Good morning. I'm speaking to you today from Beijing. In just two days, I've seen some of the rich history and remarkable changes that are taking place in China, home to nearly one- quarter of the world's population.
China is the oldest civilization on Earth. In Xi'an, on Friday, I saw the old and the new China, from magnificent Terra Cotta Warriors sculpted by artisans 2,000 years before America was founded, to the beginnings of democracy in a nearby village, where residents soon will hold elections.
I've been touched by the warm reception given to me, my family, and the members of Congress travelling with us. Tens of thousands of Chinese families have lined the streets to greet us. For all these people, China is changing. I see cell phones, beepers, new office buildings.
China is no longer the same country it was when president Nixon first came here 26 years ago. Never before have so many Chinese had the opportunity to start businesses, lift their families out of poverty, choose where to live, work, and travel, and enjoy the fruits of their labors.
Today in Beijing I am meeting with China' s leaders to talk about the future of our two countries and a relationship between us that is essential to a peaceful, stable, and prosperous world in the next century. We talked about the United States and China's mutual interests ---- promoting peace in Korea, where 400,000 U.S. soldiers still risk their lives to patrol the Cold Wars last frontier; preventing a nuclear arms race between India and Pakistan; restoring economic stability in Asia; stopping the spread of unclear soldiers chemical, and biological weapons and the misspread of unclear soldiers chemical, and biological weapons and the missiles to deliver them; combating international crime and drug trafficking; preserving the environment; and opening trade.
China is important to our future, with the largest population on Earth, a permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council, an economy increasingly connected to our own. Without China, it will be difficult to face the challenges. In dealing with China, we must stay true to a course that is both principled and pragmatic. We must continue to expand our areas of cooperation, even as we deal directly with out differences. With China, we can build a safer, more prosperous future for our children, a world of unlimited possibility in the new century
Thanks for listening.

London has a new magazine. But it is not printed on paper. Everyone who has a television can receive it because it is on TV. In order to read this magazine, you have to have a decoder. Each page of it is numbered, so you only have to dial the number to choose which subject you want to read about. There is a wide choice -- everything is included from cooking to the latest sports news. If you want to read the news, the first thing you have to turn to is the index (索引) page which has an easy-to-remember page number, 100 for example. Then you start choosing what you want to read. The news is on page 101 to 109 so you push out the numbers and the news appears written across your screen. Perhaps you want to go out in the afternoon, so you press 181, and a brightly coloured weather map appears on the screen. But the weather is terrible so you decide to go shopping and dial 162 for a list of the week's best bargains. But should you drive or take the train? To answer that question you only have to press 189 for the traffic report. It is very simple to use. But probably the best thing about the service is that it is being updated all the time. Journalists type new material directly onto the screen and whole pages of the magazine can be replaced in minutes.London already has three services. One, transmitted (输送) by ITV, is called ORACLE while the other two, on BBC, are called CEEFAX because they let you see facts Although CEEFAX and ORACLE have been operating for some time, they have not been well publicized.BBC engineers do not think that their idea will ever replace books and newspapers because they can be taken with you everywhere. But many people would agree that this is a breakthrough (突破) as great as the invention of printing, which could change not just our reading habits but our whole way of life.
(1)The novelty (新颖) of magazine lies in ________.

An allowance is an important tool for teaching kids how to budget, save and make their own decisions. Children remember and learn from mistakes when their own dollars are lost or spent foolishly.
How large an allowance is appropriate? Experts say there is not fight amount. Actual amounts differ from region to region, and from family to family.
To set an appropriate allowance for your child, work up a weekly budget. Allow for entertainment expenditures such as movies and snacks. Next, include everyday expenses such as lunch money, bus fare, school supplies. “If you make the child responsible for these bills' ,” says Josephine Swanson, a consumer specialist, “he or she will learn to budget for necessary expenditures.”
Finally, add some extra money to make saving possible. If you can, keep your child's allowance in line with that of his friends. A child whose purchasing power falls away below his peers' can feel left out.
It can be tough, but avoid excusing your children when they make a mistake with their allowance. When Brooke Stephens was ten and growing up in Jacksonville, her mother gave her $ 5 a week, $ 1.75 of which was for bus fare and lunch. “If you lose your money,” Brook's mother told her, “you walk home.”
One week the girl spent all her allowance in a candy store; then she called home for a fide. “Mom made me walk home, ” recalls Stephens, now a financial planner in Brooklyn. “At first I was angry. But I finally realized that she was trying to teach me an important lesson.”
Experts advise that an allowance should not be tied directly to a child's daily chores. Kids should help around the house not because they get paid for it but because they share responsibilities as members of a family. You might, however, pay a child for doing extra jobs at home, that can develop his or her initiative.
(1)What does the passage mainly discuss?

