Radioactivity is dangerous. It may cause skin burns; it may destroy good tissues (组织) and it may cause illness that could be passed on to our children and grandchildren, In case of exposure (暴露) it may even cause death.

In the early days of radioactivity, scientists did not realize these dangers, Marie and Pierre Curie, after having worked for a while with radioactive materials, noticed that their fingers were reddened and swollen (红肿) and the skin was peeling off. Henry Becquered carried a small tube with radium in it in his waistcoat pocket, and was surprised to find a burn on his chest. Other early workers also reported burns and harm of different kinds.

I know science's limitations, but with my worship of science I always let the scientists do the groundwork, having complete confidence in them. I let them discover the physical universe for me-the physical universe that I de-sire so much to know. Then, after getting as much as possible of the scientist's knowledge, I remember that human beings are greater than the analytical scientist that the latter cannot tell us everything, not tell us about the most important things, the things that make for happiness.

It is instead intuitive thinking that alone can help us attain the truth and wisdom of living. Truly intuitive thinking is always the type of thinking that is sort of warm, emotional, and half-humorous, mixed in part with idealism and in part with delightful nonsense. Great wisdom consists in not demanding too much of human nature, and yet not altogether spoiling it by indulgence. One must try to do one's best and at the same time, one must, when rewarded by partial success or confronted with partial failure, say to oneself, “I have done my best. ” This is about all the philosophy of living that one needs.

After science has done its groundwork, religion, art, literature, and philosophy must take their rightful place in human life. These things do not seem to tie together with science in the modem world; the specialist has taken over the human being. For science can never replace art, religion, literature and philosophy. Next to knowledge, we must retain, and never lose, a taste for life, a respect for life, a sense of wonder at life, and a proper and reasonable attitude toward life. The taste for life must be simple, the respect for life must be truly profound, the sense of wonder must be fully alive, and the attitude toward life must be harmonious and reasonable .

B.science is closely related to the humanities.

C.harmony can be found among scientists.

[ ]

A.Science teaches us more about life than art, religion, literature and philosophy.

Milk was one of the main human foods long before history was written. It will probably remain one as long as there are animals that give milk.

The old word “milk” came from Sanskirt (梵文) , one of the oldest languages known to man. A very old picture of milking has been found. It was drawn five thousand years ago.

In the years long ago, people got their milk from their own animals. But in modem times new inventions made the milk industry a big business. In some faraway Turkish village of Kuskoy, whistling is as important as talking. In fact, whistling is talking because the villagers speak and sing by whistling. Kuskoy parents begin to teach their boys and girls the language of whistling about the time the children learn to talk. It is considered so important that the village school includes it as one of the subjects taught along with the Turkish language.

Around the world more and more people are taking part in dangerous sports and activities. Of course , there have always been people who have looked for adventure---- those who have climbed the highest mountains , travelled in unknown parts of the world or sailed in small boats across the greatest oceans . Now , however , there are people who hunt for an immediate excitement from a dangerous activity , which may only last a few minutes or even seconds .

I would consider bungee jumping to be a good example of such an activity . You jump from a high place (perhaps a bridge or a hot - air balloon) 200 metres above the ground with an elastic (弹性的) rope tied to your ankles. You fall at up to 150 kilometres an hour until the rope stops you from hitting the ground . It is said that 2 million people around the world have now tried bungee jumping . Other activities which most people would say are as risky as bungee jumping include jumping from tall buildings and diving into the sea from the top of high mountains .

Why do people take part in such activities as these ? Some scientists suggest that it is because life in modern societies has become safe and uninteresting . Not very long ago, people's lives were constantly in danger. They had to go out and hunt for food. If they were badly ill ,it was not easy for them to get well again , In fact , life was a continuous battle for living and existing.

Nowadays , according to many people , life offers little excitement . They live and work in safe conditions , they buy food in shops ,and there are doctors and hospitals to look after them if they become ill . The answer for some of these people is to look for danger in activities such as bungee jumping .

3.In bungee jumping , you ________.

[ ]

A.jump as high as you can

B.slide down a rope to the ground

C.tie yourself to a rope and fall to the ground

C.their lives are short of excitement

D.they no longer need to hunt for food.
