Finders, Keepers?I worked for a short time as a cashier(出纳员)at a restaurant a few months ago. I also helped clear off the tables when it was especially busy. One night, just before Christmas, I found a large black wallet on the floor near one of the tables. I guess I should have checked it to find out who was the owner, but I was busy at the time. Also, I imagined that if the wallet contained anything valuable, the owner would be back. Sure enough, an hour later a man came up to the counter(柜台)and asked if anyone had found a wallet. I asked him to describe the lost wallet, and after he described it exactly, I gave him the wallet. He expressed his sincere thanks when I handed it to him. He asked me if I had opened it, and when I told him“No”, He opened it right away and showed that it contained nearly $ 800 in cash(现金). I gasped(叹息)as he took out a twenty-dollar bill and handed it to me. “A reward for your honesty, ”he said and then turned and walked away.
Thinking about it later, I began wondering whether I would have been so honest if I had known what was in the wallet! I think that if there had been no way to find the owner and no one had returned to claim(认领)it, I might have kept it. TrumpetToday's trumpet(喇叭)is one of the word's oldest instruments. It's the result of many centuries of development. Although it looks nothing like its ancestors(祖先), there are many similarities. All trumpets are hollow tubes(管). They are all blown. And they all use the player's lips to produce the basic sound.
The trumpet developed as players and makers worked to improve its design, size, shape, material. and method of construction. They wanted to create an instrument that would produce a beautiful and attractive tone, enable the performer to play all the notes of the scale, extend the range(范畴)higher and lower, make it possible to play more difficult music and, in general, be easier to play well. The remarkable(出众的)way in which the modern trumpet achieves these goals is a measure of the success of all those who struggled to perfect this glorious(光荣的)instrument.
The trumpet is actually the leading member of an entire family of related instruments. There are trumpets of several different sizes, and in several different keys. There are cornets(短号), bugles(军号), and a number of others that are all similar to the trumpet in the way they are made and played.
The trumpet family is much more than a group of related instruments that can stir(搅动)one with their sound, or narrow tubes of metal capable of(有潜能的)producing a variety of musical sounds. It is a link to many different periods of history and to people of many cultures. From the use of trumpets in ancient religious ceremonies(宗教大典)to the part they play in modern rock bands, the trumpet family of instruments has much to tell about civilization(文明)and its development.

Damage Caused toHearing by Sounds
We now know that the sounds of every city are loud enough to cause great damage to the citizens' hearing—in the United State, one person out of twenty has got some hearing loss. And all over the world the situation is getting worse all the time since increases with the population.
It has also increased greatly in the 20th century with the development of machines. Every human being, no matter what he is doing, gives off body heat. The usual problem is how to deal with it. But the designers of the Johnstown campus(校园)of the University of Pittsburgh set themselves the opposite problem—how to collect body heat. They have designed a collection system which uses not only body heat, but the heat given off by such objects as light bulbs(灯泡)and fridges as well. The system works so well that no commonly used fuel is needed to make the campus's six buildings comfortable.
Some parts of most modern buildings theatres and offices as well as classrooms are more than amply(充分地)heated by people and lights and they sometimes must be air-conditioned even in winter. The technique of saving heat and redistributing(再分配)it is called“heat recovery”. A few modern buildings recover heat, but the University's system is the first to recover heat from some buildings and reuse it in others.
Along the way Pitt has learned a great deal about some of its heat producers. The harder a student studies, the more heat his body gives off. Male student send out more heat than female students, and the larger the student is, the more heat he produces. It can be concluded(总结)that the hottest prospect for the Johnstown campus would be a hard-working, over-weight male genius(天才).
1.The heat in the heating system of the Johnstown campus is supplied ________ ________.
[ ]
A.by human bodies.
B.by both human bodies and other heat-giving objects
C.by both human bodies and commonly used fuel
D.by human bodies, other heat-giving objects and commonly used fuel
2.The technique of heat recovery is used to ________.
[ ]
A.find out the source of heat
B.produce a special form of air conditioning
C.provide the heat for the hot water system
D.collect and reuse heat
3.________ would produce the least amount of heat.
[ ]
A.A fat female who studies hard
B.A thin female who does not study hard
C.A fat male who does not study hard
D.A thin male who studies hard
4.The underlined part“hottest prospect”refers to ________.
[ ]
A.the person who produces most heat
B.the person who suffers most from heat
C.the person who takes in most heat
D.the person who stands most heat
5.A good title for this passage would be ________.
[ ]
A.A New Heat Recovery System in Pitt
B.Modern Building's Heat System
C.A New Technique in Heating System
D.Recovery of Body's Heat

