A businessman must keep records of the money he takes in and the money he spends. The work of keeping such records is called bookkeeping. The work of deciding how the records should be set up is called accounting. An accountant also finds out, by studying the records, whether or not a business is doing well. The accountant must know many things about the business.
Suppose a man owns a small clothing store, he keeps records that show that he spent money for newspaper advertising, and for suits, shirts, shoes, and neckties to sell to his customers. He had to pay a young man to help him in the store. He also paid rent and had other expenses.
At the end of the year, he must take an inventory. That is, he counts how many pieces of clothing he has on hand. Then he must find out exactly how marry he sold, how much money he took in, and how much money he spent in running the business. If he took in more than he spent, he made a profit for the year. If he spent more than he took in, he suffered a loss. He depends on his store accounting records to get all this information.
The owner of a small clothing store can keep records without much trouble. But a big oil company, or a big bank has many difficult accounting problems. The company must know how much money is to be paid by its debtors and how much it owes other companies for supplies. It must know how much it has lost in depreciation, or wear and tear of its equipment. All of this information must be kept in the company's accounts. Big companies employ many accountants.
After a company's accountants finish their yearly count, their work must be officially examined. Experts from outside company double-check the records to be sure the accounts are correct.

Unless governments take necessary measures to protect tigers, they may disappear by 2010, the World Wildlife Fund said Thursday.
The conservation(保护) group said tiger numbers have decreased(减少) 95 percent in the past century and only 5 000 - 7 200 tigers still remain in the wild-compared with nearly ten times that many at the start of the century.
WWF published an update Feb. 11, 1999 of their study-Wanted Alive: Tigers in the Wild, marking the end of the Chinese Year of the Tiger.
The report states that in spite of the great efforts over the past year, much remains to be done to prevent the tiger from becoming extinct early.
“Next century, if governments do not fight against unlawful hunting and get rid of demand for tiger products the tiger will go to extinction. ”says WWF.
“We cannot relax for one moment, if we are to make it certain that tigers will still exist in the wild by the next Chinese Year of the Tiger in 2010. ”Said Elizabeth Kemt, species conservation information manager at WWF International and one of the authors of the report.

A report by the American Association of University Women (AAUW )notes that girls are scarce(稀少) in computer classes and in high-paying technology jobs and the reason is that girls think computer classes or jobs are stupid and boring.
The AAUW found that girls think programming classes are populated by boys playing shooting games. The girls want no part of that.
Meanwhile, a separate study found that boys and girls spend about the same amount of time on the Internet. But while boys are playing games, girls are doing research and e-mailing friends.
Excuse me if I am being stupid here, but I don't see what's wrong with all this. The AAUW says that the computer culture must change so it can attract women. But to me, it seems that women are using computer very sensibly for communication and learning.
If the computer culture should change so that boys won't waste so much time playing games.
It was suggested in the report that girls need to be encouraged to learn the basics of the technology, to examine the cards and microprocessors, to take the computer apart and see how it works.
But if either of my kids decided to pull the workings out of our US $2000 machine, I would break their little fingers. I have had to make this point with my son several times. My daughter thinks it would be a stupid waste of time. why would you risk making this useful machine useless?
Girls, I think, understand well how to use a tool effectively, you don't have to put it together from various parts. That is as true for a computer as it is for a telephone.
Girls use computers to chat with friends, make covers for their school reports and to look up things. As they move the schools and into a field of study or work, their use of computers will unavoidably grow. Girls will learn how to make the machine do what they need it to do. Any other information about computer is a waste of brain space, and girls know that clearly.
I hate reports that try to make women such as me immediately think our daughters have suffered a lack of chances that must be made up for by some forced training.
The AAUW found no deep barriers(障碍) to women entering the technology fields. But the group has a problem with the fact that girls don't want to.
I thought our goal was to give girls a choice.

A.In order to learn the basics of computer technology, girls should take the computer apart and see how it works.
B.The computer culture should change so that boys will spend less time playing games.
C.Boys and girls spend about the same amount of time on the Internet.

Glynis Davis:
I first piled on the pounds when I was in the family way and I couldn't lose them after-wards. Then I joined a slimming club. My target was 140 pounds and I lost 30 pounds in six months. I felt great and people kept saying how good I looked. But Christmas carne and I started to slip back into my old eating habits. I told myself I'd lose the weight at slimming classes in the new year, but it didn't happen. Instead of losing the pounds, I put them on. I'd lost will power and tried to believe that the odd bags of fish and chips didn't make any difference but the scales don't lie.
Roz Juuna:
To be honest, I never weigh myself any more—I've learnt to be happy with myself. It seemed to me that I would feel sorry about every spoonful of tasty food that passed my lips. My idea is simple. You shouldn't be too much thinking about food and dieting. Instead, you should get on with life and stop dreaming of a super-thin body. This is obviously the size I meant to be and, most of all, I'm happy with it.
Lesley
I was very happy after winning Young Slimmer of the Year. I'd look in then mirror unable to believe this slim lady was me! That might have been my problem—perhaps from then on I didn't pay any attention to myself. Winning a national competition makes everything worse, though, because you feel the eyes of the world are fixed upon you. I feel a complete failure because I've put on weight again.
Ros Langford:
Before moving in with my husband Gavin, I'd always been about 110 pounds, but the pleasant housework went straight to my waist and I put on 15 pounds in a year. Every so often I try to go on a diet. I'm really good on a few days, then end up having the children's leftovers or eating happily chocolate—my weakness. I'd like to be slim, but right now my duty is the children and home. I might take more exercise when my kids are older.

