阅读下面短文,根据所读内容在表格中的空白处填人最恰当的单词。

注意:每个空格只填一个单词。

Researchers  from  the  University  of  Michigan  reported  that  empathy(感情移入),the  ability

to  understand  other  people,  among  college  students  had  dropped  sharply  over  the  past  10  years.

That  could  be  because  so  many  people  have  replaced  face  time  with  screen  time.  Today,  people spend more time alone and are less likely to join groups and clubs.

But there is another explanation. Turn on the TV, and you’re showered with news and reality

shows  full  of  people  fighting,  competing,  and  generally  treating  one  another  with  no  respect.

Humans learn by example---and most of the examples on it are anything but empathetic.

There  are  good  reasons  not  to  follow  those  bad  examples.  Humans  are  socially  related  by nature.  Having  relationships  with  other  people  is  an  important  part  of  being  human—and  having empathy  is  decisive  to  those  relationships.  Researchers  have  also  found  that  empathetic  teenagers are  more  likely  to  have  high  self-respect.  Besides,  empathy  can  be  a  cure  for  loneliness,  sadness, anxiety, and fear.

Empathy  is  also  an  indication  of  a  good  leader.  In  fact,  many  top  companies  report  that empathy  is  one  of  the  most  important  things  they  look  for  in  new  managers.  Good  social  skills---including  empathy—are  a  kind  of  “emotional(情感的)  intelligence”  that  will  help  you  succeed  in many areas of life.

What’s  the  best  way  to  develop  empathy?  For  starters,  let  down  your  guard  and  really  listen to  others.  One  doesn’t  develop  empathy  by  having  a  lot  of  opinions  and  doing  a  lot  of  talking.  In addition,  you’d  better  volunteer  at  a  nursing  home  or  a  hospital,  be  a  member  of  a  club  or  a  team, have a “sharing circle” with your family, or spend time caring for pets at an animal shelter.

Attitude  is  an  internal(内在的)  state  that  influences  the  choices  of  personal

action  made  by  the  individual(个人).  Some  researchers  consider  that  attitudes  come

from  differences  between  beliefs  and  ideas;  others  believe  that  attitudes  come  from

emotional  states.  Here,  we  focus  on  the  effects  of  attitudes  upon  behavior,  that  is,

upon the choices of action made by the individual.

The  kinds  of  actions  taken  by  human  beings  are  obviously  influenced  greatly  by

attitudes.  Whether  one  listens  to  classical  music  or  rock,  whether  one  obeys  the  speed

limit  while  driving,  whether  one  encourages  one’s  husband  or  wife  to  express  his  or

her  own  ideas-all  are  influenced  by  attitudes.  These  internal  states  are  acquired(获得)

throughout life from situations one is faced with in the home, in the streets, and in the

school.

Of  course,  the  course  of  action  chosen  by  an  individual  in  any  situation  will  be

largely  determined by the  particulars  of  that  situation. An  individual  who  has  a strong

attitude of obeying laws may drive too fast when he is in a hurry and no police cars in

sight. A child who has a strong attitude of honesty may  steal  a penny when she thinks

no  one  will  notice.  But  the  internal  state  which  remains  unchanged  over  a  period  of

time,  and  which  makes  the  individual  behave  regularly  in  a  variety  of  situations,  is

what is meant by an attitude.

Attitudes  are  learned  in  a  variety  of  ways.  They  can  result  from  single  events,  as

when  an  attitude  toward  snakes  is  acquired  by  an  experience  in  childhood  at  the

sudden  movement  of  a  snake.  They  can  result  from  the  individual’s  experiences  of

success  and  pleasure,  as  when  someone  acquires  a  positive  attitude  toward  doing

crossword  puzzles  by  being  able  to  complete  some  of  them.  And  frequently,  they  are

learned  by  copying  other  people’s  behavior,  as  when  a  child  learns  how  to  behave

toward  foreigners  by  observing  the  actions  of  his  parents.  Regardless  of  these

differences,  there  is  something  in  common  in  the  learning  and  modification(修正)  of

attitudes.

(1)According to the passage, attitudes  .

A. come from different situations in one’s life

B. are largely affected by one’s behavior

C. remain unchanged in one’s daily life

D. could be chosen according to one’s will

73.The author uses the examples in Paragraph 3 to show  .

A. people often make mistakes when they are not noticed

B. people with good attitudes may sometimes do bad deeds

C. particulars of a situation may influence an individual’s action

D. an individual may change his or her attitude fairly easily

74.Which of the following is TRUE about the learning of attitudes?

A. Attitudes are only learned through one’s success.

B. Attitudes learned in danger will last no more.

C. Copying others’ behavior is not a good idea.

D. Attitudes can be learned from one’s parents.

75.What would be the best title for the passage?

A. Differences of Attitudes.  B. Changes of Attitude.

C. Choices of Attitudes.  D. Nature(本质) of Attitude.

If your friend and family get fat, chances are you will, too. Researchers report in a new study

that  suggests  obesity(肥胖)  is “socially  contagious(传染性的)” and  can  spread  easily from  person

to person.

The large, federally funded study found that to be true even if your loved ones lived far away.

