My father woke me 31 early in summer morning when I was fourteen and announced: “ Get up. You’re going to with me to cut the grass.”
The idea 32 my father actually thought I was big enough to help him in his business made me feel proud and 33 (excite). From sunup to sundown my father, my young brother and I worked in the large yards in a rich part of Atlanta, Georgia. By the end of the day I was tired out, 34 I felt good. I had put in a hard day’s labor and had earned $6.
One day my father found some leaves I’d missed and pull me aside. “Clear away these 35 , ”he said firmly , “ and don’t make me have to tell you to do it again.” The message was clear. Today I value the importance of doing a job right the first time. It will never fail to impress the person you are working 36 .
After two years my father told my brother and me that he felt that we were old enough to do lawns on our 37 . Every Saturday during our last two years of high school, we set out early in the morning with the same desire and drive we had gained while 38 (work) under our father.
Taking care of lawns was not exciting or high-paying, but that didn’t matter. It taught me that any job is a good job and that whatever I was paid was 39 than I had before.
In every job I’ve held-from dong lawns to 40 dishes-I have learned something that helped me in my next job. If you work hard enough, you can learn from any job you do.

Until a century ago, bloodletting was used to treat many ailments. Dating back to before the time of Christ, the treatment involved letting a type of worm, called a leech, such blood from the patient. People believed that there were liquids called humors in the body and that these determined a person’s personality and heath. Bloodletting, they thought, restored a balance to these humors.
At the time, little was known of the working of the human body, but people did know that the same liquid, blood, flowed throughout everyone’s body. They knew it was a vital substance, for loss of any great amount of it meant certain death. Thus, they concluded that all diseases were carried in the bloodstream, and that if the body was relieved of bad blood, heath would return. Bloodletting, however, came to be used as a cure-all. Woman were bled to keep them from blushing while members of the clergy were bled to prevent them from thinking sinful and worldly thoughts.
From the 11th to the 18th centuries, barbers were the people to go to if you needed to be bled. This custom explains the significance of the traditional barber’s pole: the white stripes stand for bandages and the red stripe for blood.

C. barbers of long ago D. leeches with special jobs to do
2. The red and white stripes on barber pole symbolize .

C. women who are nurses D. humors in the body
3. Why is bloodletting no longer considered a cure-all?

Because leeches were outlawed
Because barbers were too busy cutting hair.
Because today we know that blood is necessary for health
4. In the second paragraph, the word “Thus” could be replaced by the word .
A. When B. However C. If D. So
5. Ailments means .

Many a young person tells me he wants to be a writer. I always encourage such people, but I also explain that there’s a big difference between “being a writer” and writing. In most cases individuals are dreaming of wealth and fame, not the long hours alone at a typewriter. “You’ve got to want to write,” I say to them, not want to be a writer.”
The reality is that writing is a lonely, private and poor-paying affair. For every writer kissed by fortune there are thousands more whose longing is never rewarded. When I left a 20-year career in the US Coast Guard to become a freelance writer(自由撰稿者), I had no prospects at all. What I did have was a friend who found me a room in a New York apartment building. It didn’t even matter that it was cold and had no bathroom. I immediately bought used manual typewriter and felt like a genuine writer.
After a year or so, however, I still hadn’t got a break and began to doubt myself. It was so hard to sell a story that barely made enough to eat. But I knew I wanted to write. I had dreamed about it for years, I wasn’t going to be one of those people who die wondering. What if? I would keep putting my dream to the test-even though it meant living with uncertainly and fear of failure. This is the shadowland of hope, and any one with a dream must learn to live there.
1. The passage is meant to .
warn young people of the hardships that a successful writer has to experience
advise young people to give up their idea of becoming a professional writer
show young people it’s unrealistic for a writer to pursue wealth and fame
encourage young people to pursue a writing career
2. What can be concluded from the passage?
Genuine writers often find their work interesting and rewarding.
A writer’s success depends on luck rather than on effort.
Famous writers usually live in poverty and isolation.
The chances for a writer to become successful are small
3. Why did the author begin to doubt himself after the first year of his writing career?
He wasn’t able to produce a single look.
He hadn’t seen a change for the better
He wasn’t able to have a rest for a whole year.
He found his dream would never come true.
4. “I wasn’t going to be one of those people who die wondering. What if?” refers to “those .”
who think too much of the dark side of life
who regret giving up their career halfway
who think a lot without making a decision
who are full of imagination even upon death
5. “Shadowland” in the last paragraph refers to .
the wonderland one often dream about
the bright future that one is looking forward to
the state of uncertainty before one’s final goal is reached
a world that exists only in one’s imagination

