Debbie got up early last Saturday morning. She wanted  1  in Green Park with some ot her friends. She was very happy about it.  2  she was ready, she got on her bike and left for the park – it was on the other side of the town. Suddenly, as she was riding fast, she  3 sirens (警笛). The sound of the sirens was getting  4 , so Debbie looked  5 her to see what was happening. As a result (结果), she fell off her bike and lay in the middle of the road. Luckily, Debbie wasn’t hurt,  6  a car hit her bike. After the car   7  , two men got out and started running.  8  , a police car stopped next to the same car and three policemen got out and started running after the two men. One of the policemen shouted, “Stop the thieves (贼)!”

What I noticed first about my new parrot, Chico, was that he couldn’t fly. His wings had been cut short and he was stuck on the   1  just like us humans. When the weather turned nice, I took Chico outside. I sat him on a branch of a tree, hoping to make him   2 . At first he seemed   3 . He walked back and forth on the branch looking anxious or nervous. He didn’t even flap his wings in an attempt to fly. Somehow he knew he was   4 .
One day Chico got especially excited . He paced back and forth and made an incredible amount of   5 . Then all of a sudden he stopped and let out an even louder scream. Two days later Chico   10  . First I tried to trick him back with food, but he would not come near me. Then I took his   11  and put it away—still he would not come. From that day on, whenever the weather was good I would let him out early and he would fly around and be back before dark. The   14  lasted for two months before suddenly Chico became   15 . The vet said that he had been infected with a disease from the pigeons in the neighborhood. Within a few days he died.
I was very sad. The   16  crossed my mind that if I had not set him free to fly, he would be still alive. But what   17  is there in being a bird if you can’t fly?

I finished my last work of the week and could hardly wait to get home, take off my nursing shoes, and relax.

As I turned to head home, the car disappeared. Then I pulled into my driveway (车道) when the warning light for my gas tank (汽油箱) turned on.
Though so many years have passed, I still thank the old man from my deepest heart.

When my daughter Kelsey was a child, she loved to join me in the garden. To 36 chaos(混乱)in my own garden beds, I provided her with a space of her own, so Kelsey’s Corner was born. There she was 37 to dig and plant as she wished. Over time, that small piece of land grew into a favorite place in the 38.

A boy walked along Carver Street, singing a sad song. He walked with his head down. Once he looked up and noticed the sign across the empty street, painted on the side of an old house. On the sign a big woman with yellow hair and a five-mile smile held out a big bottle. “Coca-Cola. Drink Coca-Cola.” the sign said.
“Boy!” The silence was cut by a sudden cry. He turned around quickly to see who had called.
An old woman was standing at her door.
“You boy! Come here this minute.”
Slowly the boy  1 onto the cold flat stones leading to the old woman's house. When he arrived at her house, she  2 out her hand and wrapped her  3 old fingers around his arm.
“Help me inside, boy,” she said. “Help me  4 to my bed. What's your name?”
“Joseph,” he said.
The old woman on the bed tried to  5 up, raising berselfon her elbow (肘) . Water  6 from her eyes and mouth. The sight of her made Joseph feel  7 .
“I'm   8 , Joseph. You can see that, can't you? I want you to write a will(遗嘱) for me. There's paper and pencil on the table there.”
Joseph looked down at the  9 , and then looked out of the window. He saw the sign again, “Coca-Cola. Drink Coca-Cola.  I want my silver pin to   10 to my daughter."
Joseph bent his small body over the table and  11 the pencil slowly across the paper.
“There's my Bible.(圣经)”The old woman said. “That's for my daughter, too. I want a  12  Christian burial (基督葬礼) with lots of singing. Write that down, too. That's the last - 13 of a poor old woman.”
The boy labored over the paper. Again he looked out of the window.
“Here. Bring it here so I can  14 it.”
Joseph found the Bible, and,  15  the paper inside, laid it next to the bed.
“  16 me now, boy,” she sighed(叹气).“I'm tired.”
He ran out of the house.
A cold wind blew through the  17 window, but the old woman on the bed
  18 nothing. She was dead. The paper in the Bible moved back and forth in the wind.  19 on the paper were some childish letters, which  20 the words, “Coca-Cola. Drink Coca-Cola.”

Mr. West intended to buy his wife a Christmas present, but he was always very busy, so he was never  1 to find time to go to the shops. At last, when it was the week   2 Christmas, and the shops were very crowded, he  3 that he could not wait any longer. He worked in an office, and   4 had lunch in a restaurant, but one day he bought some sandwiches, ate them quickly and went out to a big shop near his office during his lunch   5 .The shop was full of women, who were also buying presents during their lunch hour.
