As you know different countries have different customs. Also there are many gestures showing many meanings in many countries. Here are a few examples of gestures. A fisherman in Britain will show the size of a fish he has caught by holding his two hands, palms(手掌) facing each other, the right distance apart in front of him. But the one from certain parts of Africa will measure off the size along his left arm with his right hand. In Britain the gesture to show the number “ONE” is male by holding up the index finger(the second finger), but in Switzerland it is the thumb-the first finger which is held up. Some people point at objects with finger, others by sticking out the lips. The gesture for “come here” is made in Britain with the index finger, which is held, pointing upwards, at eye level and bent towards the body; in Egypt the hand is held at arm's length, palm downwards, and the fingers are then bent. The difference between the movements is very important, and the meaning of the same gestures maybe opposite in different countries. It may bring trouble to those who don't know it.

Shyness is the cause of much unhappiness for a great many people. Shy people are anxious and self-conscious; that is, they are concerned with their own appearance and actions. Worrisome thoughts are constantly occurring in their minds: what kind of impression am I making? Do they like me? Do I sound stupid? Am I wearing unattractive clothes?

It is obvious that such uncomfortable feelings must affect people unfavorably. A person's self-concept is reflected in the way he or she behaves, and the way a person behaves affects other people's reactions. In general, the way people think about themselves has a deep effect on all areas of their lives.

Shy people have low self-esteem(respect), and are likely to be passive and easily influenced by others. They need reassurance that they are doing “the right thing”. Shy people are very sensitive to criticism. It makes them feel inferior(自卑). They also find it difficult to be pleased by praises because they believe they are unworthy of praise. A shy person may respond to a praise with a statement like this one:“You're just saying that to make me feel good. I know it's not true.” It is clear that, while self-awareness is a healthy quality, overdoing it is harmful.

Can shyness be completely got rid of, or at least reduced? Fortunately, people can overcome shyness with determination. It is important for people to accept their weakness as well as their strength. And it is not fair for them to label themselves inferior because they have to be realistic. Living on the impossible leads to a sense ot inferiority.

Each one of us has his or her own characteristics. We are interested in our own personal ways. The better we understand ourselves, the easier it becomes to live up to our chances for a rich and fulfilling life.

1.The first paragraph is mainly about ________.

[ ]

A.the thoughts of shy people

B.the cause of shyness

C.the effect of shyness on people

D.the questions in the minds of shy people

2.According to the writer, self-awareness is ________.

[ ]

A.harmful to people

B.a weak point of shy people

C.the cause of unhappiness

D.a good characteristic

3.What is the shy people's reaction to praise?

[ ]

A.They are pleased with it.

B.They feel it is not true.

C.They are very sensitive to it.

D.They feel they are worthy of it.

4.We can learn from the text that shyness can ________.

[ ]

A.help us to live up to our full development

B.enable us to understand ourselves better

C.block our chances for a successful life

D.have nothing to do with lack of self-esteem

Museums have changed. They are no longer places that one “should” go but to enjoy.

At a science museum in Canada, you can feel your hair stand on end as harmless electricity passes through your body. At the Children's Museum in New York, you can play an African drum. There are no “Do Not Touch” sign in some other museums in the USA.

More and more museum directors have realized that people learn best when they can become part of what they are seeing. In many science museums, the visitors are encouraged to touch, listen, operate and experiment so as to discover scientific rules for themselves.

The purpose is not only to provide fun, but also help people feel at home in the world of science. If people don't understand science, they will be afraid of it; and if they are afraid of science, they will not make the best use of it.

One cause of all these changes is the increase in wealth and spare time. Another cause is the growing number of young people in the population. Many of them are college graduates. They see things in a new and different way. They want art that they can take part in. The same is true of science and history.

The old museums have been changing and the government is encouraging the building of new, modern museums. In the States and Canada, there are more than 6000 museums, almost twice as many as there were 25 years ago.

1.The directors of the museums have realized ________.

[ ]

A.the importance of scientific rules

B.people learn best when they look at something

C.visitors prefer to learn from museums

D.people are interested if they take part

2.Why has the growing population of young people caused the changes in museums?

[ ]

A.Because there are more young people.

B.Because they are stronger.

C.Because they have less spare time.

D.Because they are better educated.

3.Twenty-five years ago there were about ________ museums in the United States and Canada.

[ ]

A.3500
B.2000
C.3000
D.6000

4.Which of the following is not shown in Paragraph Two?

[ ]

A.People should go to a museum to learn something.

B.People are encouraged to take part in what they are seeing.

C.People are enjoying themselves fully in modern museums.

D.People will understand science better by trying to discover the scientific rules themselves.

It was at least two months before Christmas when nine-year-old A1mie Rose told her father and me that she wanted a new bicycle. As Christmas draw nearer, her desire for a bicycle seemed to fade, or so we thought. We bought the latest rages, Baby Sitter's Club dolls, and a doll house. Then, much to our surprise, on December 23rd, she said that she “really wanted a bike more than anything else”.

It was just too late, what with all the details of preparing Christmas dinner and buying last-minute gifts, to take the time to select the “right bike” for our little girl. So here we were-Christmas Eve around 9:00 p.m., with Almie and her six-year-old brother, Dylan, nested snug in their beds. Now we could only think of the bicycle and the disappointment of our child.“What if I make a little bicycle out of clay(soil) and write a note that she could trade the clay model in for a real bike?” her dad asked. “This is an expensive item and she is 'such a big girl', it would be much better for her to pick it out.” So he spent the next four hours painstakingly working with clay to make a tiny bike.

