The first telegraph cable (电缆) was laid under the sea between England and France in 1850. Cables are very much thicker and heavier than telegraph wires. There are a number of reasons for this. One reason is that the salt water of the sea harms ordinary telegraph wires, and so they have to be protected. Another is that, because electricity passes easily through water, wires have to be covered to prevent electric signals which are passing through them from escaping and getting lost in the sea. A third reason is that cables have to be very strong or they will break while they are being laid on the bottom of the sea from a ship sailing on the surface.

And so back to our question: What's dictionary for, and how, in 1962, can it best do what it ought to do? The demands are simple. The common reader turns to a dictionary for information about the spelling, pronunciation, meaning, and right use of words. He wants to know what is current (现行的) and correct. But he wants—and has a right to—the truth, the full truth. And the full truth about any language, and especially American English today, is that there are many areas in which certainly is impossible and the implication is misleading.

So with pronunciation. A citizen listening to his radio might notice that James B. Conant, Bernard Barnch, and D Wight D. Eisenhower pronounce economics as Eckuhnomiks, while A. Everybody knows that words can carry messages. People communicate (交流) with words. Books, magazines, TV and radio and films all help us to communicate with others. They all help us to know what is going on in the world and what other people are thinking about.
Do you think you can communicate without words? A smile on your face shows you are happy or friendly. Tears in your eyes tell others that you are sad. When you put up your hand in class, the teacher knows you want to say something or ask a question. You shake your head, and people know you are saying “No”, you nod and people know you are saying “Yes”.
Other things can also carry messages. For example, a sign at the bus stop helps you to know which bus to take. A sign on the wall of your school helps you to find the library. Signs on doors tell you to go in or out. Have you ever noticed that there are a lot of signs around you and that you receive messages from them all the time? People can communicate in many ways without words. For example, an artist can use his drawings to tell about beautiful mountains, about the sea and many other things.

In the near future some parts of the world may soon have a new kind of television. It is called high definition television or H-D-T-V. The main difference between H-D-T-V and normal television is the picture. It is more clear and detailed (明细). This is because H-D-T-V has many more points and lines that make a television image (图像). Every colour television picture contains thousands of red, green and blue points, They all come together as an image in the eye of the person
watching. The points are organized in lines that go across the television screen. There are more than 500 lines in a normal television. H-D-T-V has two times as many. To get this clear picture, you must have a big screen. Experts say people using a small screen will see little difference.
H-D-T-V also has clear sound. It is like the sound on a compact disc player (激光电唱机), or CD. All these improvements make H-D-T-V very costly. One kind in Japan now sells for more than 20 000 dollars. In the future, the cost is expected to be about 2 000 dollars. A major problem with H-D-T-V is its broadcast signal. The signal is bigger than for normal, because it carries more electronic in formation.
1.The main difference between an H-D-T-V and a normal television is ________.
[ ]
A.that the picture of normal TV is normal
B.that H-D-T-V is new and good
C.that H-D-T-V is so new that not all parts of the world have got it at present
D.that the picture of an H-D-T-V is more clear and detailed
2.A colour TV image is ________.
[ ]
A.made up of thousands of red, green and blue points
B.formed by the above-mentioned red, green and blue points which are organized in lines that go across the TV screen
C.a black-and-white picture
D.both A and B
3.An H-D-T-V has ________ lines.
[ ]
4.If you want to get a clear and detailed picture from an H-D-T-V, you ________.
[ ]
A.must have the bigger signal for H-D-T-V
B.have to get a big screen
C.should have a compact disc player
D.both A and B
5.According to the passage, which of the following is right?
[ ]
A.The H-D-T-V sets are not popular now because they are too expensive for most people.
B.The signal for an H-D-T-V is not bigger than that for the normal TV.
C.In the future an H-D-T-V will cost 10 times as much as it costs now.
D.In the future an H-D-T-V will be cheaper only because 2 000 dollars will be just equal to 20 000 dollars.

We may be very pleased with the rapid progress we have made in every field of study, but the way to test a student's knowledge and ability still remains as it was. We have almost done nothing to improve our examination system (制度).
It is well known that the examination system we are now using may be a good way of testing a student's memory, but it can tell you nothing about a student's ability. It does no good to students ability. It does no good to students and teachers.
As soon as a child begins school, he enters a world of examination that will decide his future or job.
In fact a good examination system should train a student to think himself, but it now does anything but that. So students are encouraged to remember what is taught. It doesn't enable them to gain more and more knowledge. The students who come out first in the examination often may not be the best in their studies.
Besides, the examinations often drive teachers to cram (填鸭式地教) all the time. They can't teach freely. They are forced to train students what to do with the coming examinations from time to time.
There must be some simpler and better way to test a student's true ability besides knowledge, and that is what we should do at once.
1.Now little has been done ________.
[ ]
A.to decide a student's job
B.to test a student's ability
C.to test what a student learns
D.to test a student's memory
2.According to the article, we know that examinations are very important to ________.
[ ]
3.The examination system we are now using can only make the students ________.
[ ]
A.remember what is taught
B.gain more and more knowledge
C.think by themselves
D.make rapid progress
4.In order to make students gain high marks in the coming examinations, teachers have to ________.
[ ]
A.develop their students' ability
B.teach freely
C.fill their students' mind with much information
D.teach their students how to study
5.This article tells us about the importance of ________.
[ ]
A.taking examinations
B.testing a student's knowledge
C.working hard
D.getting the examination system improved