(3)In Paragraph 4, the words “his peers” refer to ________.
[ ]
A.his parents

A.To question the opinion about pocket money.
B.To compare Stephens with other financial experts.
C.To explain that parents should be strict when children are developing good habits about money.

A child's world is fresh and new and beautiful, full of wonder and excitement, It is our misfortune that for most of us that cleared vision, the true instinct for what is beautiful, is dimmed and even lost before we reach adulthood. If I had influence with the good fairy who is supposed to be responsible for the Christening of all children, I should ask that her gift to each child in the world be a sense of wonder so undeniable that it would last throughout life, as an unfailing protection against the boredom of later years, the inattention of things that are artificial, the alienation (疏远) from the sources of our strength.
If a child is to keep alive his inborn sense of wonder without any such gift from the fairies, he needs the companionship of at least one adult who can share it, rediscovering with him the joy, excitement and mystery of the world we live in, parents often have a sense of inadequacy when facing on the one hand the eager, sensitive mind of a child and, on the other, a world of complex physical nature, confused by a life so various and unfamiliar that it seems hopeless to reduce it to order and knowledge. In a mood of self-defeat, they exclaim, “How can I possibly teach my child about nature -- why, I don't even know one bird from another?”
I sincerely believe that for the child, and for the parent seeking to guide him, it is not half so important to know as to feel. If facts are the sees that later produce knowledge and wisdom, then the emotions and impressions of the senses are the fertile soil in which the seeds must grow. The years of early childhood are the time to prepare the soil. Once the emotions have been aroused -- a sense of the beautiful, the excitement of the new and unknown, a feeling of sympathy, pity, admiration or love -- then we wish for knowledge about the object of our emotional response. Once found, it has lasting meaning, It is more important to prepare the way for the child to want to know than to put him on a load of facts he is ready to understand.
(1)The word “instinct” can be best replaced by ________.
[ ]
(2)According to the first paragraph, which of the following statements is Not true?
[ ]
A.Adults often lack a sense of wonder.
B.Fairies make a child's world fresh and full of wonder.
C.Children may lose their sense of wonder when they grow up.
D.Adults are concerned with things that are artificial.
(3)It can be learned from the second paragraph that ________.
[ ]
A.parents can never teach their children about nature
B.parents should learn from their children
C.parents often do not know much about nature themselves
D.parents should know one bird from another
(4)What does the author think about facts?
[ ]
A.Facts are less important than the ability to feel.
B.Facts are the most important things for children.
C.Facts are meaningless for children.
D.Facts are so undeniable that they should be recognized without prejudice.
(5)The best title of this passage can be ________.
[ ]
A.Children and parents
B.Children and Adulthood
C.Facts and Emotions
D.Keeping Alive the Sense of Wonder

