Nobody likes staying at home on a public holiday, especially when the weather is fine. Last August we decided to spend the day in the country. The only difficulty was that millions of other people had exactly the same idea.We moved out of the city slowly behind a long line of ears, but at last we came to a quiet country road and after some time, stopped at a lonely farm. We had brought plenty of food with us and we got it out of the car. It was very peaceful in the cool grass until we heard bells ringing at the top of the hill. Colour helps you see things. But man and some monkeys and apes (猿)are the only mammals (哺乳动物) that can see colour. To any other mammal, such as the dog, the world looks like a black-and-white photo. Dogs hunt mainly by listening and sniffing (闻).

Like other animals, dogs see best when things move. The animals they hunt seem to know this. A hunted rabbit or deer will “freeze”. Then the dog may not see it at all.

Birds can see colour. They need to, because they fly and need to find places to land.Colour helps them judge distance and shape. In this way they are able to catch bugs (昆虫) in the air or to light on branches.

Some birds see things even better than you do. The birds that eat bugs can see them from far away. And even a very young bird can see a hawk high in the sky. So sharp eyes and a sense of colour help birds find food and also help them find where their enemies are.

(1)________can see colour.

[ ]

B.All the mammals

C.Man and dogs

Dear Wei and Li Lan,

Hi from Canada! We are having a wonderful holiday. We haven't seen a bear yet, but there are bears and deer in the forests around the lake where we're staying. The bears often go to the rubbish dump to look for food scraps. Perhaps we'll go sightseeing at the dump! We will need to be careful because bears are quite dangerous. They will attack if you surprise them, so people carry bells when they are out walking or biking to warn the bears away.

On our first night we saw an amazing fireworks show. It doesn't get dark here until 10 o'clock, so it was a really late night for us.

Last night we rode in a gondola 2,000 metres to the top of Whistler Mountain. It was like floating in a glass bubble; so peaceful and still. The city lights were beautiful.

Today we canoed around the lake, and had a very short swim. It was freezing. The weather has been sunny, but not like the weather at home.

Bye for now. We will be home next week.

Many families in the United States have a larger income now than ever before, but people are finding it difficult to make ends meet(收支平衡)anyway. Almost everyone is wondering, “What happens to all my money? I never seem to have anything to put away.”

Why isn't a dollar worth as much as it used to be? One dollar is always worth the same amount, that is, 100 cents. But the value of a dollar is how much it can buy. The value of money depends on the cost of living. Economists say that the cost of living is the money that a family must pay for the necessities of life such as food, housing or rent, clothes and medical expenses. For many years now, the cost of living has increased greatly, so the value of the dollar has decreased(贬值). When a dollar has a low value, you cannot buy as many things with it.

No one fully understands why the cost of living keeps increasing, but economists(经济学家)believe that workers and producers can make prices go up. As workers earn more money, they have more money to spend, so they demand more goods. If there is a great demand for certain goods, the prices of these goods go up. At the same time, if there is a shortage of these goods, the prices also go up. For example, if everyone wants to buy more and more gas, the price of gas goes up. When companies withhold gas from buyers, they can also make the price of gas go up.

Families need to know what happens to their money. They need to make their income meet the cost of living, so many people plan a family budget(预算). A budget is a list of monthly expenses. If your expenses add up to more than your income, you must find ways to save money. Maybe you are spending too much on entertainment. Or if you are spending too much on clothes, you may want to sew(缝制)your own clothes. Budgeting helps you spend your money wisely as the cost of living increases.

(1)What has troubled many families in the United States?

[ ]

A. A not-large-enough income.

B. Nothing is left over to put away.

C. The increasing cost of living.

D. A shortage of certain goods.

(2)__________ determines the value of the dollar.

[ ]

A. The government

B. The cost of living

C. The economist

D. The bank

(3)Why does the cost of living keep increasing?

[ ]

A. There are always shortages of goods.

B. The workers are getting lower and lower pay.

C. The government makes no interference.

D. People demand more and better goods.

(4)According to the writer, _________ fully understand(s) why the cost of living keeps increasing.

[ ]

A. some people
B. few people
C. only economists
D. no one

(5)Budgeting helps _________.

[ ]

A. one to make his income meet the cost of living

B. the government to battle the rising cost of living

C. merchants to produce more goods

D. the workers to earn more money

Few Americans stay for a lifetime. We move from town or city to suburb, from high school to college in a different state, from a job in one region to a better job elsewhere, from the home where we raise our children to the home where we plan to live in retirement. With each move we are forever making new friends, who become part of our new life at that time.