第二节:读写任务(满分25分)
阅读下面的短文, 然后按要求写一篇150词左右的英语短文.
Honesty is one of the most treasured traditional values in China. The children are taught to be honest when they are very young. At schools the students are also instructed to be honest.
However, with the development of society, we often hear complaints about dishonesty. Reports with the theme of dishonesty often appear in the media. For example, some people try to get rich and live a comfortable life. But they do not work hard honestly, instead they cheat others. They sell something quite ordinary at a very high price. Some people's delaying paying back the loan can serve as another example. Some people, including some college students, get loan from the bank, and promise to pay within, say, 3 years. However, they don't do that.
The dishonest people sometimes can get benefit from their behaviors. So some people assert that dishonesty can bring people benefit, while honesty only makes people suffer. Is that so? Definitely not. It is always true that honesty is the best policy. It pays to be honest. The cheater selling "the treasure" mentioned above will surely be disclosed and punished some day.
On the contrary, if he had been honest, neither the buyer nor he himself would have suffered. The people who do not return money in time will sooner or later become infamous, and will not get the money from others again. If he had acted differently, he would have earned respect and trust, meanwhile, the bank would not have suffered from loss.

【评分标准】 概括准确,语言规范,内容合适,篇章连贯。

I once read a book Rare Air: Michael on Michael 34 by the greatest basketball player in the history, Michael Jordan. While we envy his great achievement in the basketball and business aspects, few of us focus on his spirit of persistence. In the book, he talks about his experience of how he walks on the 35 of success. In order to join the NBA, he put in every effort to strengthen his muscle, to improve his skills 36 training hard.Because of his efforts, he successfully entered the NBA.

第二节: 信息匹配 (共5小题; 每小题2分,满分10分)
阅读下面一篇文章,文章后有七个选项,从A、B、C、D、E、F、G的七个选项中选出五个符合每一段文章主旨大意的选项。
To be a good teacher, you need some of the gifts of a good actor: you must be able to hold the attention and interest of your audience; you must be a clear speaker, with a good strong, pleasing voice which is fully under your control; and you must be able to act what you are teaching, in order to make its meaning clear. (56)__________.
Watch a good teacher, and you will see that he does not sit motionless before his class: he stands the whole time he is teaching; he walks about, using his arms, hands and fingers to help him in his explanations, and his face to express feelings.Listen to him, and you will hear the loudness, the quality and the musical note of his voice always changing according to what he is talking about. (57) _______________.
The fact that a good teacher has some of the gifts of a actor doesn’t mean that he will indeed be able to act well on the stage, for there are very important differences between the teacher’s work and the actor’s.The actor has to speak words which he has learnt by heart; he has to repeat exactly the same words each time he plays a certain part, even his movements and the ways in which he uses his voice are usually fixed beforehand. What he has to do is to make all these carefully learnt words and actions seem natural on the stage. (58)_________________.
A good teacher works in quite a different way.His audience takes an active part in his play: they ask and answer questions, they obey orders, and if they don’t understand something, they say so.The teacher therefore has to suit his act to the needs of his audience, which is his class. He cannot learn his part by heart, but must invent it as he goes along. (59)_________________.
I have known many teachers who were fine actors in class but were unable to take part in a stage play because their brains wouldn’t keep discipline: they could not keep strictly to what another had written. (60)_______________.
A.Characteristics of a good teacher
B.Qualities of a good actor
C.What makes up a good teacher
D.What makes a teacher famous
E.It is not easy for a good teacher to become a good actor.
F.The image(印象)of a good teacher
G.Duties of a good teacher
