What comes into your mind when you think about robots Do you imagine armies of evil metal nonsters (魔鬼) planning to take over the world? Or, perhaps of mechanical men who have been created as guards or soldiers by mad genius (天才)? Or maybe you think of man like robots who act, think, and look like human beings. In fact robots like these have more to do with science fiction films than with real life. In the real world robots are machines that do jobs which otherwise have to be done by people. Robots either operate by themselves or under the control of a person.
In a car factory, for example, robot machinery can put together and paint car bodies. On the sea bed remote-controlled underwater machines with mechanical arms can perform tasks too difficult for divers. Robot spacecraft can explore the solar system and send back information about planets and stars.
Many robots have computer brains. Some robots are fitted with cameras, sensors, and microphones which enable them to see, to feel, and to hear. And some robots can even produce electronic speech.
All this does not mean that a robot cm think and behave like a human being, Present day robots have to be programmed with a good deal of information before they can carry out even simple tasks.
1.According to this article, which of the following is Not true about robts in real life?
[ ]
A.Some robots are as creative as artists.
B.Some robots can help make cars.
C.Some robots can see and hear.
D.Some robots can explore outer space.
2.Robots can perform many tasks for man because ________.

Medical experts have suspected for many years that there is a strong link between what a person eats and cancer. A team of Chinese and American scientists did the study. About thirty thousand people from
the ages of 40 to 69 took part in the study. They were from the Northern Central Chinese Area of Linxian. Most of them took vitamines and minerals every day for five years.
Linxian was chosen because the people there have an extremely high rate of cancer of stomach and esophagus(食道). Researchers believe that fungus and molds (真菌和霉菌) in local foods nay be partly responsible for the high cancer rate. Researchers divided those into eight groups. Seven of the groups received different mixtures of vitamines and minerals daily. The amounts of the vitamines and minerals were 1 to 2 times than what American health officials say is needed. The eighth group received sugar pills that had no effect. Those who seemed to gain the most received a mixture of a form of vitamine A called β-carotene (β-胡萝卜素), vitamine E and the mineral selenium. The vitamine and mineral are believed to prevent damage to cells (细胞) caused by cancer-causing substances (物质). Researchers reported a 13 percent drop in cancer rates in those who tookβ-carotene, vitamine E and selenium (硒). They also found a 10 percent drop in the number of deaths caused by strokes (中风) from bursting blood vessels(血管).
1.What do you think may cause cancer according to the passage?

[ ]
A.β-carotene and minerals
B.food with fungus and molds
C.vitamines and sugar pills
D.β-carotene, vitamine E and selenium
4.What is the main idea of the passage?

The family is changing in the United States as in many other countries in the world. About fifty years ago, in the traditional (传统的) family, the father was boss. Now in modern family, both the father and the mother are equal partners.
There are some great differences between the traditional family and the modem family. The first important difference is that the traditional husband was the head of the family, because he was usually the only one who worked outside the home. If the wife worked for pay, then the husband was not considered to be a good provider. In many families today, both husband and wife work for pay. Therefore, they share the role of head of the family. In addition, the traditional husband usually made the big decisions about spending money. However, the modern husband shares these decisions with his wife. Also, the traditional husband did not help his wife with the housework or meal preparation. Dinner was ready when he came home. But the modem husband helps his working wife at home. He may do some of the housework, and it is not unusual for him to cook.
The second difference is in the woman's role. In the traditional family, the woman might have worked for pay during her first years of marriage. However, after she became pregnant(怀孕), she would usually give up her job. Her work was to take care of her family and home. In many families today, the modern woman works outside the home even after she has children. She's doing two jobs instead of one, so she is busier than the traditional mother was.
The third difference is that the children were taken care of by the mother in the traditional family. The mother had to help them to get ready for school and to make their breakfast. However, today preschool children may go to a child care center or to a baby-sitter (保姆). And modem children are more independent. They have to get up early in the morning and get ready for school. Their mother is busy getting ready for work, so they may even have to make their own breakfast.
1.What information can we get from the first and the last paragraphs?
[ ]
A.The American family is always changing.
B.The American family changes in the same way as those in many other countries do.
C.The American men have to support their families alone.