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项A、B、C、D中选出最佳选项.
No man can change the weather. Nobody can control the weather. But if we read the signs correctly we can tell what the more important changes in the weather will be. This way of telling what the weather will be like on the following day or two is called weather forecasting. People who do this are not making the weather. They are merely using their knowledge of the weather today, to tell us what the weather may be like tomorrow.
People for many centuries and in all countries have studied the weather and tried to make weather forecasts.
Something distant objects such as hills and tall trees seem to be very clear and near. This is a sign of much water vapour in the air, and therefore rain will probably come. When distant sounds are very clearly heard, then wet and stormy weather is on the way. Kings round the sun are a sign of coming rain.
Many people feel in their bones the coming of wet weather. Their joints aches. Some birds fly high if fine weather is on the way. This is probably because the insects, which they are hunting, then fly low.
If the stars twinkle clearly at night, then fine weather will continue. If a mist appears in the early morning, just about sunrise, then the day will be warm. If the sunset in mostly red in colour, then the following day will be fine.
Most of the above sayings have been made up by people who have used their eyes and their brains to forecast the weather. Some of the popular beliefs about the weather, however, are untrue. For example, many people say they can forecast the weather by looking at the noon. the state of the noon has nothing to do with the weather may happen to change with changes in the moon, but that is only chance.
Almost everyone listens to what the weatherman says. But he doesn't always tell us what we want, and once in a while he makes a mistake. Still, he probably comes closer to being correct than anyone else.
Some men spend their whole lives trying to forecast the weather. Such people collect exact information about the weather from all parts of the world. Each place sends its information at certain times each day to a central office where the weather information from all these places can be examined. The information received is put on to a map of the world, called a weather chart.
As scientists discover more and more about the weather in every part of the world, and satellites and computers are used to gather and analyse weather data, weather forecasting will become more and more certain. And we are quite certain sooner or later we will be able to change the weather!
Many people think they can tell what the weather is going to be like. But they hardly ever agree with each other. One man may say, “Do you see how cloudy it is in the east? It' s going to have fine weather tomorrow.” Another man will say, “Yes, it's cloudy in the east. We're going to have rain weather tomorrow. ”
People often look for the weather they want. When a farmer needs water, he looks for something to tell him it' s going to rain; he won' t believe anything else. When friends have a picnic, they are so sure the weather is going to clear up quickly that they sit eating their lunch while it rains.
(1)People who tell us what weather will be like on the following day or two can ________.
[ ]
A.make the weather we like
B.hardly control the weather
C.know when to plant
D.do something about the weather
(2)When distant sounds are very dearly heard we will ________.
[ ]
A.have rainy days
B.see swallows flying high
C.perhaps see a rainbow
D.have fine days
(3)People usually believe that ________.
[ ]
A.the moon has nothing to do with weather
B.they can forecast weather better than the weatherman
C.they can do something to change the weather data
D.they can read the weather signs correctly
(4)What is not mentioned in the text?
[ ]
A.The weatherman can read weather signs.
B.People often look for the weather they want.
C.In many places people are collecting weather data.
D.Weathermen will make mistakes in their weather forecasting.
(5)A weather chart is a map ________.
[ ]
A.showing what kind of weather we are going to have
B.drawn by the weatherman
C.marked with weather data
sent to the radio and TV stations

The expression,“lame duck”, can be heard in almost any American town or city, especially where people discuss politics. Most often, they use it to describe a politician who has come to the end of power--a Congressman, for example, who has a few more weeks in office and will then be out of a job.
There are a number of ideas as to where“lame duck” came from although the picture is clear enough--a duck that has had its wings clipped, or its web feet injured, and can no longer walk or waddle(walk with short steps, bending from one side to the other) like a healthy one.
The term seems to have crept(move slowly and quietly with the body close to the ground) into the American language some time after the Civil War of 1861~1865. One explanation is that it came from the language of hunters who felt that it was foolish to waste power or time on a dead duck.
Another explanation, however, says that the expression came from England. There it was used to describe a man who lost all his money in stocks(股票交易), was cleaned out (倾家荡产)and could not pay his debts. And-so the story does,--people showed little mercy (kindness or pity)for the poor fellow.
But in the United States people took the phrase to describe a congressman who failed to get reelected but still had a little time in office until his successor was sworn in (be sworn in = take office).
In time, the expression was used in a broader sense, generally describing any man whose days of power were coming to the end.It has often been to describe the position of an American president in the 2 years or so of his 2nd term. It is a difficult time for him, when Congress is ready to oppose him at every turn (at every moment; in every place). It may refuse to work with him simply because his days in the White House are numbered. His sun is setting. It is not a happy time. It is like old age coming on. And people, like animals, are cruel to lame ducks, ready to drive him out. Their eyes are already turned towards the new leader, the new man in command.
(1)It is likely that the expression“lame duck”________.
[ ]
A.has been widely used in the American language before the Civil War
B.has quietly come into the American language some time after the year of 1865
C.was used in the old English
D.has been used in both the USA and the UK since 1865 to express the same meaning
(2)When a person lost all his money in stocks, people ________.
[ ]
A.usually showed mercy for him
B.always has sympathy with him
C.hardly has sympathy with him
D.never drove him out

