阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。

After the September 11 terrorist attacks, some highschools in America wanted the students?to pledge allegiance(宣誓效忠)to the flag.Is it necessary?or not?Let's seehow the kids think of this requirement.

  Lea Mouallem,Marymoumt High School

I believe that saying the Pledge of Allegiance is a way ofreminding our country that no matter what happens,we are united.I don't think our president wants us to go and join the army now,but he wants to tell us that we will be able to over come the disaster as a whole nation that is working together.

  Harry Chin,15,Culver City High School

I am not for the pledge of Allegiance,Allegiace and I am not a gainst the Pledge of Allegiance because I just say it so many times that it loses meaning.I say it every day at school In the second period. It doesn't mean anything any more.

  David Tran,15,Warren High School

The Pledge of Allegiance is another sign of country. We should have some respect to it.In many schools,we don't say the Pledge every morntng— we just stand up and let the Na- tional anthem ring through the silence. We said the Pledge of Allegiance on Sept 12.

  Danny Maryanor,16,Santa Monica High School

I wonder why we were suddenly asked to recite thePledge when many of us stopped after elementary school;andthe Pledge was recited before the play of“Ode to Joy”(欢乐颂)with recorders. This was not to express patriotism(爱国主义),or even to remernber those who lost their lives on Sept 11.

I feel I cannot support a nation that in this time of crisislooks outward for revenge(报复)instead of inward for peace.Perhaps we should think more about our problems.

Polly Jones lived on a farm. She had lived there all her life, all twelve years of it.Her father, who managed the farm, had just lifted the potato crop.Prices were high:he wanted to sell the crop as quickly as he could.

Polly wandered over the rough field looking for the smaller potatoes that the pickers had accidentally missed. She found one, then another, then a handful. She was pleased. They were delicious once cooked. Then she caught sight of something else.It looked like a piece of coloured stone.Polly picked it up and thought how pretty it was.She could see a pattern on it:a picture of a fish and a part of a leaf. She scraped(擦去)the soil away around her feet and found that she was standing on what seemed to be a piece of pavement(铺路石).Stuck to another piece of stone was something small and round like a button. She realized it was an old coin.

The field was busy the next morning though not with potato pickers. In front of the house where the farm machinery usually stood were several cars and a policeman.A group of distinguished-looking men and women had appeared the morning after her father's telephone call. The local television station had shown some pictures of the field with Polly pointing to the place where she had found her pavement. It was proving to be of Roman origin and was being described as the most exciting thing that had happened in the area since the end of the Second World War.In those days an American airbase had occupied the site of the potato field.

A week later about forty students arrived from the local university. That afternoon a truck with equipment arrived. The excavation(挖掘)was officially under way.Permission had been given and the“dig”,as it was called, was expected to last several months.Polly wondered how the everyday work of the farm would get done with so many strange people around and cars coming and going all day long. All the unusual activity had made the cows and sheep restless. Her father said their cows produced less milk.

Still,it was interesting and great fun. They had let her keep the gold coin.

From then on,Polly wouhl always walk carefully over potato fields.

B.

C.

Last summer I went through a training program and became a literacy volunteer(扫盲志愿者).The training I received, though excellent, did not tell me how it was to work with a real student, however. When I began to discover what other people's lives were like because they could not read,I realized the true importance of reading.

My first student Marie was a 44-year-old single mother of three. In the first lesson,I found out she walked two miles to the nearest supermarket twice a week because she didn't know which bus to take. When I told her I would get her a bus schedule(时刻表),she told me it would not help because she could not read it.She said she also had difficulty once she got to the supermarket because she couldn't always remember what she needed.Since she did not know words, she could not write out a shopping list. Also, she could only recognize items by sight,so if the product had a different label(标识),she would not recognize it as the product she wanted.

As we worked together, learning how to read built Marie's self-confidence(自信心),which encouraged her to continue in her studies. She began to make rapid progress and was even able to take the bus to the supermarket. After this successful trip, she reported how self-confident she felt.At the end of the program, she began helping her youngest son,Tony,a shy first grader, with his reading. She sat with him before he went to sleep and together they would read bedtime stories. When his eyes became wide with excitement as she read, pride was written all over her face, and she began to see how her own hard work in learning to read paid off.As she described this experience,I was proud of myself as well.I found that helping Marie to build her self-confidence was more rewarding than anything I had ever done before.

The tower of Big Ben,London's most famous building, has always leaned(倾斜)slightly, but construction work on a new line for the London Underground seemed likely to give the tower a real lean.Engineers have had to prop up(支撑)its base to prevent it from damaging the rest of the Houses of Parliament.

To control the tower's movement, engineers pumped grout(水泥浆)into tile soil under the tower. The tower now leans an extra few centimetres, but the lean can only be seen by the most sharp— eyed observer.

Between 1995 and 1997,to lengthen the Jubilee line of the Underground, builders dug a 40.— metre— deep hole just 31 metres north of the clock tower. And the new tube(underground)tunnels' were even nearer to the tower.John Burland, who recently helped stop the increasing lean in the Leaning Tower of Pisa and was an adviser to the Jubilee line project, believed the work would affect the tower. In his opinion,no further lean should go beyond a safety limit of 27.5 millimetres over existing lean of 220.millimetres.

To keep the lean within this limit,Burland told the British Association about the new method of pumping grout immediately under the base of the tower.More than 300 tons of grout were pumped in during construction. The tower's additional lean went between 10.and 25 millimetres, but never passed 27.5 millime_Ires.

After the construction work was completed in late 1997,a review of movements in nearby walls showed that the building was in better shape than had been thought before and the safety limit was raised to 35 millimetres before any action needs to be taken.

Since 1997,the tower has continued to lean,Burland told Modern Construction. The latest measurements, taken this year, suggest that the tower's lean had just reached 35 milllmetres. But following regular re— examinations of the tower, experts are sure that the tower has stabilised(稳定).A spokesman for London Underg-round says:“We understand the tower has stabilised and returned to its normal movement cycle.”

  From Modern Construction,16 September,2000.