On Christmas morning, we were excited for Almie to open the little heart-shaped package with the beautiful red and white clay bike and the note. Finally, she opened it and read the note aloud. “Does this mean that I trade in this bike that Daddy made me for a real one?” Beaming, I said, “Yes.” Almie had tears in her eyes when she replied, “I could never trade in this beautiful bicycle that Daddy made me. I'd rather keep this than get a real bike.” At that moment, we would have moved heaven and earth to buy her every bicycle on the planet!

Don't try telling Mark Bouch that dogs are man's best friends. His pet Keilar helped land him in prison.

She dropped his package of amphetamine(安非他明) at the feet of police as they began a search of his house.

Bouch, 26, was confident that the two officers would not find the package after he hid it in the bathroom.

But he failed to make allowances for dogs' natural instincts and now he is starting a nine-month prison sentence.

Michelle Lockhart, 20, Mark's girlfriend at the time, said yesterday:“I put the dogs into the bathroom to get them out of the way. The next thing I knew, Keilar had a package in her mouth. Mark had hidden it in the bathroom and it was just on the floor in there.”

“I couldn't believe it when the dog came out and put it right in front of the policemen.” “It was just following its instinct to pick things up. The police looked as surprised as I was and Keilar just looked really pleased with herself. She really gave the game away. I haven't spoken to Mark since it happened.”

The police had arrived at the couple's home in Wigton, Cumbria, after a warning. They were puzzled to see one of their suspect's pets run out from behind a chair with a package in her jaws.

It is believed Keilar had found the drugs in the bathroom before moving quickly down behind the furniture and then presenting the officers with her find. Detective Constable(警官) James Little, who was in charge of the case, said:“Somebody had a bag of amphetamine and when the police arrived, it disappeared, rather rapidly. The dog, following its natural instinct, went and picked it up in its mouth and brought it back.”

Bouch, who has 82 previous convictions(被判有罪的) mostly for dishonesty, had denied(否认) possessing amphetamine with intent to supply but was convicted at Carlisle Crown Court.

His pets are being cared for by relatives while he is in prison.

Lockhart has been sentenced to 240 hours' community service for the same charge.

The judge said she escaped because of her immaturity(未成熟) and lack of previous convictions.

When the wind blows, many things move. Things and people are moved whichever. way the wind blows. They may go over water, on the water, over land, or on land. History is filled with stories of people who used wind and air for fun and travel. One story that goes back about 3 000 years tells of two Greek men who escaped from prison by using wings made of feathers and wax(蜡) The story says the wax wings melted when one man flew too near the sun. His feathers fell off and he crashed into the sea. If those Greeks had used hang-glider or self-soaring wings for their prison escape, there wouldn't have been any wax for the sun to melt. Of course no one believes they got near the sun anyway.

For self-soaring or hang-gliding there should be wind, and plenty of it. A wind of 20 miles per hour or more is good for flying. Before flying, a rider sets up his hang-glider at the top of a hill. The hang-glider must be unfolded and set up facing into the wind. If the front or point isn't facing the wind, the hang-glider may go flying without the rider.

Hang-gliders are made of tightly woven cloth, lightweight metal rods(杆), and strong wires. The cloth is so tightly woven that it's almost airtight. The rods and wires should be made of very strong material. If something should break during a flight-well remember the Greeks.

People have always wanted to fly, and people have always wanted to add beauty to their lives. Beauty can come from colors, shapes, and forms. Self-soaring people add beauty to their hang-gliders with colors and decorations(装饰). Quite often a person may have a hang-glider specially made by a professional hang-glider builder. The hang-glider builder can let the buyer pick the cloth for color and decoration. But when it comes to the shape, the professional builder doesn't let the buyer have much to say. A hang-glider has to be built to fly. That's why the shape is important. People who build their own hang-gliders can decorate them any way they like, but if the shape isn't right, they wouldn't do much flying.

After being strapped(绑扎) in, a hang-glider is ready to go. The flight starts with a downhill run into the wind. The wind catches the hang-glider and gives the rider the lift needed to fly. For the first part of the ride, the rider tries for speed and altitude(高度). Without these, a flight may be over before it even starts. As soon as the hang-glider gains speed and altitude, a flier can start to control the direction of flight. For a right turn, the rider leans to the right and moves the steering bar(操纵杆) to the left. This tips the hang-glider to the right and it makes a turn. For a left turn, the rider leans left.

1.Who decides on the shape of a hang-glider?

[ ]

A.The buyer.

B.The hang-glider builder.

C.The government

D.The rider.

2.The fact that history is filled with stories of how people used air for travel shows that people ________.

[ ]

A.have never wanted to fly until the 20th century

B.have never even thought about flying until recently

C.have always been interested in flying

D.thought flying was only a funny story

3.When the hang-glider begins traveling high enough and fast enough, the hang-glider flier should ________.

[ ]

A.end the flight right away

B.pay more attention to the shape of the hang-glider than the color and decoration

C.fly higher not to fall into the sea

D.control the direction of the flight

4.The underlined word “self-soaring” in the second paragraph means ________.

[ ]

A.a way of flying without power

B.something out of the ordinary

C.moving the bar

D.running downhill into the wind
