People living on parts of the south coast of England face a serious problem In 1993, the owners of a large hotel and of several houses discovered, to their fright, that their gardens had disappeared overnight. The sea had eaten into the soft limestone cliffs (石灰崖) on which they had been built, While experts were studying the problem, the hotel and several houses disappeared altogether, sliding down the cliff and into the sea.

Erosion (侵蚀) of the white cliff along the south coast of England has always been a problem but it has become more serious in recent years. Dozens of homes have had to be got rid of as the sea has crept farther and farther inland, Experts have studied the areas most affected and have drawn up a map for local people, forecasting the year in which their homes will be swallowed up by the hungry sea.

Angry owners have called on the Government to build sea defenses to protect their homes. Government surveyors have pointed out that in most cases, this is impossible. New sea walls would cost hundreds of millions of pounds and would merely make the waves and currents go further along the coast, changing the problem from one area to another. The danger is likely to continue, they say, until the waves reach an inland area of hard rock which will not be eaten as limestone is. Meanwhile, if you want to buy a cheap house with an uncertain future, apply to a house agent in one of the threatened areas on the south coast of England. You can get a house for a knockdown price but it may turn out to be a knockdown home.

1.What is the cause of the problem that people living on parts of south coast of England face?

[ ]

A.The disappearance of hotels, houses and gardens.

B.The experts have little knowledge of erosion.

C.The rising of the sea level.

D.The washing-away of limestone cliffs.

2.The erosion of the white cliffs in the south of England ________.

[ ]

A.will soon become a problem for people living in central England

B.has now become a threat to the local residents

C.is quickly changing the map of England

D.can be stopped if proper measures are taken

3.The experts' study on the problem of erosion can ________.

[ ]

A.lead to its eventual solution

B.provide an effective way to slow it down

C.help to prevent it from worsening

D.warn people whose homes are in danger

4.According to the author, when buying a house along the south coast of England, people should ________.

[ ]

A.be aware of the potential danger involved

B.guard against being cheated by the house agent

C.take the quality of the house into consideration

D.examine the house carefully before making a decision

This case came before me quite by chance in the spring of last year. I was traveling out to Rome for a consultation. I might have saved time and fatigue if I had gone by air, but it was early in the year and I had decided against it on account of the high winds and rain. Instead, I booked a sleeper in the first class wagon-lit, and left Paris on the mid-day train.

The journey was a normal one as far as Dijon, and a little way beyond. But. as the darkness fell and the line began to climb up into the Jura mountains the train went slower and slower with frequent stops for no apparent reason. It was that in difficult hour in a railway train, between tea and dinner, when one is tired of reading, reluctant to turn on the lights and face a long, dull evening, and conscious of no appetite at all to face another meal. It was raining a little; in the dusk the countryside seemed grey and depressing. The fact that the train was obviously becoming very slow did not relieve the situation.

Presently we stopped again, and this time for a quarter of an hour. Then we began to-move,. but in the reverse direction. We ran backwards down the line at a slow speed for perhaps a couple of miles, and drew into a-little station in the woods that we had passed through some time previously. Here we stopped again, this time for food.

1.The writer decided not to fly because________.

[ ]

A.it was spring

B.there were high winds and rain

C.it was early in the year

D.he preferred traveling by train

2.The train finally stopped________.

A.before Dijon

B.just after Dijon

C.a couple of miles from a little station

D.in the Jura mountains

If there is one thing I'm quite sure about, it is that in a hundred years from now we will still be reading newspaper. Not that newspapers are a necessity. Even now some people get most of the news from the television or have the radio switched on in the background or in the car. Many buy a paper on Saturday or Sunday. But for most people a newspaper has become a habit passed down from generation to generation. The basic British character won't change, and one of the characteristics of the British is that they don't much like talking to each other when they get up. So what better way is there to keep yourself think in the morning than to wrap yourself in a newspaper?

Over the past couple of centuries, human beings have developed a close relationship with the newspaper. It has become as natural as breathing or enjoying the sun. And it is not just the British who love newspaper. On Suburban trains in Calcutta, for instance, just one person in the whole car will buy a newspaper and read aloud the best bits to his fellow passengers, much to everyone's enjoyment.

