People in different countries use different ways to express themselves. We are taught “How are you? I’m fine, thank you. And you?” And nearly every student can remember it very well. But in the US, people say “how are you?” instead of “And you?” Because people want to be polite. The problem is that this is still too formal. People say “Hi!  How is it going?” or “Hey!  What’s up?” or “Never better.” Or “Hello! How are you doing?”, and so on. Between close friends, people often answer “Busy,” or “Tired”. Or “Barely.” That means they are telling you the truth.

However, Americans use “so-so” just when they talk about food, drink, or and activity or party instead of using it in other ways. For example “What about the food and drinks?” “It was just so-so.” This cannot be used to describe personal(个人的)things. If so, “Not bad” is often sued.

When close friends thank you for your help, they say “Thanks.” Or “Thanks a lot.” Or “I appreciate it.” Or “That’s very kind of you.” And then what can we answer? We can say “All right.” or “Any time.” Or “Don’t mention it.” or My pleasure.” or “Sure(应该的).”

So when we communicate(交流)with each other, we’d better speak idiomatic(地道的)English so that we can make our conversation easier.

The polite English man at table holds and keeps his knife in his right hand, his fork in his left, cuts his meat and presses(压) his vegetables into his fork. The polite American first cuts up all his meat, then places his knife down of the right of his plate, takes his fork in his right hand and with his fork lifts the food to the mouth. He will have coffee half way through his dinner before the pudding. The Englishman drinks his coffee after the dinner. And, of course, Americans are coffee-drinkers rather than tea-drinkers. The Englishman would be surprised at the American’s idea of how tea should be made.

The popular way to make tea is to take a cup or a pot of hot water and drop into it a cotton bag with tee leaves in it. For a change they will sometimes put a pan of water on the electric stove(炉)and, just as the water gets warm, throw in some tea and then pour(倒)the mixture into a tea pot, pour it from there into a cup(or a glass) and drink it without turning a hair.
