Last fall, I enrolled myself and my 2-year-old son in a class called“Parenting In Modem Times. ”While my time alone with him was wonderful—singing silly songs, squeezing into boxes not meant for adult-sized humans and playing other funny games —it was later, when the mothers separated from the children for our weekly discussion group, that one of the real challenges of modem-day parenting appeared.
On one particular Monday morning, we shared our parenting joys and worries. What these smart, loving, devoted mothers shared one by one, some tearfully, was a need to catch a precious thing lost: time to themselves.
Not days of it, mind you. Just an hour here or there to take a leisurely walk or a warm bath. To work out at the health club. To read a ravel. To write letters to old friends. Over and over the message was the same; It used to be so easy; why does it seem impossible now? Ah, time. Remember when, as a kid, you complained about having too much of it with nothing to do.
It's hardly news that our lives are more complicated today than ever. We play so many more roles: wife, parents, child to our own aging parents, professional, volunteer, friend, housekeeper—and that's often all in one. No wonder we sometimes feel stressed out.
“This is the first time in my life where I feel overwhelmed(不知所措), ”says Dana, a 34-year-old mother of two children aged 6 and 3, who works as a part-time saleswoman. “ I don't feel like I'm in control any more of all these parts of me. ”
She's not alone. “Multiple roles”was highest among woman aged 30 to 39, a time when many women are combining child raising and jobs for the first time.
For lots of women who choose to have families; this is when those babies are born. Marry are trying to stay on the job or simple need the income, which means little time away from work.

It's time to do something for your father—the man who for many people has been an encouragement and support since birth.
The third Sunday of June is Father's Day. The holiday honors not only fathers, but also all men who act as father figures, such as stepfather, uncles and grandfathers.
The idea of Father's Day came from the love and appreciation of an American lady called Sonora Smart Dodd in 1909.
Dodd wanted a special day to honor her father, William Smart. He raised six children by himself on a countryside farm in Washington State after his wife died during the birth of their sixth child.
When Dodd became an adult, she realized the selflessness her father had shown in raising his children as a single parent.
It was her father who made all the parental sacrifices(牺牲) and was, in the eyes of his daughter, a courageous, selfless and loving man.
Dodd's father was born in June, so she chose to hold the first Father's Day celebration in Washington on June 19, 1910.
In 1924, US President Calvin Coolidge supported the idea of a national Father's Day. Finally, in 1966, President Lyndon Johnson declared the third Sunday of June as Father's Day.
So this is a perfect chance to let your father know what he means to you. To show your love and respect, you need not buy an expensive gift. Computer users are being warned by industry experts to pay attention to secret codes which could be used to record their conversations.
E-mail, screensavers, and electronic greeting cards can carry a secret code which is able to turn on the computer's micro-phone, make a recording, and forward it to someone else without the user's knowledge.
In fact any attachments(附件) sent to a computer, whether it is a game of Space Invaders, or a moving picture, can possibly be used to spy.
Experts say people should always think twice about opening attachments because—although rat common—bugging(窃听) by computer can, and has been done.
Bill Lyons, head of the Internet Security Company Finjian, said, “People in the army have tested this and you can be sure, if people in general are aware of(知道) it, then computer hackers are aware of it. The frightening thing is that there are tools on the Internet which people, using a simple search method, can find, and which will enable them to attach this dangerous code to simple attachments. ”

Scientists have learned a lot about the kinds of food people need. They say that there are several kinds of food that people should eat every day. They are green and yellow vegetables of all kinds; citrus(柑橘) fruit and tomatoes; potatoes and other fruits and vegetables; meat of all kinds, fish and eggs; milk and food made from milk; bread or cereal, rice is also in this kind of food; butter or something like butter.
People in different countries and different places of the world eat different kinds of things. Foods are cooked and eaten in many different kinds of ways. People in different countries eat at different times of the day. In some places people eat once or twice a day; in other countries people eat three or four times a day. The important thing is what you eat every day.

Have you ever suddenly felt that someone you knew was in trouble—and he was? Have you ever dreamed something that came true later? Maybe you have ESP(超感官知觉).
ESP stands for Extrasensory Perception. It may be called a sixth sense. It seems to let people know about events before they happen, or events that are happening some distance away.
Here is an example. A woman was ironing clothes. Suddenly she screamed, “My father is dead! I saw him sitting in the chair! ”Just then, a telephone came. The woman's father had died of a heart attack. He had died sitting in a chair.
There are thousands of stories like this on record. Scientists are studying them to find out what's behind these strange mental messages. Here's another example—one of hundreds of dreams that have come true:
A man was dreaming he was walking along a road when a horse and a carriage came by. The driver said, “There is room for one more. ”The man felt the driver was dead, so he ran away. The next day, the man was sitting on a crowded bus. The bus driver said, “There's room for one more. ”Then the man saw the driver's face was the same face he had seen in the dream. He wouldn't get on the bus. As the bus drove off, it crushed and burst into flames. Everyone was killed.
Some people say stories like these are lies of coincidences. Others, including some scientists, say that ESP is real. From studies of ESP, we may someday learn more about the human mind.

