few weeks ago I was given the seemingly simple task of writing a short story. No specifics, no strict rules on organization. Just write. So I sat down to create a beautiful work of fiction that would surprise my teacher and classmates. To be honest, this is an area I generally feel very strong in. Writing , that is. I really enjoy it and such writing tasks used to take the least amount of time. So I was trying to write my story, and across the room lies my beautiful birthday present.

“Once upon a time,” I wrote. Then I stopped, turned in my chair, and stared for a moment at the instrument. And then my reflection started dancing and singing. I wasn’t moving, but it sure was..

So I grabbed my guitar and plucked a string (拔下一根弦). The note sang out pure and heavenly, and there was no stopping what was coming. I sat rocking with my guitar until late into the night. I was sure I was preparing for the future much more efficiently now that I wasn’t spending time writing stories.

Needless to say, no story was written, and many doubts arose in my mind. Since then, I have constantly asked, “Am I normal for not wanting to do my work anymore?” More importantly, though, I learned I am really going to be a rock star.

40. What’s the best title of the passage?

A. Birthday present offers new direction in life B. How I become a rock star

C. The guitar for my birthday D. My writing work

41. The guitar reminds the author that ____.

A. he is going to be a scientist.

B. he is really going to be a rock star

C. he is normal for not wanting to do his work any more

42. Which of the following is RIGHT?

A. The author managed to finish his homework

B. The author was not good at writing stories

C. The author didn’t finish that story

D. The author went to the college as expected

Think of London and you’re likely to think of the city’s famous bright red

double-deckers buses. Think of Thailand’s capital city, Bangkok, and the noisy

tuk-tuk ( 三轮摩托车) may come to mind. Picture the American city of San

Francisco and you might see the city’s trolleybuses.

Imagining what these cities would look like without their red buses, tuk-tuks or

trolleybuses is difficult. They are symbols of these cities that make them different

from anywhere else in the world. However, these city symbols, which are so loved

by tourists, are not always so well loved by their city leaders. City leaders want what

is best for their city, which often means the most modern transport.

In Thailand, Bangkok city authorities have forbidden new tuk-tuks because

they consider them noisy and polluting. However, the ban has largely been

unsuccessful, as it has not changed Thai people’s preference for the inexpensive

tuk-tuks over taxis.

In London, the city’s first ever mayor got rid of the red double-decker buses,

which he thought were old-fashioned, by selling them to other countries. His plan worked,

but Londoners were upset to lose the charming old buses they believed represented the

best of their city. They made their upset felt, when the major came up for re-election last

year. Most Londoners voted for his competitor who promised to bring the bus back. Now

an improved version of the double--decker bus will hit London’s streets in 2012..

As for San Francisco, several trolleybuses remain in use but mainly as tourist

attractions. They are too slow to be used for anything other than scenic trips.

City transport symbols may have a place in their city people’s hearts, but it seems

they are increasingly out of step with the modern world. As Londoners have proved, their

continued life depends on people’s willingness to fight for their survival.

36. What’s the purpose of writing the first paragraph ?

A. To show the cultural significance of several cities’ unique transport systems

B. To introduce some old-fashioned means of transport, which are symbols of

three tourist cities.

C. To use the old transport symbols to attract more tourists to visit the cities.

D. To explain why those cities are popular with tourists around the world.

37. Bangkok’s ban on tul-tuks is unsuccessful due to ____.

A. people’s unawareness of environmental protection

B. tourists’ preference for tuk-tuks over taxis

C. the lack of severe punishment for violation(违规)

D. Locals’ willingness to take the tuk-tuks

38. The London double-decker bus is returning mainly because ____.

A. it is an improved version B. the new mayor also loves it

C. it is popular with tourists D. Londoners fought for it

39. We can conclude from reading the passage that ____.

A. tourist cities will lose their charm if their old transport symbols disappear

B. a modern city should get rid of inefficient old transport

C. old city transport symbols now face the problem of survival

D. the writer is in favor of keeping the old city transport symbols