[ ]
A.he worked inside and outside the home
B.his wife did not do any work inside and outside the home

3.Today in America, the husband ________.
[ ]
A.is no longer as lazy as before
B.always prepares dinner at home
C.never comes home until dinner is ready

Some of the world's most famous persons have suffered a similar disability, such as Albert Einstein, the scientist; Thomas Edison, the inventor; Auguste Rodin, the artist. What disabled these three highly - intelligent men? Strange as it may seem, they all suffered from learning disabilities, the name given to a number of related learning disorders.
Persons with learning disabilities are of normal or higher intelligence (聪明). Yet they have great difficulty leaning to read, write or use numbers.
Almost always, there is a problem with one of the mental processes needed to understand or use written signs or spoken language. A learning-disabled child sees and hears perfectly well. Yet he or she is unable to recognize difference in sizes, shapes or sounds that are easy for others to recognize.
Learning disabilities are very common. They affect perhaps 10 percent of all children. Four times as many boys as girls have learning disabilities.
Since about 1970, new research has helped brain scientists understand these problems better. Scientists now know there are many different kinds of learning disabilities and that they are caused by many different things. There is no longer any question that all learning disabilities result from difference in the way the brain is organized.
You can not look at a child and tell he or she has a learning disability. There is no outward sign of the disorder. So some researchers began looking at the brain itself to learn what might be wrong.
In one study, researchers examined the brain of a learning-disabled person who had died in an accident. They found two unusual things. One involved cells (细胞) in the left side of the brain, which control language. These cells normally are white. In the learning-disabled person, however, these cells were gray. The researchers also found that many of the nerve (神经) cells were not in a line the way they should have been. The nerve cells were mixed together.
1.How can we learn whether a person has suffered from learning disabilities or not?
[ ]
A.By judging whether he or she sees or hears perfectly well.

Sometime in the next century, the familiar earlymorning newspaper on the front porch will disappear. And instead of reading your newspaper, it will read to you. You'll get up and turn on the computer newspaper just like switching on the TV. An electronic voice will distribute stories about the latest events, guided by a program that selects the type of news you want. You'll even get to choose the kind of voice you want to hear. Want more information on the brief story? A simple touch makes the entire text appear. Save it in your own personal computer file if you like. These are among the predictions from communications experts working on the newspapers of the future. Pictured as part of broader homebased media and entertainment systems, computer newspapers would unite print and broadcast reporting, offering news and analysis with video images of news events.

But resistance to computer newspapers may be stronger from within journalism(新闻界). Since it is such a cultural change, it may be that the present generation of journalists and publishers will have to die off before the next generation realizes that the newspaper industry is no longer a newspaper industry. Technology is making the end of traditional newspapers unavoidable.

Believe it or not, America's favorite snack food is the potato chip. There is a story behind how it was first made. One might think that somewhere a genius thought up the first potato chips, but it didn't happen that way, Picture an elegant restaurant in Saratoga Springs, New York, in 1853. The Moon Lake Restaurant's menu included Frenchfried potatoes, a popular food recipe brought back from France by Thomas Jefferson. These were thickly cut potatoes, fried until golden brown and crisp on the outside. One evening a guest in the dining hall felt that his potatoes were too thick and sent them back to the kitchen, The cook sliced some potatoes thinner than before and prepared them for the complaining guest. He was still not satisfied and sent them back again! By this time the cook was angry and decided to do exactly what the dinner guest wanted: slice the potatoes as thin as possible. Then they would be so crisp that the diner wouldn't be able to use his fork to eat them. When the paperthin browned potatoes arrived, the diner was pleased. He was so happy with them that other guests started ordering the new potatoes. The cook's plan to stop the dinner guest from complaining did not turn out as he had planned.