The writers of murder stories go to a great deal of trouble to keep us guessing right up to the end. In actual fact, people often behave more strangely in real life than they do in stories.
The following advertisement once appeared in a newspaper: “An opportunity to earn £250 in a few minutes. A man…willing to take chances wanted for an out-of-the-ordinary job which can be performed only once.”A reader found this offer very generous and applied to the advertiser, but being a bit doubtful, he gave a false name. Soon afterwards, he received a reply. Enclosed in the envelope was a typed note instructing him to ring a certain number if he was still interested. He did so and learnt on the telephone that the advertiser wanted him “to get rid of somebody” and would discuss it more fully with him next day. But the man told the police and from then on acted under their instructions.
The police saw the two men meet and watched them as they drove away together. In the car the advertiser came to the point at once: he told the man he wanted him to shoot his wife. The reason he gave was that he was suffering from a disease and wanted to live in a warmer country, but his wife didn't agree to this. Giving the man some money, the advertiser told him to buy a gun and warned him to be careful of the dog which, though it would not bite, might attract attention. He also gave him a photograph of his wife so that he would be able to recognize her. After that, the advertiser suggested that the man should “do the job” next morning. Meanwhile, he would prepare his wife by telling her that a young man was going to call. After the murder, they would meet again outside a railway station and the money would be paid as arranged. The second meeting never took place, for the advertiser was arrested shortly afterwards and charged with attempting to persuade someone to murder his wife.

A famous actor often had to travel by train. Of course, a lot of his fellow-passengers used to recognize him on his journeys, and some of them tried to get into conversation with him, but he was usually feeling tired after acting until late the night before, so he did not encourage them to talk to him.

Some research has shown that perhaps eighty percent of illnesses have connections with food, and so has forty percent of cancer (癌). Different cultures (文化) may cause certain different illnesses because of different food.
That food has connections with illness is not a new discovery. More than 35 years ago, researchers realized that nitrates and additives (色素和添加剂) in food caused cancer. Yet, these things remain in our food. The additives which we eat are not all so direct. Farmers often give penicillin (青霉素) to living animals, and because of this, penicillin has been found in the milk of treated cows. Sometimes certain kinds of medicine are given to animals not for medical use, but for the making of more money. The farmers are simply trying to fatten the animals in order to get a higher price on the market. Although the government has tried repeatedly to prevent this from happening, the practice continues.

When you're negotiating (商谈) with someone, listen for the messages that he or she might be sending to you. For example, the word “difficult” does not mean the same as impossible. Imagine you're staying in a hotel, and you want to change your room. The manager's answer of, “That would be very difficult, sir”, does not mean that he is saying “no”. It just means that he wants to know what you are prepared to offer him in return for the change of room.
If you are buying a new car, and want to pay less than the price being asked, then the salesman's remark, “I'm sorry, but we never negotiate on the price” means that they do negotiate on other things, like the delivery time, or the “extras” that might be required as part of the deal. In the same car showroom, if the salesman says, “Sorry, I can't negotiate prices”, then your response should be to ask who can. The message the salesman is sending suggests that his boss is the one you need to be talking to.
In all of these situations, the message is never communicated in clear terms. In any negotiation, the two “players” wish to get as much out of it as they can, of course. In the three examples above, the salesmen and the hotel manager are hoping that you will accept their price or conditions but their “messages” make it clear that there may be room for movement and agreement. In a successful negotiation, the two sides move towards each other and reach an agreement on conditions that satisfy both sides.
1.According to the first paragraph, it is still quite possible to change your room if you ________.
[ ]
A.pretend to be very ill
B.negotiate with another manager
C.quarrel with the manager
D.give the manager an extra payment
2.When you hear the salesman say, “We never negotiate on the price”, you should ________.
[ ]
A.talk to the boss on the price
B.find out who can negotiate prices
C.turn to another salesman for further negotiation
D.try to talk about other possibilities
3.The word “room” in the last paragraph means ________.
[ ]
A.chance for free action or thought
B.part of a house or other buildings with walls around
C.freedom for people to do whatever they like
D.empty space in a place for people to move freely
4.The passage is mainly about ________.
[ ]
A.how to be a successful manager
B.how to get as much as possible out of a negotiation
C.how to save money in business
D.how to send messages in a negotiation
5.According to the passage, when you are told “Usually it is impossible”, you should try to ________.
[ ]
A.stop asking any more questions
B.try to see the boss and talk to him immediately
C.find out what exceptions there might be
D.let the speaker know who you are