The nature of what is news may change. What essentially(本质上) makes news is what affects our lives and the big political stories, the coverage of the wars, earthquakes and other disasters, will continue much the same. I think there will be more coverage of scientific research, though. It's already happening in areas that may directly affect our lives, like genetic engineering(基因工程). In the future I think there will be more coverage of scientific explanations of why we feel as we do-whether its love or depressions we develop a better understanding of how the brain operates and what our feelings really are.

It's quite possible that in the next century newspapers will be transmitted electronically from the national equivalents of Fleet Street and printed out in our own homes. In fact, I'm pretty sure that that is how it will happen in future. You'll be probably selecting from a menu, making up your own bespoken newspaper by picking out the things you want to read and say. You might even have an intelligent screening device to do the job for you.

I think people have got it wrong when they talk about the competition between the different media(媒体). They actually have a relationship, feeding off each other. It was once predicted that television would kill off newspapers, which hasn't happened. What is read on the printed page is more enduring than pictures on a flickering screen or sound lost in the sky. And as for the Internet, it's never really satisfying to read something just on the screen.

1.According to the passage the future of newspaper ________.

[ ]

A.will be mainly connected with scientific research

B.will report more important political activities

C.will directly cover more on science

D.will build a bridge between different people

2.The underlined part“bespoken newspaper”of the passage probably means ________.

[ ]

A.a newspaper which dares to report the truth

B.a newspaper edited to one's own interest

C.a newspaper edited and published for the public

D.a newspaper which only cover the life of family members

3.There are competitions between different media because ________.

[ ]

A.they have the same relationship

B.they report different things happening in the world

C.they do not trust each other

D.the business competition is becoming more and more severe

4.Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?

[ ]

A.It was centuries ago that newspapers came into being.

B.Televisions have taken the place of newspapers.

C.The Internet will gradually take the place of newspapers.

D.The British are active.

It is said that standardized testing harms children. The tests upset pupils and make them fear. If a pupil gets a low score he will be seriously damaged. Standardized testing is not agreeable to the regular educational orders designed to support the child.

There is, no doubt, anecdotal(轶事)evidence to support some of these views. However, common sense suggests that the majority of pupils are not harmed by testing, and as far as I know there is no real data that would not support common sense on this matter. The teachers I talk with seem much more often, to be concerned with pupils who don't care enough how well or how poorly they do on such tests, than with the relatively rare facts of pupils who care too much.

It is normal to be somewhat anxious when facing my real tests. But it is also necessary part of growing up to learn to deal with the tests that life certainly brings. Of the many challenges to a child's peace of mind, caused by such things as angry parents, bad dogs and shots from the doctor, standardized tests must surely be among the least fearsome. Unwise parental pressure can in some cases raise anxiety to harmful levels. A pupil who regularly get slow scores on tests of what that pupil has tried hard to learn is indeed likely to become discouraged. If this does happen, the school cannot declare to be offering a good educational program, and the teacher cannot declare to be doing a good job of teaching. Most low scores on tests, however, go to pupils who, for one reason or another, have not tried very hard to learn. In the opinion of the teachers of such pupils, it is the trying rather than the testing that is most in need of correction.

1.What is the main idea of the passage about the view that standardized tests harm children?

[ ]

A.The writer considers it be reasonable.

B.The writer thinks it unreasonable.

C.The writer finds some anecdotal evidence to support it.

D.It has been proved by some real data.

2.According to the writer, the reason for the most low scores on tests is that ________.

[ ]

A.the pupils do not study hard

B.The educational program is not good enough

C.The teachers are not doing a good job of teaching

D.The pupils don't care enough how well or how poorly they do on such tests

Researchers have announced the results of two studies on the health effects of the drug aspirin. One study shows aspirin can sharply reduce the chance that a healthy, older man will suffer from a heart attack.

The study offered two new results from earlier findings. It said taking one aspirin pill every other day helped only healthy men over the age of fifty. It also said aspirin gave the greatest protection against heart attacks to men with low blood cholesterol(胆固醇) levels.

