No one is glad to hear that his body has to be cut open by a surgeon (处科医生) and part of it taken out. Today, however, we needn't worry about feeling pain during the operation. The sick person falls into a kind of sleep, and when he awakes, the operation is finished. But these happy conditions are fairly new. It is not many years since a man who had to have an operation felt all its pain.

Long ago, an operation had usually to be done while the sick man could feel everything. The sick man had to be held down on a table by force while the doctors did their best for him. He could feel all the pain if his leg or arm was being cut off, and his fearful cries filled the room and the hearts of those who watched.

Soon after 1770,Josept Priestley discovered a gas which is now called “laughing gas”. Laughing gas became known in America. Young men and women went to parties to try it. Most of them spent their time laughing. But one man at a party, Horace Wells noticed that people didn't seem to feel pain when they were using this gas. He decided to make an experiment on himself. He asked a friend to help him.

Wells took some of the gas, and his friend pulled out one of Wells' teeth. Wells felt no pain at all.

As he didn't know enough about laughing gas, he gave a man less gas than he should have. The man cried out with pain when his tooth was being pulled out.

Wells tried again, but this time he gave too much of the gas, and the man died. Wells never forgot this terrible event.

No man can change the weather. Nobody can control the weather. But if we read correctly the signs around us, we can tell what the more important changes in the weather will be. This way of telling what the weather will be like on the following day or two is called weather forecasting.

For many centuries and in all countries people have studied the weather and tried to make weather forecasting. Sometimes people have studied the weather and tried to make weather forecasting. Sometimes distant objects such as hills and tall trees seem to be very clear and near. This is a sign of much water vapor in the air, and therefore rain will probably come.

Rings round the sun are a sign of coming rain. Many people feel in their bones the coming of wet weather. Their joints ache. Some birds fly high if fine weather is coming but they fly near the ground if rainy or stormy weather is on the way. It is probably because of the insects which they are hunting that they fly low.

If you see a rainbow during rainy weather, this is a sign that the weather will become clear and fine. Such rainbows always come in the evenings. If the stars twinkle clearly at night, then fair weather will continue. If a fog appears in the morning, just about sunrise then the day will be warm. Instead, if a fog appears in the evening the next day will be wet weather.

If sunset is mostly red in color, then the following day will be fine. If a rainbow appears in the morning, rainy weather will probably come.

Most of the above sayings have been made by people who have used their eyes and brains to make weather forecasting.

Education is not an end, but a means to an end. In other words, we do not educate children only for the purpose of educating them; our purpose is to prepare them for life. As soon as we realize this fact, We will understand that it is very important to choose a system of education which will really prepare children for life. It is not enough just to choose the first system of education one finds, or to continue with one's old system of education without examining it to see whether it is in fact suitable or not.

In many modern countries it has for some time been fashionable to think that, by free education for all--whether rich or poor, clever or stupid--one can solve all the problems of society and build a perfect nation. But we can already see that free education for all is not enough: we find in such countries a far large number of people with university degrees than there are jobs for them to fill. Because of their degrees, they refuse to do that they consider “low”work;and,in fact, work with the hands is thought to be dirty, shameful in such countries.

But we have only to think a moment to understand that the work of a completely uneducated farmer is far more important than that of professor: we can live without education, but we die if we have no food. If no one cleaned our streets and took the rubbish away from our houses, we would have terrible disease in our towns. In countries where there are no servants because everyone is ashamed to do such work, scientists have to waste much of their time doing housework.

In fact, when we say that all of us must be educated to prepare for life, it means that we must be educated in such a way that, firstly, each of us can do whatever job is suited to his brain and ability and, secondly, that we can realize that all jobs are necessary to society, and that it is very bad to be ashamed to one's work, or to scorn (藐视,轻蔑) someone else's. Only such a type of education can be called valuable to society.

(1)Education is ________.

[ ]

B. a means

D. fashionable

(2)In our country, the educational purpose is ________.

