A few years ago it was popular to speak of a generation gap, a disagreement between young people and their elders. Parents said that children did not show them proper respect and obedience, while children complained (抱怨) that their parents did not understand them at all. What had gone wrong? Why had the generation gap suddenly appeared? Actually the generation gap has been around for a long time. Many people argue that a gap is built into the fabric (结构)of our society.
One important cause of the generation gap is the chance that young people have to choose their own ways of life. In more traditional societies, when children grow up, they are expected to live in the same area as their parents, to marry people that their parents know and agree to, and to continue the family occupation (职业). In our society, young people often travel great distances for their
education, move out of the family home at an early age, marry or live with people whom their parents have never met, and choose occupations different from those of their parents.
In our easily changing society, parents often expect their children to do better than they did: to find better jobs, to make more money, and to do all the things that they were unable to do. Often, however, the strong desire that parents have for their children are another cause of the disagreement between them. Often, they discover that they have very little in common with each other.
Finally, the speed at which changes take place in our society is another cause of the gap between the generations. In a traditional culture, elderly people are valued for their wisdom, but in our
society the knowledge of a lifetime may become out of date overnight. The young and the old seem to live in two very different worlds, separated by different skills and abilities.
No doubt, the generation gap will continue to be a feature (特点) of American life for some time to come. Its causes are rooted in the freedom and
changes of our society, and in the rapid speed at which society changes.

Today, air travel is far safer than driving a car on a busy motor-way. But still there is a danger that grows every year. Airliners get larger and larger. Some airplanes can carry over 300 passengers. And the air itself becomes more and more crowded. If one large airliner struck into another in midair, 600 lives could be lost.
From the moment an airliner takes off to the moment it lands, every movement is watched on radar screens. Air traffic controllers tell the pilot exactly when to turn, when to climb, and when to come down. The air traffic controllers around a busy airport like London Heathrow may deal with 2 500 planes a day. Not all of them actually land at the airport. Any plane that flies near the airport comes under the orders of the controllers there. Even a small mistake on their part could cause a terrible accident.
Recently such a disaster almost happened. Two large jets were flying towards the airport. One was carrying 69 passengers from Toronto, the other 176 passengers from Chicago. An air traffic controller noticed on his radar screen that the two planes were too close to each other. He ordered one to turn to the right and to climb. But he made a mistake. He ordered the wrong plane to do this. So, instead of turning away from the second plane, the first plane turned towards it. Fifteen seconds later it flew directly in front of the second plane. They avoided (避免) each other by the smallest part of a second. The distance between them was less than that of a large swimming pool. This is an example of the danger that grows every year.

[ ]
A.Traveling by air is as safe as by car.
B.Traveling by air is not as safe as by car.
C.Traveling by car is as dangerous as by air.
D.Traveling by car is more dangerous than by air.

[ ]
A.control all the planes flying near the airport
B.give orders to planes leaving the airport
C.only deal with the planes that want to land there
D.are allowed to handle 250 planes a day
3.The danger of air crashes grows every year because ______.
[ ]
A.airliners are getting larger and air traffic is becoming heavier
B.a pilot does not always hear a controller's order
C.a controller is likely to make more and more mistakes
D.airports can hardly serve the growing number of airplanes
4.The example in the passage is to show that ______
[ ]
A.air traffic controllers are often careless
B.air traffic controllers should pay much attention to avoiding accidents
C.it is difficult for airplanes to avoid terrible accidents
D.two planes should not fly too close to each other

My name is Christopher. My family came to America before I was born. In two weeks I am going to be married, and my fiance (未婚妻), Samantha, and I expect to be very happy. We do not plan to have honeymoon because we want to spend two weeks setting up our own new business as real estate agents (房地产代理商).
My mother, who is very traditional (传统), says that our plans are unreasonable. She thinks that we should just spend the two weeks on a holiday in the Caribbean. In her days, and in the old country, young couples didn't start businesses together. Instead, the man went out to work, and the wife stayed home to raise a family.
Both Samantha and I want children in the future, and together we plan to raise them. Needless to say, our plans and my mother's views don't agree. I suppose it's hard for my mother and father to understand our point of view. They are used to another way of setting up a marriage and a life.
Another thing that worries my parents is the fact that Samantha and I are going to be spending seven days a week on our business until it is running smoothly. As my mother has pointed out to us, such a timetable will leave us little time for socializing or for a night in the town. My mother says a young couple should enjoy themselves and get to know each other under less exciting conditions.
Actually, Samantha and I know each other pretty well. We both work hard for our goals, and neither of us minds giving up weekends for a while. We are young and enthusiastic (热心于事业的).