For many of us the summer is a special time for forming new friendships. Today millions of Americans vocation abroad, and they go not only to see new sights but also in those places where they do not feel too strange with the hope of meeting new people, No one really expects a vacation trip to produce a close friend. But surely the beginning of a friendship is possible.

But as we use the word, “friend” can be applied to a wide range of relationships to someone has known for a few weeks in a new place, to a fellow worker, to a childhood playmate, to a man or woman, to a trusted confident. There are real differences among these relations for Americans, a friendship may be superficial, casual, situational of deep and enduring. But to a European, who sees only our surface behavior, the differences are not clear.

[ ]

A. going to college

B. getting a better job

C. finding a place to live in retirement

D. saving money

[ ]

A. are friendless

Are some people born clever, and others born stupid? Or is intelligence developed by our environment and our experience? Strangely enough, the answers to these questions are Yes. To some extent our intelligence is given to us at birth, and no amount of special education can make a genius out of a child born with low intelligence. On the other hand, a child who lives in a boring environment will develop his intelligence are fixed at birth, whether or not he reaches those limits will depend on his environment. This view, now held by most experts, can be supported in a number of ways.

It is easy to show that intelligence is to some extent something we are born with. The closer the blood relationship between two people, the closer they are likely to be intelligent. Thus if we take two unrelated people at random from the population, it is likely that their degree of intelligence will be completely different. If, on the other hand, we take two identical twins, they will be as intelligent as each other. Relations like brothers and sisters, parents and children, usually have similar intelligence and this clearly suggests that intelligence depends on birth.

Imagine now that we take two identical twins and put them in different environments. We might send one, for example, to a university and the other to a factory where the work is boring. We should soon find differences in intelligence developing and this shows that environment as well as birth plays a part. This conclusion is also suggested by the fact that people who live in close touch with each other, but who are not related at all are likely to have similar degree of intelligence.

(1)The writer is in favor of the view that man's intelligence is given to him ________.

[ ]

A. at birth

B. through education

C. both at birth and through education

D. neither at birth nor through education

(2)If a child is born with low intelligence, he cannot __________.

[ ]

A. become a genius

B. still become a genius if he should be given

C. exceed intelligence limits in rich surroundings

D. teach his intelligence in his life

(3)In the second paragraph “if we take two unrelated people at random from the population” means “if we”.

[ ]

A. pick out any two persons

B. pick out two different persons

C. choose two persons who are relatives

D. choose two persons with different intelligence

(4)The example of the twins going to college and to a factory

separately shows __________.

[ ]

A. the importance of their intelligence

B. the effect of environment on intelligence

C. the importance of their positions

D. the part that birth plays

(5)The best title of this passage can be __________.

[ ]

A. Surroundings

C. Dependence on Environment

There are nearly a million migrant (移民)workers in the United States. Most of them are Mexican Americans and black Americans. They go from state to state, from one farm to another, to pick fruit and vegetables. They work long hours but at night they go to bed hungrily. The farm owners give them very low pay and cheat them in every way.

Take the Johnsons for example, they have a six-month-old baby and five other children. At the moment they are on a farm in south California, picking fruit and vegetables.

They have been given one very small room in the migrant camp(营地)on the farm. The thin walls have big holes in them and the roof lets in the rain.

“When it rains,” Mrs. Johnson said. “It comes in on our bed. I have to stand up with the baby in my arms so that he doesn't get wet and catch cold.”

The Johnsons do their own cooking, but shopping isn't easy. The nearest town is far away and the migrant workers are forced to buy most things in the small shop in the camp. This shop belongs to the owner and the prices there are much higher than in the town. “It doesn't seem right, ”said Mr Johnson.

(1)The migrant workers are those who _________.

[ ]

A. grow fruit and vegetables on their farm

B. have to move about for a job

C. like to travel about from one state to another

D. come from Mexico

(2)There are _________ people in Johnson's family.

[ ]

A. eight
B. five
C. seven
D. nine

(3)If it rains, Mrs. Johnson couldn't sleep because _________.

[ ]

A. she has to feed her baby

B. the rain is too noisy

C. her bed is wet and it affects her baby

D. her baby likes rain and wants to get wet

(4)Shopping isn't easy for the Johnsons because ___________.

[ ]

A. they're far away from the nearest town and there's no shop in

the neighbourhood

B. The shop near their home sells expensive things

C. They have no money to buy things

D. They don't want to buy things in the shop which belongs to their owner