Eddie was in the back of the shop counting the day's takings when the doorbell rang. It was just on closing time and shutters were already up in front. Normally there were few customers after five, and the half hour before he shut the shop was mainly devoted to getting orders ready for the morning and entering up the accounts. Of course it might be Maureen, who had lately developed a habit of coming into the shop just before closing time and so making sure that Eddie did not escape her for the evening.
With a sigh Eddie put down his pen and came out from the back and went behind the counter. As he did so, he was fuming over in his mind what possible excuse he could offer to Maureen for not spending the evening with her. If only Maureen would accept the excuse of a headache or pressure of work. But she would want to stay and fuss over him if he said a headache, and as for work, she was always bothering him to move into a district where there was more business than in Candlewick Street. “Why is it, ”thought Eddie, “that she can't leave me alone for one evening? Doesn't it ever occur to her that I'd like a bit of time to myself?”
There was a woman in the shop and a man standing with his back half turned towards the counter. The woman was not Maureen, he didn't recollect ever having seen her before, but there was something vaguely familiar about the way the man was standing. It reminded him of the bare white-washed walls of St. Matthews hospital and Sam Lewis standing with his back towards Eddie staring out of the window.

“It is over! Thank goodness!”
School was over and I was both mentally and physically tired. I sat at the very front of the bus because of my anxiety to get home. Sitting at the front makes you stand out like a shiny coin in a pile of dull pennies.
Janie, the driver, tries to break the uncomfortable atmosphere by striking the match of conversation. I try to mind my manners and politely listen, but usually I am too busy thinking about my day. On this day, however, her conversation was worth listening to. “My father's sick. ”she said to no one in particular. I could see the anxiety and fear in her eyes. It frightened me. I had never seen her like this before. She always greeted students with a smile.
With a sudden change of attitude and interest, I asked, “What's wrong with him?”
With her eyes wet and her voice tight from fighting the tears, she responded, “Heart trouble. ”Her eyes lowered as she continued. “I've already lost my mum, so I don't think I can stand losing him. ”
I couldn't respond. I was in shock. My heart ached for her.
I sat on the old, smelly seat thinking of the great pain my own mother was thrown into when her father died. I saw how hard it was, and still is, for her. I wouldn't want anyone to go through that.
Suddenly I realized Janie wasn't only a bus driver, that was just her job. She had a whole world of family and concerns too. I had never thought of her as anything but a driver.
I suddenly felt very selfish. I realized I had only thought of people as far as what their purposes were in my life. I had never thought of them as people with lives and events of their own. I paid no attention to Janie because she was a bus driver. I had judged her by her job and brushed her off as unimportant.
For all I know, I'm just another person in someone else's world, and may not even be important. I shouldn't have been so selfish and self-centered. Everyone has places to go, people to see and appointments to keep. Understanding people is an art.

In 1997, 16 189 Americans were killed by alcohol-related (和酒精有关) crashes, accounting for nearly half of all traffic deaths. That is another person killed every 32 minutes. But that is only the number of the dead. An additional 327 000 Americans were injured in crashes in which alcohol was involved—roughly one person every other minute.
The people killed and injured in these crashes came from every social, racial, and economic background. They were our friends, our schoolmates, our sons and daughters, our mother and fathers, aunts and uncles. They are children, teenagers, and adults. They were rat just numbers..

So this is the problem: drunk driving is the nation's most frequently committed violent crime.

Education stresses alcohol so much, people don't realize that even simple, over-the-counter decongestants(非处方药)can affect driving skills—not to mention illegal drugs.
The problem is, people are dying. And perhaps if they had known better, they wouldn't have gotten into that car, or had those last couple of drinks. Or they would have had a designated driver. People need to know before they can act. They need to know the dangers of driving under the influence.

What will TV producers think of next? Anything unusual to keep viewers watching, it seems. And what is the latest trend? Reality television.
Viewers of reality TV shows enjoy the programs because the conclusion is being decided as the story unfolds. None of the material is prepared beforehand! At least that is what the TV producers tell everyone.
In 2000, the Survivor reality show started. Sixteen competitors were sent on a tropical island, all hoping to win the US $ 1 million prize. Each week, the competitors voted someone out of the. The competitors had to cooperate to survive, but were also competing to be the last one on the island.
Later on, critics said the TV producers had already decided the winner beforehand. Did this possible trick tame the public's desire for more reality TV? Strangely enough, it didn't. New Survivor sequels(系列) were popular with audiences worldwide.
Other reality shows lave followed Survivor. The latest reality TV project is called Minimum Wage. Two average couples have to survive on minimum wage for one month. An identical show in Japan attracted great interest last year. The Japanese, currently suffering through a recession(经济萧条), apparently found much in this show to relate to.