Social ties seemed to play a surprisingly strong role, even more than genes are known to do.

“We  were  shocked  to  find  that  friends  who  are  hundreds  of  miles  away  have  just  as  much impact  on  a  person's  weight  status  as  friends  who  are  right  next  door.”  Said  co-author  James

Fowler of the University of California, San Diego.

The  study  found  a  person's  chances  of  becoming  fat  went  up  57  percent  if  a  friend  did,  40 percent if a sibling(兄弟姐妹) did and 37 percent if a spouse(配偶) did.

Researchers  think  it's  more  than  just  people  with  similar  eating  and  exercise  habits  hanging out  together.  Instead,  it  may  be  that  having  relatives  and  friends  who  become  obese  changes  one's idea of what is an acceptable weight.

Despite  their  findings, the researchers said people should not stop their  friendships. “There is

a  ton  of  research  that  suggest  that  having  more  friends  makes  you  healthier,”  Fowler  said.“So the last thing that you want to do is get rid of any of your friends.”

The  study  was  published  in  Thursday's  New  England  Journal  of  Medicine  and  funded  by  the National Institute on Aging.

Obesity is a global public health problem. About 1.5 billion adults worldwide are overweight,

including more than 400 million who are obese. Two-thirds of Americans are either overweight or

obese.

Much  of  the  recent  research  focus  has  been  on  the  intense  hunt  for  obesity  genes  involved  in appetite or calorie burning. Treatment has been mainly centered on helping individuals curb(抑制)

their  weight  through  better  diet  and  fitness.  The  findings  could  open  a  new  way  for  treating  this worldwide obesity. The researchers said it might be helpful to treat obese people in groups instead

of just the individual.

68. Treating obesity at present is mainly by ________.

A. not keeping in touch with your relatives and friends

B. taking some loss-weight pills

C. going on proper diets and having right exercise

D. getting rid of obesity genes involved in appetite or calorie burning

69According to the new study, obesity is “socially contagious”,which seems to be mainly

caused by________.

A. genes  B. diets C. living conditions  D.  social ties

70. What does the underlined sentence in paragraph 6 mean?

A.It is unwise for us to get rid of any of our friends because of obesity.

B.The best way of preventing obesity is to get rid of any of our friends.

C.If we want to keep fit, we must get rid of some friends.

D.We must make a good choice between obesity and friends.

71. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?

A. The new study suggests about 1.5 billion people worldwide are overweight.

B. Gene is one of the factors that have something to do with obesity.

C. Friendship and obesity are both of great importance.

D. It might be helpful to treat obese people just as the individual instead of in groups.

One  of  the  qualities  that  most  people  admire  in  others  is  the  willingness  to  admit  one's  mistakes.

It is extremely hard sometimes to say a simple thing like “I was wrong about that,”and it is even

harder to say,“I was wrong, and you were right about that.”

I  had  an  experience  recently  with  someone  admitting  to  me  that  he  had  made  a  mistake  fifteen years  ago.  He  told  me  he  had  been  the  manager  of  a  certain  grocery  store  in  the  neighborhood where  I  grew  up,and  he  asked  me  if  I  remembered  the  egg  cartons  (箱子).Then  he related(提到) an incident and I began to remember clearly the incident he was describing.

I  was  about  eight  years  old  at  the  time, and  I  had  gone  into  the  store  with  my  mother  to  do  the weekly  grocery  shopping.  On  that  day,I  must  have  found  my  way  to  the  dairy  (乳品的)  food department where the incident took place.

There  must  have  been  a  special  sale  on  eggs  that  day  because  there  was  an  impressive  display  of eggs  in  dozen  and  half-dozen  cartons.  The  cartons  were  stacked(堆放)  three  or  four  feet  high.  I must  have  stopped  in  front  of  a  display  to  admire  the  stacks.  Just  then  a  woman  came  by  pushing her  grocery  cart  and  knocked  off  the  stacks  of  cartons.  For  some  reason,I  decided  it  was  up  to

me to put the display back together,so I went to work.

The  manager  heard  the  noise  and  came  rushing  over  to  see  what  had  happened.  When  he appeared,I  was  on  my  knees  examining  some  of  the  cartons  to  see  if  any  of  the  eggs  were broken, but to him it looked as though I was the criminal(罪犯).He severely scolded(责骂)

me  and  wanted  me  to  pay  for  any  broken  eggs.  I  protested(抗议)my  innocence  and  tried  to explain, but  it  did  no  good.  Even  though  I  quickly  forgot  all  about  the  incident, obviously  the manager did not.

61.The author was___________when he wrote this article.

A. about 8 B. about 23  C. about 18  D. about 15

62.Who should have been blamed for knocking off the stacks of cartons?

A. The woman  B. The manager.

C. The author.  D. The author's mother.

63.When the manager scolded him,the author____________. .

A. was frightened and cried  B. felt the manager was right

C. did not say anything  D. tried to explain

64.It can be inferred that the author____________. .

A. regrets arguing with the manager for what he didn't do

B. has forgiven the manager for what he did to him fifteen years ago

C. would like to tell people never to be fooled by an egg sale

D. expects the woman to say sorry to him for the mistake she made
