A new study reported in a medical magazine concludes that even smokers who reach their 70sare likely to live longer if they stop smoking. Researchers say that they have got some of the strongest evidence (证据) that it's never too late to stop smoking.

The study was based on a five-year follow-up of 7178 people over the age of 65 who lived in Boston, New Haven and Washington counties in Iowa. The reporter showed former smokers ran about the same risk (危险) of death from heart disease as those who never smoked. Women who stopped smoking faced about the same cancer-death risk as those who never smoked, but men who gave up smoking still had a 50% higher risk. The men's extra risk of cancer largely disappeared if they had not smoked for more than 20 years.

The discovery does not agree with the widely - known belief that by the time smokers reach old age, their habit has already hurt them, and those who continue to live healthily are probably immune (免疫) to the dangers of cigarettes.

In Europe, men do not usually wear skirts. But the Scottish national clothing for men is a kind of skirt. It is called a kilt. The Scottish like to be different. They are also proud of their country and its history, and they feel that the kilt is part of that history. That's why the men still wear kilts at traditional (传统的) dances and on national holidays. They believe they are wearing the same clothes that Scottish men always used to wear.

That's what they believe. However, kilts are not really so old. Before 1730, Scottish men wore a long shirt and blanket around their shoulders. These clothes got in the way when the men started to work in factories. So, in 1730 a factory owner changed the blanket into a skirt; the kilt. That's how the first kilt was made.

Then, in the late 1700s Scottish soldiers in the British Army began to wear kilts. One reason for this was national sentiment ( = feelings) . The Scottish soldiers wanted to be different from the English soldiers. The British Army probably had a different reason. A Scottish soldier in a kilt was always easy to find! The Scottish soldier fought very hard and became famous. The kilt was part of the fame, and in the early 1800s men all around Scotland began to wear kilts.

These kilts had colorful stripes (条纹) going up and down and across. In the 1700s and early 1800s, the color of the stripes had no special meaning. Men sometimes owned kilts in several different colors. But later the colors became important to the Scottish families. By about 1850, most families had special colors for their kilts. For example, men from the Campbell family had kilts with green, yellow and blue stripes. Scottish people often believe that the colors of the kilts are part of their family history. In fact, each family just chose the color they liked best.

This is not the story you will hear today if you are in Scotland. Most Scottish people still believe that kilts are as old as Scotland and that the colors are as old as the Scottish families. Sometimes feelings are stronger than facts!

1.This text is mainly about ________.

A.soldiers' clothes in Britain
B.the history of Scotland
C.a special kind of skirt
D.Scottish families

2.Which of the following is true according to the passage?

A.The English soldiers were the first to wear kilts.

B.It was hard then to tell the Scottish soldiers from the English ones apart from the clothes.

C.Colors were specially designed in the first kilts.

D.The factory owner made the first kilt from long shirts to make his workers different from others.

3.Scottish soldiers were dressed in kilts partly because of ________.

A.the colors
B.the weather
C.national sentiment
D.the design

4.The colors of the kilts are ________.

[ ]

A.not part of the Scottish family history

B.older than the Scottish family history

C.for the Campbell family only

D.mainly green, yellow and blue

5.From the last paragraph we can infer that ________.

[ ]

A.the European people are full of strong feelings

B.there are no stories about kilts in Scotland today

C.the British like to do things on feelings, not on facts

D.the Scottish prefer to keep their tradition rather than believe the fact

The Changing Role of American Women

In the early 1900s, most Americans lived on farms. Women usually got up long before the sun to milk cow, gather eggs and prepare a big breakfast. During the day, they did a lot of housework. They sometimes worked in the fields with their husbands.

During the next fifty years, however, life in America changed greatly. Most people moved from farms into cities or towns where the husband had a job in an office, store or factory. In the 1940sand 1950s most women continued to work at home, taking care of the house and children, doing the washing and cooking. During the 1960s more and more women began to work outside their homes. By 1980 more than 60% of all American women between the ages of 18 and 54 had jobs. At first, most women worked only if their income (收入) was needed because of the death or illness of their husbands, but later women began to work by choice. As automation (自动化) took over many of the jobs at home and as the husband spent long hours on the work, some women found less fulfillment (成就) in housework. An increase (增加) in the divorce rate (离婚率) also pushed more women into labor force (劳动力). By 1980, 8.5 million American families were headed by women with no husband present (在场的).