RecyclingIncreased population increases the need for natural resources and also increases waste products. Making a new useful product out of a waste product decreases(reduces)our need for natural resources. Recycling means using something over again after it has been used once.
Have you ever seen a piece of recycled paper? About one third of all the paper products made each year are made from waste paper. For example, recycled paper is usually used to make paper sacks. Recycling paper, such as newspapers, reduces the number of trees that must be cut each year to make new paper.
Each person wastes a lot of solid(固体的)waste. In the United States, the average(平均)is eight kilograms of waste per person each day. Most of the waste is rubbish. Finding places to dispose(处理)of solid waste is a major problem.
In many cities solid wastes are collected and the rubbish is burned in incinerator plants(焚化场). Air pollution control devices(设备)are used to prevent pollution. Heat produced in the burning may be used to produce electricity. Waste that is not burned is taken to a dump(垃圾堆). One kind of dump for the disposal of solid wastes is a sanitary landfill(废渣处理池). This method involves(包含)burying the wastes and bulldozing(平整)the soil over them. Parks, baseball fields, airports, and other developments may be built on completely filled landfills.
Recycling solid wastes decreases our need for methods of disposal. The metal in broken cars can be recycled and made into new steel. Worn-out rubber tires can be turned into new ones and used again. Plastics and other rubber products can be recycled. Metal cans and glass bottles can also be recycled. Increased recycling can help meet the increased demand for natural resources.
By recycling resources, people imitate(模仿)nature. Elements(元素)important to life are naturally recycled. Nothing lasts forever. Wood decays(腐烂), iron rusts(生锈), and concrete(混凝土)is worn away by wind and rain. All natural resources used by people finally go back into the air, water, and earth.
1.What is the main cause of the increased waste, according to the passage?
[ ]
A.Increased size of cities.
B.Development of the paper-making industry.
C.Increased population.
D.Being short of recycling methods.
2.According to the passage recycling paper is important because ________.
[ ]
A.better paper sacks can be made out of waste paper
B.the prices of new paper are very high
C.trees are no longer available(可获得的)in the developed countries
D.more trees on earth can be saved
3.A big problem of solid waste disposal is that ________.
[ ]
A.solid wastes are poisonous
B.it is difficult to find places to dispose of solid wastes
C.the disposal process is too backward
D.we don't have enough manpower to dispose of solid wastes
4.Which of the following can NOT be called recycling?
[ ]
A.Making new paper from used paper.
B.Using worn-out rubber tires to make new ones.
C.Burying metal cans and glass bottles.
D.Producing new steel from metal in broken cars
5.What is the writer's attitude towards recycling?
[ ]
A.The writer thinks that recycling is necessary and important.
B.The writer thinks it is no use recycling.
C.The writer doubts whether recycling is useful to people.
D.The writer thinks that it is a waste of time and money recycling.

Jakarta(雅加达)—About 20 bombs exploded outside churches in Jakarta and five other Indonesian(印度尼西亚)cities and towns, killing at least 14 people and injuring 47, said Nations Police Chief Gen Suroyo Bimantoro on Sunday.
Sunday's attacks(袭击)follow a rise in Muslim extremism(穆斯林极端主义)throughout the country. The heaviest violence(暴力事件)has been in the Maluku islands in Indonesia's east, where about 5,000 people of both Christian and Muslim beliefs have been killed over the past two years. Indonesia is the world's largest Muslim country with 90 percent of its 210 million people, followers of Islam.
Christians(基督教徒)make up(占)less than 10 percent of Indonesia's 210 million. Many are from the Chinese minority, which had been attacked by Muslim groups during the past civil unrest.
Sunday's bombings were the latest in a series to rock the capital. The worst this year came in September, when a car bomb and the following fire killed 15 people in a parking lot at Jakarta's Stock Exchange(股票交易市场). In August, two people were killed when a car bomb blew up outside the Philippine ambassador's(大使)home.
The police made arrests(逮捕)after those attacks and several smaller explosions, but have brought no formal charges. Most of the arrested have been set free.
