Only a hundred years ago, people seldom traveled far out of their birth place. Books were very expensive and there were few national newspapers and no radio or television. In fact, most people spent their time talking and listening. Only a very small quantity of reading and writing went on and many people were unable to read or write. For this reason, native dialects(方言)grew up and people spoke the way their parents and grandparents spoke. A woman from Cornwall who traveled just as far as London would find herself in a place where people spoke what was almost a different language.
Sometimes it is hard to take in just how much things have changed. You are used to owning books and having them around, to reading magazines and newspapers and to a choice of national television and radio programs. You, and everyone around you, are used to traveling not just in the British Islands but all over the world. Modern science has changed our life and distances have been made shorter. It might have taken that Cornwall woman three days to travel to London. Now it takes less than two hours by air, less than four hours by train and less than six hours by road.
The result of this is that the language we use is becoming more national and the dialects are dying out. Writing, printing and broadcasting have speeded up this change as one dialect has come to be used by more and more people. This is the dialect called standard (标准的) English which was first used outside London in the south and east Midlands.
1.From the information given in the passage we know that a century ago ________.
[ ]
A.people wouldn't like to leave their birth place
B.there were neither books nor newspapers
C.not many people could read and write
D.people learned to read and write from their parents and grandparents
2.If a woman who lived in Comwall a hundred years ago went to London, she would find ________.
[ ]
A.London was far from her birth place
B.London was a strange city
C.London people used a very difficult language
D.she could hardly understand what London people spoke
3.Things have changed so much that people are not used to ________ any more.
[ ]
A.watching TV and listening to the radio
B.reading books and magazines
C.traveling just within the British Islands
D.traveling the world over

Different countries and different people have different manners. We must find out their customs, so that they will not think us ill-mannered. Here are some examples of the things that a well-mannered person does or does not do.
If you visit a Chinese family you should knock at the door first. When the door opens, you'll not move before the host says“Come in, please.”After you enter the room, you wouldn't sit down until the host asks you to take a seat. When a cup of tea is put on a tea-table before you or sent to your hand, you'll say“Thank you”and receive it with your two hands, not one hand, or they'll think you are ill-mannered.
Before entering a house in Japan, it is good manners to take off your shoes. In European countries, even though shoes sometimes become very dirty, this is not done. In a Malay house a guest never finishes the food on the table. He leaves a little to show that he has had enough. In England, a guest always finishes a drink or the food to show that he has enjoyed it. This will make the host, especially the hostess pleased.
1.We must find out what the different manners are in different countries so that ________.
[ ]
A.we won't be thought in poor health
B.they won't think we are ill

Every day millions of letters go from one country to another. Letters mailed in Italy are received in Japan. Letters mailed in Canada are received in Africa. On the letters are many different kinds of stamps, bought in different countries.
The Universal Postal Union helps each letter get to the right place as quickly as possible. It sets up roles about the size and weight of letters, postcards and small packages (包裹). It has rules that all countries must follow about international postal rates(费用).

Sometimes the person who sent the letter could pay only part of the postage. The person receiving the letter had to pay the rest.

Chemists have been studying why people cry. They say the body produces two kinds of tears. One kind cleans out the eye if it gets dirt in it. But when people cry because of their feelings, these tears have poisonous chemicals in them. The body is getting rid of chemicals produced by strong feelings.
In the United States men have heart diseases more than women do. Doctors say heart diseases and some other diseases are related to the pressures(压力)of living and working in a modern society. Is it possible to persuade mankind to live without war? War is an ancient custom which has existed for at least six thousand years. It was always bad and usually foolish. But in the past the human race managed to live with it. Modem cleverness has changed this. Either man will abolish(毁灭) war, or war will abolish man. For the present, it is nuclear (核的) weapons that cause the most serious danger, but bacteriological (细菌的) or chemical weapons may, before long, offer an even greater threat. If we succeed in abolishing nuclear weapons, our work will not be done. It will never be done until we have succeeded in abolishing war. To do this, we need to persuade mankind to look upon international questions in a new way, not as contests of forces, in which the victory goes to the side which is most skillful in killing people, but by arbitration(仲裁) in agreement with agreed principles (规则) of law. It is not easy to change very old mental habits, but this is what must be attempted.
It has become a common place that nuclear war must be avoided. Of course very difficult problems remain in the world, but the spirit in which they are being approached(接近)is a better one than it was some years ago. It has begun to be thought, even by the powerful men who decide whether we shall live or die, that negotiations (谈判) should reach agreements even if both sides do not find these agreements wholly satisfactory. It has begun to be understood that the important conflict(冲突) nowadays is not between different countries, but between man and the atom bomb.
1.This passage implies that war is now ________.
[ ]
2.The underlined phrase“To do this”refers to “________”.
[ ]
3.According to the writer, ________.
[ ]
A.war is the only way to solve international disputes
B.war will be less dangerous because of the improvement of weapons
C.it is possible for pelple to live without war
D.war must be abolished if man wants to survive
4.The last paragraph suggests that ________.
[ ]
A.international agreements can be reached more easily now
B.man begins to realize the danger of nuclear war
C.nuclear war will not take place
D.world opinion welcomes nuclear war

One day an ordinary dog appeared in the ticket office at Campiglia, a busy railroad station on Italy's main line. A ticket agent named Elvio greeted the strange dog in a friendly way, so the dog decided to stay. From that day on, the dog became Elvio's shadow and was named Lampo.
Lampo kept Elvio company(陪伴) inside the ticket office. When the weather was warm, he would enjoy himself in the sun on the train platform. When the time came for Elvio to return home on the train at night, Lampo ran after the train for a long way and then sadly gave up and went back to the station.
One night as Elvio was riding home on the train, he noticed that Lampo was lying at his feet. Afraid that the conductor would see the dog on the train and shout at him, Elvio pushed lampo under a seat. Luckily, the conductor did not notice the dog. Lampo came home with Elvio and met his family. Then, after a short visit, Lampo boarded the last train and went back to the station. Lampo quickly learned all of the train schedules(时刻表). After many experiments, they made two men go up in a balloon full of hot air. A great crowd of people watched. The balloon rose to a height (高度) of 900 metres. The wind blew it along for nine kilometers. Then it came gently back to earth. For the first time man traveled through the air!
