Manners Expected in the United StatesFollowing are opinions on the manner that people in the United States usually expect in various social situations.
Introductions and Conversation. Men usually shake hands with each other when they meet for the first time, but shake hands with women only if the woman extends(伸出)her hand first. Women do not usually shake hands with each other.
After the first meeting, shaking hands is unusual. However, if someone offers his or her hand by chance, one is expected to shake it. In general, people in the United States avoid(避免)physical touch with each other, since physical touch frequently(经常)suggests sexual attraction or attack.
Although, has been noted, first names are used more frequently in the United States than elsewhere, this practice is governed by certain generally accepted rules of etiquette(礼仪). Thus, while it is proper for the foreign student to address people of about his or her own age and status(身份)by their first name, the student would be expected to use“Mr. ”, “Mrs. ”, “Miss”or“Ms”and the person's last name in addressing to another person who is clearly older than the student. (On the other hand, the older person will probably address the student by his or her first name from the beginning.)If the other person being addressed has a title such as“Ambassador”or“Dean”, the student should use that title and the last name. For example, Senator Edward Kennedy would be addressed as“Senator Kennedy”. Any faculty(全教员)member can be addressed as“Professor”, regardless of whether he or she holds the rank(头衔)of Assistant(辅助的)Professor, Associate(副的)Professor, or full Professor. Equally acceptable are“Mr. ”, “Mrs. ”, etc.

Harrison Ford(哈里森·福特)Harrison Ford was born on July l3, 1942, in Chicago, to an Irish Catholic(天主教的)father and a Russian Jewish mother.
Although young Ford had no direction(方向)in life, not to mention no motivation(动力)to learn, he continued in his studies and attended Ripon College, in Wisconsin. A below average student, Ford took an acting class to try raising his grade point average. This didn't help since Ford was kicked out of(开除)Ripon just weeks before graduation—but the acting classes did serve another purpose—they gave Ford a glimmer(微光)of direction in his life.
Ford left for Los Angeles with the hopes of pursuing(从事)an acting career. Once in LA, Ford received bit parts in television series, but this was not keeping him busy nor was it paying the bills. He took a job as a carpenter with the task of building a recording studio. Producers and directors told Ford that he did not have what it takes to be all actor, but he did have an ability for carpentry and taught himself about it with the help of a library book he borrowed.
And then he began the relationship with director George Lucas. Ford was offered a role in the film American Graffiti《美国画师》, but gave it up when he learned his salary was not half as big as what he was earning as a carpenter. When he was offered a slight pay raise, he finally accepted the role.
This was the beginning of a beautiful friendship, which led to his historical role as Han Solo in Star Wars《星球大战》. After his work in Star Wars, Ford performed in another star-turning role, this time for directors Steven Spielberg and George Lucas, in the first installment(分本演出)of the Indiana Jones series(系列影片), Raiders of the Lost Ark《夺宝奇兵》.
With dramatic(生动的)roles in films such as Presumed Innocent《推定无罪》, Patriot Games《爱国者游戏》, The Fugitive《逃亡者》, Clear and Present Danger《迫在眉睫》, The Devil's Own《与魔鬼同行》, and Air Force One《空军一号》(to name just a few), it's no wonder Ford is one of the most respected actors of his time.
Although 7 of Ford's films are among the top grossing films(最高票房收入)of all time, he has never actually won an Academy Award. He was recognized for his work in the 1985 drama Witness《目击者》with a Best Actor Oscar nomination(提名)and has received a lot of other prestigious(有声望的)awards.
Respected as a sex symbol(象征)by women worldwide, the person behind the most beloved heroes in film's history is regarded as an excellent actor by both sexes. He earns a salary of at least $ 20 million per movie.

Tired Pupils Get Longer in BedBeijing's 1.6 million primary and middle school children will be allowed to go to school half an hour later than usual, following a newly issued regulation(法令)on education timetables, according to officials from the Beijing Education commission(北京教委).
The new regulation urges(迫切要求)primary and middle schools across the city to shift their existing timetables by half an hour to make schoolchildren get enough sleep. Too long studying and too much homework have put a heavy burden on schoolchildren, reducing their sleep and playtime, officials with the commission said.
The new regulation says that primary schoolchildren should start school no earlier than 7∶50 in the morning and middle school pupils not before 7∶30. According to the new rule the amount of time that primary school pupils should study in school should be under six hours a day, while middle schools pupils should study no more than eight hours. The rule also orders schools to reduce homework.
The easing(减轻)of the burden on primary and middle schoolchildren has been a hot topic in local and national legislature(立法机关)and advisory bodies over the years. Speaking at a meeting of the Fourth Session of the National Committee of the Ninth People's Political Consultative Conference this week, Fang Tingyu, a delegate(代表)from Beijing said his granddaughter had to get up at 5∶30 am to go to school, and a lot of homework meant she didn't get to bed until very late at night.
A number of delegates from other cities across the country said that although national education departments have set 8∶00 am as the proper school opening time, many schools across the country have ordered children to come in as early as 7∶00 am in order to gain higher scores.

Baghdad Seeking Support of Arabian WorldBAGHDAD(Reuters)—Iraq(伊拉克)asked Arabs on Monday to seek martyrdom(殉难;牺牲)by attacking U.S. forces in Kuwait(科威特), saying the Americans were preparing to occupy(占领)Iraq.
“We in Iraq and in the entire(Arab)nation believe that every faithful(虔诚的)Arab has the right, duty, and the honor to deal with these forces in Kuwait, ”a spokesman was replying to the comments by al-Attiya, Secretary-General of the Gulf Cooperation Council(GCC,海湾合作委员会), in which he turned down an apology by President Saddam Hussein(萨达姆·侯塞因)to the Kuwaiti people for the 1990 invasion(入侵).
Saddam apologized Saturday for his 1990-1991 invasion of the country, but scolded Kuwait rulers for conspiring(同谋;搞阴谋)with Washington against the Baghdad(巴格达)government.
Kuwait turned down the apology and said Saddam's message amounted to“incitement(煽动)for terrorism(恐怖主义)”.
The Iraq spokesman said, “Does Attiya not know that the U.S. forces occupy Kuwait, start from there to destroy the Iraq and kill the Iraqis, and that the U.S. army forces plan to occupy Iraq?”

UAE Information Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Zaid al-Nahayan said Saddam's speech had cost Baghdad what support it had left in the Arab world.
“I believe the speech cost the Iraq leadership any pity it had left and further proved the weakness of Iraq's political and media credibility(可靠性;确实性)at a time when Iraq needs to try its best to get rid of the threat of a face-off(对峙), ”Sheikh Abdullah told the official Kuwait News Agency.
Iraq invaded Kuwait on Aug. 2, 1990.U.S.-led united forces drove the Iraq army from the oil-rich state in February, 1991.
Thousands of U.S. troops have been sent to Kuwait since the 1991 Gulf War. However, these forces have been attacked several times in recent weeks. At least one U.S. soldier has died.
