Two friends visited the zoo together. The zoo was very large and it was 3 6  to go everywhere. They had to decide where and which animal to visit as their time was   3 7. So both of them agreed not to  3 8  after choosing a 3 9  at every fork (岔路口). A road sign at the first fork   4 0  one way to the lion quarters and the other to the tiger hill. They decided on the  4 1  after a 4 2  discussion because lions were “the king of the grassland”. The second showed a division (路口) going separately to the panda and peacock. They 43  panda as it was the nation’s treasure and went its way. Thus they made choices all along the way and each choice meant 44   what they couldn’t help regretting. But they had to make it, and  45  , for it brooked(容忍) no delay. If they hesitated (犹豫不决) they would miss 46   . Only  47  decision could offer more chances for sightseeing and 48   possible regret.   Life is 49  like this—choices often occur that one has to make, for example, between two 50   jobs, two fascinating wooers(追求者). To get one you  51  give up the other——you can get half of it. If you 52  weighing the pros and cons and calculating gains and losses, you will most likely 53  empty-handedness. Don’t be sad about it. 54  you have got half of the desirable things in life——something that is  55  to come by.

Having lived in the house for so long, we found our kitchen looked    21   . We decided it was time to   22  the kitchen, and my husband and I were discussing   23  colors. The children, sitting nearby, suddenly all spoke together:“Not the measuring stick. ”
“No,” I   24   them. “Not the measuring stick.”
The measuring stick isn’t a (an)   25    stick but the kitchen side of the door between our kitchen and dining room. Along the edge we’ve   26   each child’s growth by making a mark showing his or her   27   on every birthday. Over the years, so many colored pens, pencils and    28     have been used that now, this white door is somewhat like an abstract(抽象的) painting.
Names and dates show different    29   , and I can tell by the script(手迹) who measured whom. An eight-year-old   30  to measure her three-year old sister, a grandchild measured her grandmother and my husband did the same to me. At our family    31   , when this door swung back and forth frequently, friends used to stop to    32    the names and dates. When they were asked if they would like to be always remembered, they    33    smiled shyly and went back right up into place,     34  to be measured.
Many of those   35    on the door are still   36   . Some have stopped. Some remain with us only in   37   . When my mother came to see my eldest daughter graduate from university, we measured her, too. It was her last visit to our home.
We haven’ t   38   the new kitchen color plan yet, but one thing is certain: whatever color we choose, the   39   of the kitchen door will still remain    40  , with lots of names and dates in various colors.

The moment happened 30 yours ago but it was still fresh in my memory. I was a college freshman and had   26  up most of the night before laughing and talking with friends. Now just before my first  27  of the day my eyelids were feeling heavier and heavier and my head was drifting down to my desk to make my textbook a   28 . A few minutes nap(小睡)time before class couldn’t   29 , I thought.

What a wonderful place this would be if all of us did our work happily and well. Don’t sleepwalk(梦游)your way through  44  then. Wake up! Let your love fill your work. I had a friend who visited me from out of town and I wanted to show him the CN Tower. It was one of the tallest structures on the earth. So I thought it would offer a(n)   36  sight.
We were standing in line for 45minutes to enjoy the    37   up to the watch point. When we got there, we went around the   38     of the tower and saw the hard wire fence  39     to the structure serving as a barrier. We went back inside to look for the glass floor that provided a direct view   40     . As soon as both of us  41     , we stopped before walking onto it. We found that our legs began to   42  . I stopped for a minute considering the step, taking several seconds to   43     the edge before moving.
And then I had a thought in my mind:“It is far   44     compared to any other floor in this building. There is no real danger to me — it’s    45   an illusion. Look at all the people standing on it, and think about those who have stood on it before.”I began to  46     that step onto the glass floor. I didn’t look down —  47    not for a few minutes.
I walked on the    48   and looked around and thought about how  49   the experience was. I even found myself jumping up and down. There was no  50   , and it was certainly an illusion.
I considered how many things in our lives we  51    and exactly how many of them are actually illusions. I thought about all the things we   52    ourselves from doing because we have  53   ourselves into thinking there’s risk. I thought about all the things that I still have yet to do that appeared  54   . I was glad to discover that although fear isn’t a stranger to me, my desire to live a life without    55   has a much stronger pull.