[ ]

A. to prepare children for life

Although April did not bring us the rains we all hoped for, and although the Central Valley doesn't generally experience the atmospheric (大气的) sound and lightning that can accompany those rains, it is still important for parents to be able to answer the youthful questions about thunder and lightning.

The reason these two wonders of nature are so difficult for many adults to explain to children is that they are not very well understood by adults themselves. For example, did you know that the lightning we see flashing down to the earth from a cloud is actually flashing up to a cloud from the earth? Our eyes trick us into thinking we see a downward motion when it's actually the other way around. But then, if we believed only what we think and we see, we'd still insist that the sun rises in the morning and sets at night.

Most lightning flashes take place inside a cloud, and only a relative few can be seen jumping between two clouds or between earth and a cloud. But, with about 2,000 thunderstorms taking place above the earth every minute of the day and night, there's enough activity to produce about 100 lightning strikes on earth every second.

Parents can use thunder and lightning to help them learn more about the world around them. When children understand that the light of the lightning flashing reaches their eyes almost at the same moment, but the sound of the thunder takes about 5 seconds to travel just one mile, they can begin to time the interval between the flash and the crash to learn how close they were to the actual spark

(1)According to the author, in the area of the Central Valley,________.

[ ]

A. rains usually come without thunder and lightning

B. it is usually dry in April

C. children pay no attention to natural phenomena

D. parents are not interested in thunder and lightning

(2)We believe that lightning is a downward motion because ________.

[ ]

A. we were taught so by our teachers from our childhood ________.

B. we are deceived by our sense of vision

C. it is a common natural phenomenon

D. it is a truth proved by science

(3)Which is TRUE about lightning according to the passage?

[ ]

A. Only a small number of lightning strikes occur on earth.

B. Lightning travels slower than thunder.

C. Lightning flashes usually jump from one cloud to another.

D. There are far more lightning strikes occurring on earth we can imagine.

(4)The word “activity” (Para.3) is most closely related to the word (s) ________.

[ ]

A. cloud

B. lightning strikes

C. lightning flashes

D. thunderstorms

(5)It can be concluded from the passage that ________.

[ ]

A. we should not believe what we see or hear

B. things moving downward are more noticeable

C. people often have wrong concepts about ordinary phenomena

D. adults are not as good as children in observing natural phenomena

The first one is about drinking. Now, you may not buy alcohol in this country if you are under 18 years of age, nor may your friends buy it for you. Secondly, noise. Enjoy yourselves by all means, but please don't make unnecessary noise, particularly at night. We ask you to respect other people who may wish to be quiet.

For a small town, Manhattan ,Kansas has some big surprises, And one of them is the Holiday Inn Hotel, with rooms built around a swimming pool and a friendly family atmosphere.

The Holiday Inn is where Manhattan people often go for a special party or a night out. A lot of them choose to eat in the brightly-lit restaurant near the pool. And many of them will be served by Ellen Logan, who has worked as a waitress here for more than two years.

Ellen, like most of the waitresses is also a student. She comes from Nebraska, but she's planning one day to be a veterinary surgeon, and to care for small animals. But in order to support herself at college, she works twenty hours a week at the Holiday Inn.

Ellen soon learns what every waitress finds out. You had better have a good pair of shoes. She paid forty-five dollars for hers, much more than she would usually spend. She's discovered something else, too. You don't have to know much about food be a good waitress, but you do have to know a lot about people.

“A lot of business people always stay here when they come to Manhattan,” she explains. “They like you to recognize them and remember their favorite dishes. But some couples come for a night out together. They just want to be left alone. Then there are people who can't make up their minds. They look down at the menu and say ‘What do you suggest! So I ask them how hungry they are. If they say‘ Not very,’ I suggest the salad bar with soup, salad, bread, and a fruit plate. But if they say they're very hungry, I suggest a Kansas Strip Steak, with potatoes or rice. You get salad and bread as well. It's very nice. Real good value.”

Ellen may get tired feet sometimes, but at least she's learning too much about people. She'll probably make a good animal doctor, but if she finds she doesn't like it after all, she can always become a psychiatrist (心理医生) instead.