Like Chinese women, American women have always worked either on the farms, in their homes or in the workplace. As we enter a new century, American women find their role (作用) in society has greatly improved. Many choices open to them now. Many are entering the professions (职业) and occupying (占据) key positions (关键位置) in politics, business and education, and their number continues to grow.

1.Why did life in America change greatly during the 1950s?

C.Men found jobs in cities, so many families moved into cities.

[ ]

A.Their income was needed to support the family.

B.Their parents moved in with them.

C.They needed more money because they had more children.

D.They could make more money than men.

3.Why did more women get jobs later on?

[ ]

A.They could make more money than men.

B.Housework became less creative and they wanted more fulfillment.

C.Many companies provided day care for their children.

D.Their husbands were ill.

4.In 1980 about how many families were headed by women with no husband present?

Computer people talk a lot about the need for other people to become “computer - literate”.But not all experts (专家) agree that this is a good idea.

One pioneer, in particular, who disagrees, is David Tebbutt, the founder of Computertown UK. Although many people see this as a successful attempt to bring people closer to the computer, David doesn't see it that way. He says that Computertown UK was formed for just the opposite reason, to bring computers to people and make them “people -literate”.

David Tebbutt thinks Computertowns are most successful when tied to a computer club that he insists there is an important difference between the two. The clubs are for people who have some computer knowledge already. This frightens away non-experts, who are happier going to Computertowns where there are computers for them to experiment on, with experts to encourage them and answer any questions they have. The computer experts have to learn not to tell people about computers, but have to be able to answer all questions people ask. People don't have to learn computer terms, but the experts have to explain in plain language. The computers are becoming “people-literate.”

1.Which of the following is David Tebbutt's idea on the relationship between people and computer?

A.Computer learning should be made easier.

Calendars

Many people take for granted the fact that January 1,2000 marks the beginning of a new century for all mankind. However, this day does not have the same meaning everywhere in the world. Where did the date 2000 come from? Around 500 A.D., a leading religious man suggested that all Christians should start counting the date from the birth of Christ. After careful calculations, the year 1 A.D.(Christ's birth)was said to be the 28th year after Augustus became the emperor of Rome. Today, this calculation seems to be incorrect. Historians believe that Christ was actually born four years before this date, but changing the calendar now would only cause confusion around the world because most people are used to the current calendar.

There are several other major calendars used for calculating the date The Jewish calendar calculates the date from the day the earth was created. In 1000 B.C., Jewish scholars set the date the earth began, and according to this calendar, the year2000 A.D. would actually be 5760. The Buddhist calendar begins from the death of Buddha, so the year 2000 A.D. for Christians will be 2544 for Buddhists. Muslims start their calendar from the time when the Prophet Muhammad escaped from Mecca and went to Medina. The Muslim calendar also follows the moon instead of the sun, so the Muslim year is 10 or 11 days shorter than the Christian year. The year 2000 A.D. is really 1420 for Muslims. The official Hindu calendar, which was put into use in the 1950s, begins from the first year that King Kaniska took power in India. When Christians celebrate the year 2000 A.D., it will only be the year 1922 for Hindus.

Not all calendars set the date by historical or religious events. One other system used for calculating the date was created by the astronomer Joseph Scaliger in the1500s. For astronomers, one year is a very short time when looking at the movement of planets and stars. Therefore, Mr. Scaliger suggested using a time period for his calendar that would equal 7,980 years. The dates of the calendar are calculated by dividing one 7,980-year cycle of this calendar into smaller periods. These periods are more convenient for following the movements of the sun and the moon. Mr. Scaliger picked out the starting point of one of these cycles as January 14,713 B.C. In 2000 A.D. this calendar will set the date as 2,451,545.

(2)What marks the beginning of the Jewish calendar?

[ ]

A. the birth of Muhammad

B. the death of Buddha

C. the beginning of the earth

D. the lunar cycle

(3)Why did Mr. Scaliger need to create a new calendar for keeping track of the movement of planets?

[ ]

A. History is very short.

B. Planets are too big.

C. Light travels too fast

D. Years are too short.

(4)The second paragraph is mainly about ________.

[ ]

A. how to measure time

B. many different calendars
