The World Trade Organization (WTO) founded on January 1, 1994, aims to encourage international trade to flow as freely as possible, making sure that trade agreements are respected and that any disputes (争端) can be settled.
In the five years since its founding, the WTO has become well-known as one of the world’s most powerful economic organizations, taking its place alongside the World Bank and International Monetary Fund.
The system of global rules for international trade, however, dates back half a century to 1948 when the General Agreement on Tariffs (关税) and Trade (GATT) was formed after World War II.
As time went by it became clear that the GATT had two major drawbacks—the limited areas of trade it covered, and the lack of an effective system to settle disputes.
After seven years of trade talks ending in 1994. the so-called Uruguay Round finally gave birth to the WTO, complete with an effective system to settle disputes and new rules covering trade in services and intellectual property (知识产权).
Even after seven years of talks and 22500 pages of agreements there were still problems, especially the difficult-to-deal-with areas of agriculture and services.
The WTO. with its head office in Geneva, has 135 members with 30 more waiting to join.

A.can do better to settle disputes in more areas of international trade
B.got its members to sign the agreements more easily
C.has got too many areas of international trade to deal with to work effectively
D.didn’t pay enough attention to services and intellectual property

A.take the place of the World Bank and International Monetary Fund
B.have new rules covering trade in services and intellectual property
C.make complete new rules in every area of international trade

If you want to get the most out of the study of a language, you must also read for pleasure: novels, plays, travel books, and so on. And in reading books of this kind the important thing is to get on with the reading; to try to grasp what the writer is going to tell you in the book as a whole. This is impossible if you stop and think over the meaning of every single word which happens to be unfamiliar. You can not enjoy a story if you stop half a dozen times on every page in order to look up words in the dictionary. You may even prevent yourself from understanding the story as a whole by doing this.
When you are reading books of this kind, therefore, you will usually have to rely mainly on the context to help you. If you meet an unfamiliar word, do not let it take too much of your attention from the main thread(主线) of the story. In all probability you will meet the same word again a few pages later on in a slightly different context, and each time you see it that your understanding of it will become more exact.
1.The phrase “to get on with reading” in the passage has the same meaning as “_________”.
A.to try to grasp the meaning of every sentence in the book
B.to try to catch the meaning of every word in the book
C.to try to understand all the writer is going to tell you
D.to try to understand the main idea of the book
2.When you meet new words in reading such kinds of books, you’d better _________.
A.stop and look them up in a dictionary B.stop and think them over
C.try to guess their meanings from the context D.have none of them
3.From the passage the best way to read novels, plays and travel books is _____.
A.to read very slowly B.to read quickly and not too carefully
C.to read very carefully D.to read very seriously
4.The best title for this passage is “___________”.
A.Read for Pleasure B.Get on with the Books
C.Reading Skills D.The Importance of Reading

Do you find getting up in the morning so difficult that it’s painful? This might be called laziness, but Dr. Kleitman has a new explanation. He has proved that everyone has a daily energy cycle.
During the hours when you labor through your work you may say that you’re "hot". That's true. The time of day when you feel most energetic is when your cycle of body temperature is at its peak. For some people the peak comes during the morning. For others it comes in the afternoon or evening. No one has discovered why this is so, but it leads to such familiar monologues as “Get up, John! You’ll be late for work again!” The possible explanation to the trouble is that John is at his temperature-and-energy-peak in the evening. Much family quarrelling ends when husbands and wives realize what these energy cycles each member of the family has.
You can’t change your energy cycle, but you can learn to make your life fit it better. Habit can help, Dr. Kleitman believes. Maybe you’re sleepy in the evening but you must stay up late anyway. Counteract your cycle to some extent by habitually staying up later than you want to. If your energy is low in the morning but you have an important job to do early in the day, rise before your usual hour. This won't change your cycle, but you'll get up steam and work better at your low point.
Get off to a slow start which saves your energy. Get up with a leisurely yawn and stretch. Sit on the edge of the bed a minute before putting your feet on the floor. Avoid the trouble of searching for clean clothes by laying them out the night before. When ever possible, do routine work in the afternoon and save tasks requiring more energy or concentration for your sharp hours.
1.What is the best title of the passage?
A.Change Your Habits B.Save Your Energy
C.Daily Energy Cycle D.Temperature-and-energy Peak
2.If a person finds getting up early a problem, most probably_______.
A.he is a lazy person
B.he refuses to follow his own energy cycle
C.lie is not sure when his energy is low
D.he is at his peak in the afternoon or evening
3.Which of the following may lead to family quarrels according to the passage?
A.Unawareness of energy cycles
B.Familiar monologues.
C.A change in a family member's energy cycle.
D.Attempts to control the energy cycle of other family members.
4.If one wants to work more efficiently at his low point in the morning, he should____________.
A.change his energy cycle B.overcome his laziness
C.get up earlier than usual D.go to bed earlier

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳答案。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Is the customer always right? 1 Shopping is very much a part of a country’s culture, and attitudes to shopping and consumers vary from country to country just as much as climate or taste in food.
Recent economic hardship has given the consumers increased power in Europe because shopkeepers fight to win their share of reduced disposable(可支配的)income. This has meant falling prices, plenty of special offers and a re-examination of what customer service really means.
2 In restaurants in the south of the USA, for example, waiters compliment(恭维)you on your clothes, ask about your day, compliment you on your wisdom of your order and then return every ten minutes to refill your glass and make sure that everything is to your satisfaction.
Anyone who has waited 30 minutes to be served in a restaurant may possible dream of such customer service. 3 In fact, different nationalities expect different types of service. As a friend of mine once told me “By the end of evening I had spent as much time talking to the waiter as to my wife.”
A Chinese-American friend loves telling people about how her Chinese mother shops for clothes. First of all she waits until they are on sale. 4 And later she finds some small fault with the product and demands a further reduction. She never buys anything at the regular price. Could you imagine trying such ways in department stores in other countries?0
Attitudes to service are, of course, affected by employer’s attitudes to their workers. As American waiters heavily depend on tips, they have to provide more service. But is this fair? 5 It might not be a case of “Is the customer always right?” but a case of “How much service is it fair to expect?”
A.People often point to America as an example of good customer service.
B.It is a question of expectations.
C.Do we think it is fair to ask shop assistants to work late evenings or on Sundays?
D.Then she asks for a discount until she gets an even better price.
E. The answer, it seems, depends on which country you are in.
F. The way we shop shows the way we get along with other people.
G. However, do Europeans really want US style service?