In the dark night of the desert a group of US Air Force scientists is testing a new device (设备) for guiding a missile(导弹) to its target. Designed to seek out the heat of an enemy aircraft engine, it is now going through its paces by tracing(跟踪)the movement of a flashlight waving thirty feet away in the darkness. A hundred yards away, unseen by the man, a rattlesnake sliding between the stones senses a patch of warmth. Although the snake's mechanism(机制) is small enough to be packed into a head the size of a nut, it can detect a change in temperature of one thousandth of a degree. Without a sound the snake closes in and strikes for the kill.
Whenever we look in the animal world we find the same story. Almost anything that man can do, nature has already done better. So, for the purpose of learning from nature, a new science called bionics has grown up. Its aim is to find out how animal's instruments work so that man can copy them for his own use.
Imagine being able to know a friend several miles off by his smell. Male silk moths(蛾)can do this. Their antennae(触角)are so sensitive to the chemical odor of female that they can detect their presence by picking up only one molecule (分子) of the chemical. Even with their most sensitive instruments, human cannot approach this perfection.
Studying beetle's(甲虫的)eyes has already paid off. A group of scientists in Germany found that a beetle can accurately(精确地) measure with its eyes the speed of a moving background. After finding out how a beetle accomplishes this scientists built a machine that operated on the same principle(原理). This instrument is able to determine the ground speed of moving aircraft with a high degree of accuracy.
(1)The writer compares the rattlesnake with a missile in order to ________.
[ ]
A.show the deadliness of the missile
B.demonstrate(论证)what bionics is
C.show that man is wiser than nature
D.demonstrate that a rattlesnake is very dangerous
(2)Study of the male silk moth might lead to a new method of ________.
[ ]
A.locating underground streams
B.making smooth cloth
C.detecting poisonous gas
D.communicating
(3)Which of the following can be used to replace the underlined word“accomplishes”?

A.Studying the eye of the beetle has helped scientists to measure speed of objects.
B.Male moths can know female moths several miles off by their smell.
C.Devices of animals discussed here serve a purpose similar to the skin of the human.
D.The military uses of bionics are one reason for developing this science.
(5)According to the passage, the goal for bionics is to ________.

The basic flag of the United States is one of the world's oldest national flags. Only the basic flags of Austria, Denmark, Great Britain, the Netherlands, Sweden, and Switzerland are older.
During the discovery and settlement of what is now the United States the flags of various European nations were flown over the land, as symbols of possession. Later, in the colonial and Revolutionary War Periods flags representing famous persons, places and events were flown in the American Colonies.
The first official flag of the United States was created by Congress on June 14,1777, It consisted of 13 alternate red and white stripes and 13 white stars in a field of blue, representing the 13 colonies that had declared their independence in 1776. Congress adopted a new flag of 15 stars and 15 stripes in 1795, to give representation to the two new states admitted into the Union, Vermont and Kentucky.
By 1817, there were 20 states in the Union, and it became apparent that adding one stripe for each new state would destroy the shape of the flag. As a result, Congress in 1818 restored the original design of 13 stripes and provided that each state was to be represented by one star. In 1912 President William. H. Taft made the first official provision for the arrangement of the stars. He ordered that there be six even rows of eight stars each. Previously the arrangement of the starts had been left to the flagmaker's desire. The evolution of the stars and stripes reflects the growth of the United States. After the admission of Hawaii into the Union in 1959, the flag was officially changed for the 26th time since its creation. There are many government flags flown in the United States in addition to the national flag. Among them are the presidents and vice-presidents flags and those of the federal departments and some federal agencies. Each state in the Union has an official flag. The United States Navy used special flags for signaling.
(1) Why were only the flags of various European nations flown over the land during the discovery and settlement period?
