The uses of computersNot very long, the computer was a strange machine. Not many people understood it. Not many people said yes to it. Today much of that is changing. The first computer system(系统)was introduced for use in business in the mid-1950s. Since then, the number of computer systems used in business, government offices, and institutions has grown rapidly. In 1975, about 250,000 systems were in use in the United States. This is growing by tens of thousands every year.
The electric computer is an important factor(因素)in our lives. Each year we use computer more and more to help us to collect data(数据)and to provide us with information. At one time people thought computers were only useful to banks, department stores, and governments. But today the rapidly increasing number of computers are used for many other purposes. Have you ever stopped to think how you are affected(影响)by a computer? The clothes you wear were probably made with the help of a computer. The newspaper you read could have been edited(编辑)and typed by a computer. Even radio programmes are often prepared by computers.
Computers today are playing important roles(作用)in education, transportation(交通)and medicine. They are used to predict(预报)the weather, to examine the ocean, and to develop defense systems. They are being used by businesses, governments, and institutions. There is no reason to think that their uses will become a greater part of our lives.
The influence(影响)of the computer is great. The list of its uses could go on and on. Computers now affect millions of people in countless(无数的)ways every day.

A Tour City—PompeiiEvery year thousands of tourists visit Pompeii(庞贝,意大利那不勒斯附近一座古城), Italy. They see the sights that Pompeii is famous for—its stadium(运动场)and theatres, its shops and restaurants. The tourists do not, however, see Pompeii's people. They do not see them because Pompeii has no people. No one has lived in Pompeii for almost 2000 years.
Once, Pompeii was a busy city of 22,000 people. It lay at the foot of Mount Vesuvius(维苏威火山), a grass-covered volcano(火山). Mount Vesuvius had not erupted(爆发)for centuries, so the people of Pompeii felt safe. But they were not.
In August of AD 79, Mount Vesuvius erupted. The entire top of the mountain exploded, and a huge black cloud rose into the air. Soon stones and hot ash began to fall on Pompeii. When the eruption ended two days later, Pompeii was buried(埋葬)under 20 feet of stones and ashes. Almost all of its people were dead.
For centuries, Pompeii lay buried under stone and ash. Then, in the year 1861, an Italian scientist named Ginseppe began to uncover(发现)Pompeii. Slowly, carefully, Ginseppe and his men dug. The city looked almost the same as it had looked in AD 79. There were streets and fountains, houses and shops. There was a stadium with 20,000 seats. Perhaps the most important of all, there were everyday objects, which tell us a great deal about the people who lived in Pompeii. Many glasses and jars had some dark blue colour in the bottom, so we know that the people of Pompeii liked wine. They liked bread, too; metal bread pans were in even bakery(面包房). In one bakery there were 81 round, flat loaves of bread—a type of bread that is still sold in Italy today. Tiny boxes filled with a dark, shiny powder tell us that women liked to wear eye-makeup(眼部化妆品).
Ginseppe has died, but his work continues. One-fourth has not been uncovered yet. Scientists are still digging, still making discoveries that draw the tourists to Pompeii.
1.Why do large numbers of people come to Pompeii each year?
[ ]
2.Why had so many Pompeiians remained by volcanic Mount Vesuvius?
[ ]
A.The city nearby offered all kinds of fun.
B.The area produced the finest wine in Italy.
C.Few people expected the volcano to erupt again.
D.The mountain was beautiful and covered with grass.
3.Why did the city uncovered look almost the same as it had looked in AD 79?
[ ]
A.Because Ginseppe and his men dug it slowly and carefully.
B.Because the city was buried alive and remained untouched.
C.Because scientists successfully rebuilt the city with everyday objects.
D.Because nobody had lived in the city ever since the volcano erupted.
4.What's the meaning of the underlined word“exploded”in the third paragraph?
[ ]
5.What do we know about the Pompeiians who lived 2000 years ago?
[ ]
A.They lived more or less the same as Italians now do.
B.They liked women wearing all kinds of makeup.
C.They enjoyed a lazy life with drinking and eating.
D.They went back to Pompeii after the eruption in AD 79.

