Harvard University is onboth sides of the Charies River. The old institution of higher learning in the United States was founded in 1636. In 1638 it was named for John Harvard, its first founder. During the 1640s the college was enlarged although it was short of money. Meant to be an institution for the education of Puritan ministers(清教牧师),it grew to be an institution of general education, and new and more subjects and policies(政策)were introduced. In the eighteenth century, particularly under John Leverett17081724, the number of the students and campus equipment increased while the religious(宗教的)color decreased. In its early years, the college was largely supported by the English colony and the New England community as a whole, but support soon came in the form of gifts, and in 1823 the state money was received for the last time. Under Charles W. Eliot, the college became a great modern university, its basic courses improved and enlarged, the graduate school was set up for those who finished their four-year undergraduate study, and the law and medical schools were reorganized. Eliot is also famous for his introduction of the elective system at Harvard. Besides Harvard College, the university includes schools of divinity1816, law1817, arts and science1872, education1920, engineering1935, reorganization of Lawrence Science School of 1847, public administration 1935. Harvard also has schools of business administration1980; medicine1782, public health1922, and dental health1941. Radcliffe College for women is connected with Harvard; its students are taught by Harvard professors and receive diplomas given by Harvard. The university library, among the nation’s finest, houses over 8 million volumes, and the Fogg Museum of Art is one of the finest university museums in the world. As everybody knows, tourism plays an important part in the development of a country’s economy, the life of the nation and international cooperation. Individually, it can enlarge our personal perspective and knowledge, and make us feel good.

However, tourism can also lead to pollution and the destruction of places of interest which are difficult to avoid.

Fortunately, “Green Tourism” is now being promoted and developed all over the world. As time goes by, people will begin to realize the importance of these places of interest. “Green Tourism” teaches people to love nature more and to consciously protect it by enjoying its beautiful scenery and learning more about it. “Green Tourism” is the best kind of tourism as its purpose is to appreciate and research natural environments including wild plants and animals, and of course the cultures of many places.

Compared with traditional(传统的)tourism, the main characteristic(特色)of “Green Tourism” is learning more about nature and people. Traditionally, people travel the world to amuse themselves and pass time pleasantly. But “Green Tourists” are different. They travel because they are attracted by the characteristics of protected areas. They want to make good use of natural resources but not use them up. For example, they research the wildlife, the culture and the customs of a place so that they can learn more about the history and value of the area.

In short, “Green Tourism” has a purpose and a plan, but not to pollute or destroy our places of interest.

Calvin Coolidge, thirtieth president of United States, was a person who hated gossiping(闲聊). He had no time for small talk. The following two incidents clearly show how Coolidge enjoyed silence.

When he was vice-president, Coolidge had plenty of opportunities to take part in Washington’s social life, especially the many dinner parties. Death valley is one of the most famous deserts in the United States, covering a wide area with its alkali(碱性)sand. Almost 20 percent of this area is well below sea level, and bad water, a salt water pool, is about 280 feet below sea level and it is the lowest point in the United States.

Long ago the Panamint Indians called this place Tomesha—the land of fire. Death Valley’s present name dates back to 1849 when a group of miners coming across from Nevada became lost in its unpleasantness and hugeness and their adventure ended with a disaster. Today Death Valley has been declared a National Monument and is crossed by several well-marked roads where good services can be found easily. Luckily the changes created by human settlement has hardly ruined the special beauty of this place.

Here nature created a lot of surprising scenes, almost like the sights on the moon, every changing as the frequent wind moves the sand about, showing the most unusual colors. One of the most astonishing and variable parts of Death Valley is the Devil’s Golf Course, where it seems hard for one to tell reality from terrible dreams. Sand sculptures(泥雕)stand on a frightening ground, as evening shadows move and lengthen.

1.The name of the valley comes from ________.

    A. an Indian name

    B.the local people

    C.a National Monument

D.the death of the miners

2. From the passage we can learn that ________.

    A. people can find gas stations, cafes and hotels in the desert

B.no one had ever known the desert before the miners

C.it’s still not easy to travel across the desert

3. From the passage we can see the writer ________ the Death Valley.

    A.is fearful of

    B.appreciates

Moon landing. The computer chip. Genetic engineering. The artificial heart. The achievements of U.S. scientists are known and admired throughout the world. But whether American highest position in research and technology will continue into the 21st century is far from certain. Thirty-two years after the Russians sent up Sputnik setting off a hot race to produce more and better U.S. physicists, the scientific pipeline is drying up. The reason for this crisis(危机): American science education is in disorder.

In an Educational Testing Service study of five countries and four Canadian provinces, American 13-year-olds graded last in math and nearly last in science.

How did America, birthplace of Thomas Edison and Wright brothers come to such a dangerous situation? One reason is lack of enough financial support for science education. After Sputnik, funding(基金)for the National Science Foundation, the leading U.S. founder of scientific research, shot up from 18 million dollars to 130 million dollars. By 1982 financing for NSFS education had fallen rapidly to zero.

To be sure, changeable funding is only one reason why U.S. scientists are becoming a scarce commodity(稀有商品). The image of scientists is less lustrous than it was in the 50’s and 60’s when men and women in lab coats were seen as national heroes helping the U.S. beat the Russians to the moon. Today, the country’s brightest desire is to be bankers and lawyers, not chemists or rocket designers.

    A. examples of American scientific achievements

    B.names of modern technology

    C.seen everywhere throughout the world

    D.obtained by Russia

B.men and women in lab coats are seen as national heroes

C.Thomas Edison and Wright brothers died

3.According to the passage Sputnik is _______.

    A. a research project of National Science Foundation

B.the name of an education department

    C.a scientific achievement of Russia

    D.a scarce commodity

4. The word “lustrous” in the last paragraph can be replaced by_______.

"Earthquake! "The word flashed in my brain. A roaring sound filled my ears. I tried to slide beneath my desk. The desk did a wild tap dance, slipping and sliding towards the center of the room. I twisted my body and grabbed at the windowsill behind me, somehow kicking free of my dancing chair. I tried to stand. My legs skated away as if on a bucking escalator.

My fingers shaked, grasped and help the windowsill tightly. Somewhere through the roar sounded the terrified scream of some wounded animal. I looked behind me and tried to steady my gaze on the other kids but the scene was a dizzy nightmare. Some of the class were sitting in the middle of the room, surrounded by chairs and desks. One girl was screaming. A boy was trying to claw his way across the floor to the door in a crazy overarm crawl.

My grip froze me to the windowsill.

I cried aloud, "I'm going to die. I'm going to die. Save me, I'm not ready to die, I'm not ready!"

I hunched forward on my knees and pressed my face against my clenched fingers. I looked at the backs of my fingers and stupidly noticed the fragile pale hairs growing out of the pores. The fingers would soon cease to exist. Somehow the impending horror of my death was too terrible to even cry about.

Suddenly, I became aware that the rocking had ceased. Perhaps I wasn't going to die.
