The long running argument between Australians and New Zealanders regarding the advantages of their different accent has restarted in China over English language courses.

Despite the popularity of a radio Australia English course in some parts of the country, Chinese broadcasting officials said that some New Zealanders were trying to damage Australian language because of Australia accent. A New Zealander Embassy official in Beijing said there had never been any official talks about this matter. But the local broadcasting officials said the New Zealand language teachers in China were saying New Zealand accent was closer than the Australia accent to proper spoken English.

A spokesperson from the Australian Embassy said the Chinese had given them information that they actually like English courses conducted by Australians because the accent was “not too British nor too American”.

John Crone, head of radio Australia's North Asia Department which put together the recent English from Australia course that got big success in Henan Province, China, said he knew about the current accent debate. “We do get remarks from the Chinese regarding the advantages of English from the United Kingdom, United States and other places,” he said.

“Accent are important and the Chinese can find the Australia accent difficult if they have not been exposed to it before. We also notice the New Zealand efforts in short wave radio English courses and there's certainly a place for them, but Australia is a bigger country with more resources and can do more than New Zealand. What we are hoping to so is to get the Chinese used to the way we talk, because in the end what's important is not how they say things, but that they can fully understand different accents.”

Radio Australia's English from Australia course was broadcast for nine months from May last year on Henan provincial radio, which may have listeners reaching or close to 100 million. Listeners to the course were estimated at 30,000, made up of high school and university students, scientists and, technicians and simply lovers of the English language, including some prisoners. Although the twice-daily course finished in January this year, its strong effort was put to the high level by a follow-up contest.

Some of the older people in the United States face a number of serious problems. For one thing, more than ten per cent of all “senior citizens” in the United States are extremely poor. As a matter of fact, recent reports suggest that about one-seventh of the people over the age of sixty-five live below the poverty level. Aged people also have more health problems than younger people. A third area for concern comes from the fart that the public transportation has not been designed with old people in mind; their activities are often limited to whatever is within walking distance. And finally, there is the separation from family, which causes loneliness. Many older people live by themselves (this is particularly true of widows(寡妇) and divorced(离婚的) women . Time and time again, one may be warned, “your name will be mud.” Many have used the expression in the mistaken belief that it has something to do with the kind of dirt found in the streets or on unclean river bottoms. But the expression comes from the name of Doctor Samuel Alexander Mudd, a physician who fixed the broken leg of John Willes Booth, the man who killed President Abraham Lincoln. Doctor Mudd treated Booth's injured leg without knowing who he was.

A small group helped Booth to plan Lincoln's murder. They were all caught and sentenced to death or prison terms.

Doctor Mudd had nothing to do with Lincoln's murder or with any of the men who had planned it. All seemed to show that he was an innocent man. But he had given some kind of help only to leave Booth to escape. This in itself was a crime then. And so, Doctor Mudd was sentenced to prison fox life.

In prison, Doctor Mudd saved many prisoners and guards in a yellow fever outbreak. President Andrew Johnson pardoned him in 1869, after the doctor had spent almost four years in prison.

The American people considered the murder of Lincoln a heavy blow to them. It filled them with bitterness that lasted may years. They hated Booth very much and they also hated anybody who had helped the murderer in any way. Doctor Mudd was freed, but people never forgave him and his name passed into American folk speech as something bad, hateful. Our skins let us know whether the air is wet or dry, whether surfaces are wet without being sticky or slippery(滑). From the light pressure, we can know how deeply a finger is pushed into water at body temperature, even if the finger is in a rubber glove which keeps the skin completely dry. Many other animals, with highly sensitive skins, appear to be able to learn skill more about their environment. Often they do so without employing any of the five senses.

By examining the abilities of other members of the animal kingdom, we come to realize that a human being has far more possibilities than those are made use of. We give not enough care to ever so many of our senses in paying particular attention to the five major ones. At the same time, a comparison between animals and man draws attention to the limitations of each sense. The part of the spectrum(光谱) seen by color-conscious men as red is non-existent for honey-bees. But a bee can see far more in flowers than we, because the ultra-violet(紫外线) to which our eyes are blind is a stimulating part of the insects spectrum, and for honey-bees at least, make up a separate color.

Nations should be well on with the building of huge industrial complexes for the recycling of waste. The word rubbish could lose its meaning because everything which goes into the dumps would be made into something useful. Even the most dangerous and unpleasant wastes would provide energy if nothing else.

The latest project is to take a city of around half a million inhabitants and discover exactly what raw materials go into it and what go out. The aim is to find out how much of these raw materials could be provided if a plant for recycling waste were built just outside the city. This plant would recycle not only metal such as steel, lead and copper, but also paper and rubber as well.

Another new project is being set up to discover the best ways of sorting and separating the rubbish. When this project is complete, the rubbish will be processed like this: First, it will pass through sharp metal bars which will tear open the plastic bags in which rubbish is usually packed; then it will pass through a powerful fan to separate the lightest elements from the heavy solids; after that founders and rollers will break up everything that can be broken. Finally, the rubbish will pass under magnets(磁铁), which will remove the bits of iron and steel; the rubber and plastic will then be sorted out in the final stage.

The first full-scale giant recycling plants are perhaps fifteen years away. Indeed, with the growing cost of transporting rubbish to more distant dumps, some big cities will be forced to build their own recycling plants before long.

4.The first full-scale huge recycling plants ________.

[ ]

A.began to operate fifteen years ago

Dog owners now have a little help understanding their furry friends. A new device called Bow-Lingual “translates” dog barks into English, Korea or Japanese.

Bow-Lingual's Japanese inventors spent much time and money-analyzing dog barks. They found that dog noises can be broken down into six different emotions: happiness, sadness, frustration, anger, assertion and desire.

“Avoid the rush hour” must be the slogan of large cities all over the world. Wherever you look it's people, people, people. The trains which leave or arrive every few minutes are packed. The streets are so crowded; there is hardly room to move on the pavements. It takes ages for a bus to get to you because the traffic on the roads has almost come to a standstill. Even when a bus does at last arrive, it's so full, it can't take any more passengers. The smallest unexpected event can bring about conditions of complete chaos. The strange thing is not that people stand these conditions, but that they actually choose them in preference to anything else.

The cost of living is also very high. Just about everything you buy is likely to he more expensive than it would be in the country. Besides, the crime rate in moat cities is very high.