Without proper planning, tourism can cause problems. For example, too many tourists can crowd public places that are also enjoyed by the inhabitants(居民)of a country. If tourists create(引起)too much traffic, the inhabitants become angry and unhappy. They begin to dislike tourists and to treat them impolitely. The temperature of your body should be always just the same, no matter the weather is hot or cold. That is why the doctor uses his thermometer(温度计)when you are sick. When you are well. you temperature is ninety-eight and six tenths degrees. If he finds it higher than that, it is a sure sign that something is wrong.
The body keeps the same temperature all the time, because it balances the heat it produces and it gives off. It is always burning up food and producing heat. It call produce heat faster when it needs to or give off heat faster when it becomes too warm. Let's see how this happens.
The heat of your body is given off chiefly through the skin. When you are cold, your skin is tight and shows“goose flesh”. When you get chilly every cold, you must dance around to keep warm or else you will shiver(颤抖). Then your muscles begin to work, burn up fuel(燃料), and produce more heat. It is not pleasant to shiver, so you usually prefer warming up by exercise, or put on more clothes to keep heat in.
When you are warm, the skin is loose and soft. It is so supplied with blood that heat is given off rapidly. If you get too warm, you begin to sweat, and more body heat is used in evaporating(蒸发)the moisture(潮湿)from your skin. You wear less clothing, too, in warm weather or warm room, so that warm can be given off freely. You feel less like exercising because your body is warm already, and the extra heat produced by exercise makes you uncomfortable.
You can see from this why you feel differently in different kinds of weather. In summer, when it is warm, you feel tired and lazy. You do not care to work or play, but enjoy lying and doing nothing. When you get out of doors in winter, the cold air makes you feel lively. You want to run and play.

[ ]

Soccer is played by millions of people all over the world, but there have only been a few players who were truly great. How did these players get that way—was it through training and practice, or are great players“born, not made”? First, these players came from places that have had famous stars in the past—players that a young boy can look up to and try to imitate(模仿). In the history of soccer, only six countries have ever won the world Cup—three from South America and three from western Europe. There has never been a great national team—or a really great player—from North America or from Asia. Second, these players have all had years of practice in the game. Alfredo Di Stefano was the son of a soccer player, as was Pele. Most players begin playing the game at the age of three or four.
Finally, many great players come from the same kind of neighborhood—a poor, crowded area where a boy's dream is not to be a doctor, lawyer, or businessman, but to become a rich, famous athlete or entertainer(表演者). For example, Liverpool, which produced the Beatles, had one of the best English soccer teams in recent years. Pele practiced in the street with a “ball”made of rags. And George Best learned the skills that made him famous by bouncing(使……跳回)the ball off a wall in the slums(贫民区)of Belfast.
All great players have a lot in common, but that doesn't explain why they are great. Hundreds of boys played in those Brazilian streets, but only one became Pele. The greatest players are born with some unique(独特的)quality that makes them different from all the others.
1.According to the writer, which of the following statements is true?
[ ]
A.Soccer is popular all over the world, but truly great players are rare.
B.Millions of people all over the world are playing soccer, but only six countries have ever had famous stars.
C.Soccer is played by millions of people all over the world, but only six countries from South America and western Europe have ever had great national teams.
D.All over the world soccer is one of the most popular games, but it seems least popular in North America or Asia.
2.Liverpool and Brazilian streets are two geographic terms used to illustrate ________.
[ ]
A.where soccer players get their way
B.how neighborhood affects a soccer player's success
C.why they can produce the best soccer teams
D.what a poor, crowded area will provide a future soccer player with
3.In the last paragraph the statement“…but only one became Pele”indicates that ________.
[ ]
A.Pele is the greatest soccer player.
B.the greatest players are born with some unique quality.
C.Pele's birthplace sets him apart from all the others.
D.the success of a soccer player has everything to do with the family background.
4.To get the way for a great player, a series of factors are directly mentioned, except ________.
