Most animals have little connection with animals of a different kind, unless they hunt them for food. Sometimes, however, two kinds of animals come together in a partnership(伙伴关系) which does good to both of them. You may have noticed some birds sitting on the backs of sheep. This is not because they want a ride, but because they find easy food in the parasites (寄生虫) on sheep. The sheep allow the birds to do so because they remove the cause of discomfort. So although they can manage without each other, they do better together.

Sometimes an animal has a plant partner. The relationship develops until the two partners cannot manage without each other. This is so in the corals(珊瑚)of the sea. In their skins they have tiny plants which act as“dustman”, taking some of the waste products from the coral and giving in return oxygen which the animal needs to breathe. If the plants are killed, or are even prevented from light so that they cannot live normally, the corals will die.

1.Some birds like to sit on a sheep because ________.

[ ]

3.It can be learnt from the text that the coral depends on the plant for ________.

[ ]

A.comfort
B.light
C.food
D.oxygen

4.What does the second paragraph mainly discuss?

[ ]

A.Some animals and plants depend on each other for existence.

B.Some animals and plants develop their relationship easily.

C.Some plants depend on each other for food.

D.Some animals live better together.

The elephant is the biggest four-legged animal in the world. It is also, perhaps, the gentlest; but not always!

Elephants are like us in some ways. They live for a long timefifty or sixty years. They can remember things very well. They never forget great sadness or great happiness. A female elephant dies, her daughters and her grand-daughters are sad for many months. They stay with the dead body. Then they carry a bit of it away with them. They never forget a dear friend.

Elephants are like us, but they are also different. They live in families, families of females. There will be a few young malesa few“baby boys.”But the females will soon send them away. An elephant family keeps only its daughters, mothers, grandmothers and its great-grand-mothers.

The females stay together for fifty, sixty…a hundred years. The older animals look after the younger ones. The mothers teach their daughters and set a good example.

And what happens to male elephants? Well, the young males stay with their mothers for a time. Then they must leave the family. The females just send them away. A bull(雄性) elephant does not often have a friend. He lives apart, away from the family, and often away from other bulls.

Sometimes the females call a bull. He can visit them then, and stay for a time. But soon his“wives”and sisters send him away again. The females have a very happy family life. What do the bulls think about it? We don't know.

1.Elephants are very sad when ________.

[ ]

B.a bull leaves their family

C.they are attacked by men

D.they lose a female in the family

2.When a female elephant dies, the others ________.

Many experiments have been done to see what happens to people if they aren't allowed to naturally follow the sleep cycle (循环). In the experiments people are functional(起作用) normally if they aren't allowed to dream. They are woken as soon as they enter the active part of the sleep cycle where dreaming takes place. They are tested to decide how this has effects on them.

In many experiments, the people being tested went to sleep. As soon as their eyes began to move, a sign that dreaming had begun, they were awakened(唤醒). Two important changes took place in people. They became very nervous and easily to get angry if they weren't allowed to dream. And, the more often they were awakened, the more often they tried to dream. In other words, the length of the passive(消极的) part of the sleep cycle became shorter and shorter. The researchers came to the conclusion that dreaming was caused by some chemical in the brain and that the brain produced the chemical for dreaming to take place. The fact that people tried to dream more if they weren't allowed to dream naturally led us to believe that we need to dream in order to be in balance.

1.Scientists have done many experiments to see ________.

[ ]

A.whether or not people dream in their sleep

B.how many dreams a person has in his or her sleep

C.whether people can act normally if they aren't allowed to dream in their sleep
