In the United States, 30 percent of the adult(成年人)population has a“weight problem”. To many people, the cause is clear: we eat too much. But scientific evidence(证据)does little to support this idea. Going back to the America of 1910, we find that people were thinner than today. Yet they ate more food. In those days, people worked harder physically, walled more, used machines much less, and didn’t watch TV.

Several modern studies, moreover, have shown that fatter people do not eat more on average(平均地) than thinner people. In fact, some investigations(调查), such as a 1979 study of 3545 London office workers, reports that fat people eat less than slimmer people.

Studies show that slim people are more active than fat people. A study by a research group at Standford University School of Medicine found the following interesting facts:

The more the men ran, the more fat they lost.

The more they ran, the more they ate.

Thus, those who ran the most ate the most, yet lost the greatest amount of body fat.

1.What kind of physical problem do many adult Americans have? ________.

[ ]

A.They are too thin

B.They work too hard

C.They are too fat

D.They lose too much body fat

2.According to the information given in the passage, among 500 Americans, how many have weight problem?

C.100
D.150

3.Which of the following words can take the place of the word slim in this passage?

[ ]

A.poor
B.thin
C.healthy
D.rich

4.Compared with(与……相比)the adult American population today, the Americans of 1910 ________.

[ ]

A.ate more food and had more physical activities

B.ate less food but had more activities

C.ate less and had less physical exercise

D.had more weight problems

5.What have modern medical and scientific researches reported to us?

[ ]

A.Fat people eat less food and are less active.

B.Fat people eat more food than slim people but are less active.

C.Fat people eat more food than slim people but are more active.

There are three main kinds of food. Sugar and starch are grouped together as carbohydrates(碳水化合物) , they are found in bread, potatoes and rice. These are mainly energy-giving foods which the muscles and other tissues use. Fats are also energy-giving foods but do not give it up as quickly as the sugars and starches as they have to be broken down in the liver(肝)and made into sugar before they can be burnt by the body. Proteins(蛋白质), the third class, are the main solid part in all living cells(细胞). They are found in milk, meat and fish, and are necessary to the body in building new cells. For this reason growing children need more proteins than adults. Children cannot get much of their energy form fat because it makes them unwell if they eat too much of it.

In addition to these foods the body needs small quantities of vitamins. Vitamin A and D are found in fat. If a child doesn’t receive enough vitamin D, his bones do not harden so that he begins to walk late and when he does so his bones bend(弯曲). Vitamin C is found in fresh fruit and vegetables. If people go short of vitamin C, they developed scurvy(坏血病). Normal people need very little of these vitamins which they get easily in an ordinary diet, so there is no need to take vitamin pills. Babies, however, get very little to eat so that they have to be given in orange juice to prevent scurvy.

Most British telephone cards are just plain green, but card collecting is becoming a popular hobby in Britain and collectors even have their own magazine International Telephone Cards. One reason for their interest is that cards from around the world come in a wide variety of different and often very attractive designs. When a consumer (消费者) finds that something he or she bought is faulty or in some other way does not live up to what the producer says for it, the first step is to present the warranty(保单), or any other records that might help, at the store of buying. In most cases, this action will produce results. However, if it does not, there are various means the consumer may use to gain satisfaction.

A simple and common method used by many consumers is to complain(投诉) directly to the store manager. In general, the“higher up”the consumer takes his or her complaint, the faster he or she can expect it to be settled. In such a case, it is usually in the consumer’s favour, taking it as true that he or she has a just right.

Consumers should complain in person whenever possible, but if they cannot get to the place of buying, it is acceptable to phone or write the complaint in a letter.

Complaining is usually most effective when it is done politely but firmly, and especially when the consumer can show clearly what is wrong. If this cannot be done, the consumer will succeed by presenting specific information as to what is wrong, rather than by making general statements. For example,“The left speaker does not work at all and the sound coming out of the right one is unclear”is better that“This stereo (立体音响) does not work.”

The store manager may advise the consumer to write to the producer, if so, the consumer should do this, stating the complaint as politely and firmly as possible. But if a polite complaint does not achieve the expected result, the consumer can go a step further. He or she can threaten(恐吓) to take the seller to the court or report the seller to a public organization responsible for protecting consumers’ right.

1.When a consumer finds what he bought has a fault in it, he should first ________.

[ ]

A.complain personally to the manager

B.show something provable in written form to the store

C.threaten to take the matter to court

D.write a firm letter of complaint to the store

2.If a consumer wants a quick settlement of his problem, it’s better to complain to ________.

[ ]

A.a shop assistant

B.the producer

C.a public organization

D.the store manager

3.The most effective complaint about what was bought can be made by ________.

[ ]

A.showing the fault of it to the producer

B.saying firmly it is of poor quality

C.asking politely to change it

D.explaining exactly what is wrong with it

4.The passage tells us ________.

[ ]

A.how to make the complaint have a good effect

B.how to settle a consumer’s complaint

C.how to avoid buying something wrong

D.how to deal with complaints from consumers??

A child’s birthday party doesn’t have to be a hassle; it can be a basket of fun, according to Beth Anaclerio, an Evaston mother of two, ages 4 and 18 months.

“Having a party at home usually requires a lot of running around on the part of the parents, and often the birthday boy or girl gets lost in wild excitement. Read the following interview with Dr. John Bass, an international shark (鲨鱼) specialist who has spent many years studying sharks:

First of all, doctor, are all sharks dangerous?

No, they aren’t. There are about 250 different kinds of sharks, but fewer than 30 of them are dangerous to humans. Certain sharks are very aggressive(好斗的) and we should fear them, but the danger of shark attacks is much lower than most people think.

  So which sharks are dangerous?

The Great White shark is the most dangerous. Then there is the Tiger shark, which other sharks are afraid of, and the Blue shark. Both of them are very fast and dangerous.

Which are the biggest and the smallest sharks?

The Whale shark is the biggest shark in the world. It grows up to 15m in length and weighs as much as six large cars. The smallest shark, which is found near Japan, could fit into the palm of your hand because it is only 15-20cm long.

  Do all sharks have teeth?

Yes, they do. Most sharks have hundreds, sometimes even thousands, of sharp teeth. These are arranged in rows of four or more. They fit quite loosely in the jaw. When the front ones break off or fall out, spare teeth move forwards from the rows behind. Sharks get a new set of teeth every two weeks. In 10 years, a Tiger may lose as many as 24,000 teeth!

That’s a lot of teeth! What kind of food do sharks eat?

Most sharks feed on small fish, and they keep the oceans healthy by eating sick and injured fish. However, hungry sharks will eat almost anything, including smaller sharks and even rubbish. Inside one Tiger which was found, there was a tin can, a bicycle tyre, a leather wallet and an alarm clock!

And how do sharks find their food, doctor?

A shark’s sense of smell is excellent. It will follow the smell of blood across thousands of meters of ocean. They also see well, and they have good hearing. Sharks can feel movement in water very easily too, and it is possible for them to feel a fish moving as far as 30m away.
