Body language is a very powerful tool of communication, not only between people but in the animal world as well.

In many instances, we produce idioms, which are all understandable by borrowing examples from animal communication.

For example, we know that a frightened cat will arch (拱起) its back high in a rigid curve (拱形). From this staring point we might hear the expression “He gets my back up” meaning “He makes me angry”.

In the same manner, we know that many animals, if challenged by attackers, will not turn and run away because this will encourage the attackers to attack them more forcefully. Instead, they will move backwards slowly to get out of harm's way, always still facing their attackers. We call this action “backing off” and it can be used just as well with humans as with animals.

In the case of humans, however, the back-off may not be physical but oral, as in using a kinder tone voice and gentler words instead of fighting against the attackers.

1.When a cat arches its back high in rigid curve, it shows that it is ________.

[ ]

A.angry
B.pleased
C.frightened
D.defeated

2.In order not to be attacked by its enemy, the animal will ________.

[ ]

A.move backwards slowly
B.turn and run away
C.face the attackers
D.Both A and C

3.In the article “back off” means “________”.

[ ]

A.to escape from the attackers
B.to get away quickly
C.to keep out the attackers
D.to avoid the attackers in words

4.Which of the following is wrong according to the article?

[ ]

A.To learn knowledge, humans must learn from animals.

B.Both humans and animals have body languages.

C.Both humans and animals have ways of getting out of harm.

D.“Face your attackers” means to encourage yourself.

5.What is mentioned in this article belongs to a study of English ________.

[ ]

A.grammar
B.idioms
C.expression
D.communication

The sea world is divided into three main oceans, the Pacific, the Atlantic and the Indian and two smaller oceans, the Arctic or the Northern Ocean, and the Antarctic or the Southern Ocean. The Pacific is by far the largest of these, for it covers half the sea- area of the world. In addition to the oceans there are other areas of sea, such as the Red Sea, the Mediterranean, the North Sea, the Caribbean Sea (加勒比海) and the Black Sea.

The continents are entirely surrounded by what is called the “continental shelf” which slopes (倾斜) gradually to a depth of about 500 feet. This shelf is built up of sediment (沉积物) which has been brought down to the sea by the continental river. Where the land near the coast is low and flat, the continental shelf may extend thirty, forty or even more miles from the coast; where mountain ranges run parallel (平行的) to the sea and near to it ( as on the east coast of Africa), the shelf is narrowed to only a mile or two.

From the edge of the shelf the sea- bed slopes sharply downwards so that the depth of water from the surface rapidly becomes greater, down to perhaps 1,200 feet.

1.Choose a correct diagram (示意图) from the following according to the information given:

[ ]

A.

B.

C.

D.

2.Which of those is the biggest?

[ ]

“Fire! Fire!” What terrible words to hear when one wakes up in a strange house in the middle of the night! It was a large, old, wooden house and my room was on the top floor. I jumped out of bed, opened the door and stepped out into the passage (走廊). It was full of thick smoke.

I began to run, but as I was still only half- awake, instead of going towards the stairs I went in the opposite (相反的) direction. The smoke grew thicker and I could see flames all around. The floor became hot under my bare feet. I found an open door and ran into a room to get to the window. But before I could reach it, one of my feet caught in something soft and I fell down. June 26

Last night when I was reading before the fire, a strange noise on the porch (走廊) outside announced (宣告) an unexpected visitor. When I looked up from the page, I came face to face with a bear looking in the window. It stood on its back legs, only a thin pane (框格玻璃) of glass between us. I grabbed the fire poker (拨火棒) and ran up into the loft (阁楼), pulling the ladder up behind me.

The bear must have been as frightened of me as I was of him because I heard him dash (hurry) off the porch. I waited a while, went quickly back down to put out the lamp, then back up again. I kept the ladder upstairs all night and slept badly, thinking the bear would be back any minute.

The Sphinx has the body of a lion and the face of a man. It was cut from limestone (石灰石) near Egypt's pyramids about 4,500 years ago. Not long ago a large piece of stone fell from the Sphinx's right shoulder.

The effects of age, wind, water and pollution have greatly weakened the Sphinx, for they have been eroding (侵蚀) the outside of the statue for centuries. The sun can make the wind blow! The faraway sun can make air move across the earth in a wind.

First, sunshine heats the earth. Then the earth heats the air that is close to it. As the air gets warmer, it also gets lighter. Up it goes, while cooler air moves in to take its place. This is the kind of motion (运动) you can see in a turning wheelas one part is going up, another part in moving along the ground.

High above the earth, the warm air grows cool, and down it comes again. Once more the earth warms it. Again it rises, and the great wheel of air keeps turning.

You can feel it turning in a hot day at the seashore of beside a lake. The earth soaks(吸收)up more heat from the sun than the water does. This means that the air above the earth grows warm and light, while the air above the water stays cool. The warm, light air rises. Offshore, the cooler air begins to move. It flows in over the land to take the warm air's place. That is why you are likely to have a cool breeze at the shore on a sunshiny day.

Some winds are caused by the spinning (旋转) of the earth itself.

1.When the wind blows, it gets through the following steps except ________.

[ ]

A.the earth spins by itself

B.sunshine heats the earth

C.the earth heats the air that is close to it

D.warm air goes up and cool air moves in to take its place

2.Which of the following plays an important part in making the wind blow?

C.The warm air.
D.The cool air.

3.Which of the following pictures can explain the form of the wind?

[ ]

A.