To get cash out in the 21st century, you won't need a bank card, a PIN (个人识别编号) or even have to move a finger. You will simply have to look the cash machine straight in the eye, declares National Cash Registers, a multinational company that makes automated teller machines, or ATMs. NCR has shown its first example machine that it believes is the future of banking. Instead of asking you for your PIN on a screen, the Super Teller-Stella for short-asks you orally through a loudspeaker to look straight ahead while an infrared camera turns to your head, then your eye, and finally takes an infrared photograph of your iris (虹膜). For indentification (识别) purposes, an iris picture is better than a fingerprint, with around 256 noticeable characteristics compared with 40 for fingerprints. This means that the chances of someone else being recognized in your place is about 1 in . Sweet potatoes are fat-free, high in fiber and full of the vitamins that research suggests reduce your risk of life-shortening diseases. To stay healthy, we must eat more fruits and vegetables, and sweet potatoes are a great source of beta carotene (胡罗卜素) and other carotenoids. According to a study of the diets of almost 90,000 nurses, eating about one cup a day of fruits and vegetables rich in carotenoids (which the body turns into vitamin A) can cut your risk of stroke in half and reduce your risk of heart disease by 22 percent. Other research suggests beta carotene protects against breast, lung and stomach cancers.
Beta carotene is the most famous member of the carotenoids family. In fact, a medium-sized sweet potato contains nearly 12 mg of beta carotene (anti-aging experts usually suggest 6 to 11 mg per day ). Sweet potatoes are also a low-fat source of vitamin E. Research has linked high E diets with a lower risk of heart disease. This vitamin pill in an orange jacket also packs a vitamin C punch-it has more C than apricots (a kind of fruit ). Researh suggests that vitamin C protects against ailments ranging from cataracts (an eye disease) to cancer. In addition, a UCLA (University of California Los Angeles ) study linked high vitamin C diets with a longer life. Recent studies have showed that antioxidant vitamins C, E and beta carotene fight a fierce battle against free radicals (自由基), which cause cell (细胞) damage and lead to various
illnesses. Therefore, to keep fit, eat more sweet potatoes.

Greenspace facilities (设施) are contributing to an importrant degree to the quality of the city environment. Fortunately it is no longer necessary that every lecture or every book about this subject has to start with the proof of this idea. At present it is generally accepted, although more as a self-proved statement than on the base of a closely reasoned scientific proof. Recognizing the importance of greenspaces in the city environment is a first step on the right way, this does not mean, however, that enough details are known about the functions of greenspace in towns and about the way in which people are using these spaces. As to this subject I shall within the scope of this lecture, enter into one aspect (方面) only, namely the recreative function of greenspace facilities.
The theoretical separation of living, working, traffic and recreation which for many years has been used in town and country planning, has in my opinion resulted in more attention for forms of recreation far from home, while there was relatively little attention for improvement of recreative possibilities in the direct neighbourhood of the home. We have come to the conclusion that this is not right, because an important part of the time which we do not pass in sleeping or working, is used for activities at and around home. So it is obvious that recreation in the open air has to begin at the street door of the house. The city environment has to offer as many recreation activities as possible, and the design of these has to be such that more required activities can also have recreative aspect.
The very best standard of living is nothing if it is not possible to take a pleasant walk in the district, if the children cannot be allowed to play in the streets because the risks of traffic are too great, if during shopping you can nowhere find a spot for enjoying for a moment the nice weather, in short, if you only feel yourself at home after the street door of your house is closed after you.
1.The importance of greenspaces in the city environment ______.
[ ]
A.has been recognized
B.is paid little attention to
C.is accepted on the base of scientific proof
D.is still unknown
2.For many years town and country planning has ______.
[ ]
A.brought living areas and places of entertainment close together
B.separated recreation facilities far from home
C.improved recreative possibilities in the neighbourhood
D.enabled people to reach the best standard of living
3.The word “recreation” in the passage probablymeans, ______.
[ ]
A.activities done for pleasure or enjoyment
B.doing something again in a creative way
C.doing something important after work
D.required activities done after work
4.According to the author, greenspaces should be designed ______.
[ ]
A.to reduce the number of recreative activities.
B.to attract more and more people
C.for people to use more conveniently
D.for people to do recreative activities at the street door of the house
5.The main idea of this passage is that ________.
[ ]
A.attention must be paid to the improvement of recreation
B.greenspace facilities should be used better to improve the quality of life
C.the city environment is providing more recreative activities
D.we should try our best to raise our living standard

In America, drivers' education is part of the regular high school curriculum. Every student in his or her second year of high school is required to take a class in driver's education. However, unlike other courses, it is not given during the regular school year. Instead it is a summer course.
The course is divided up into two parts: class time for learning laws and regulations and driving time to practice driving. Class time is not unlike any other class. The students have a text from which they study the basic laws they must know to pass the written driving test that is given to anyone wanting to get a driver's license.
Driving time is a chance for the students to get behind the wheel (steering wheel) and practice starting, steering, backing up, parking, switching lanes, turning comers, and all the other maneuvers (操作) required to drive a car. Each student is required to drive a total of six hours. The students are divided up into groups of four. The students and the instructor go out driving for two-hour blocks of time. Thus, each student gets half an hour driving time per outing. The instructor and“driver”sit in the front seats and the other three students sit in the back.
Drivers Ed cars are unlike other cars in which they have two sets of brakes, one on the driver's side and one on the other side where the instructor sits. Thus, if the student driver should run into difficulties the instructor can take over. The car also has another special feature. On the top of the car is a sign that reads: STUDENT DRIVER. That lets nearby drivers know that they should use extra caution (小心) because the student driver is a beginning driver, not very experienced and prone to driving slowly.
After the student has passed the driver's education course and reached the appropriate age to drive (this age differs in every state but in most cases the person must be 16 years old), they can go to a designated state office to take their driver's test, which is made up of an eye examination, a written test, and a road test. The person must pass all three tests in order to be given a driver's license. If the person did well in his or her driver's education class, he or she will pass the test with flying colors and get a driver's license.
1.In America, the driver's course mentioned above ______.

[ ]
A.go out driving for twelve times
B.spend at least six hours driving
C.drive for two-hour blocks of time
D.get half an hour driving
4.Which of the following does not agree with the requirements for the students wanting to get their driver's license?
[ ]
A.They must be 16 years of age.
B.They should go to have their driver's test.
C.They must have their eyes examined.
D.They ought to do well in their driver's course.
5.In the last sentence “with flying colors” means ______.