Earlier studies showed that aspirin reduced the chance of heart attacks in men with heart disease. But there was no proof that aspirin would do the same for healthy men.

Researchers in the United States began a major aspirin study in the early 1980s. It included 22,000 healthy male doctors. All were between the age of forty and eighty-four. More than 11, 000 of the doctor; took one aspirin pill every other day. Each pill contained 32S milligram of aspirin. The other 11, 000 doctors took a harmless pill that contained no drug. The men did not know which kind of pill they were taking.

The doctors who took aspirin suffered 44 percent fewer heart attacks than those taking the harmless pill. 139 men who took aspirin suffered from heart attacks. Ten of them died. 239 men who did not take aspirin suffered from heart attacks. Twenty-six of them died.

The researchers said the doctors study provides clear proof that taking aspirin can prevent a first heart attack in healthy, older men. They said, however, the result do not mean every man over the age of fifty should take aspirin. They said aspirin cannot help men who do not eat healthy foods, who smoke cigarettes and who are fat. The researchers said men who think they would be helped by taking aspirin should talk with their doctors first.

1.The passage tells us that the new use of aspirin is ________.

[ ]

A.to treat heart disease

B.to reduce pain while one suffers from a heart attack

C.to help old people to be more healthy

D.to reduce the chance of a heart attack in old men

2.Aspirin can help those who ________.

[ ]

A.work as doctors

B.are under 40 years old

C.are fat and smoke cigarettes

D.are older and healthy

3.At last the researchers advise us to take aspirin ________.

[ ]

A.with care

B.as much as we like

C.every day

D.only considering the age

4.From the experiment we can conclude that about ________ of people who suffered from heart attacks without aspirin died.

[ ]

A.7%
B.11%

A higher reading rate, with no loss of comprehension, will help you in other subjects as well as in English, and the general principles apply to any language. Naturally, you will not read every book at the same speed. You would expect to read a newspaper, for example, much more rapidly than a physics or economics textbook-but you can raise your average reading speed over the whole range of materials you wish to cover so that the percentage gained will be the same whatever kind of reading you are concerned with.

The reading passages which follow are all of an average level of difficulty for your stage of instruction. They are all about five hundred words long. They are about topics of general interest which do not require a great deal of specialized knowledge. Thus they fall between the kind of reading you might find in your textbooks and the much less demanding kind you will find in a newspaper or light novel. If you read this kind of English, with understanding at four hundred words per minute, you might skim(浏览) through a newspaper at perhaps 650 ~ 700, while with a difficult textbook you might drop to two hundred or two hundred and fifty.

Perhaps you would like to know what reading speeds are common among native English-speaking university students and how those speeds can be improved. Tests in Minnesota, U. S.A. for example, have shown that students without special training can read English of average difficulty, for example, Tolstoy's War and Peace in translation, at speeds of between 240 and 250 words per minute with about seventy percent comprehension. Students in Minnesota claim that after twelve half-hour lessons, once a week, the reading speed can be increased, with no loss of comprehension, to around five hundred words per minute.

1.According to the passage, the purpose of effective reading with higher speed is most likely to help you ________.

[ ]

A.only in your reading of a physics textbook

B.improve your understanding of an economics textbook

C.not only in your language study but also in other subjects

D.choose the suitable materials to read

2.Which of the following does not describe the types of reading materials mentioned in the second paragraph?

[ ]

A.Those beyond one's reading comprehension

B.Those concerned with common knowledge

C.Those without much demand for specialized knowledge

D.Those with the length of about five hundred words

3.The average speed of untrained native speakers in the University of Minnesota is ________.

[ ]

A.about 300 words per minute

B.about 245 words per minute

C.about 650~770 words per minute

D.about 500 words per minute

4.According to the passage, how fast can you expect to read after you have attended twelve half- hour lessons in the University of Minnesota?

[ ]

A.You can increase your reading speed by three times

B.No real increase in reading speed can be achieved

C.You can increase your reading speed by four times

D.You can double your reading speed
