阅读下面短文,从每小题所给的四个选项中,选出一个最佳答案。
When I asked my daughter which item she would keep; the phone, the car, the cooker, the computer, the TV, or her boyfriend, she said “the phone”. Personally, I could do without the phone entirely, which makes me unusual, because the telephone is changing our lives more than any other piece of technology.
Point 1 The telephone creates the need to communicate, in the same way that more roads create more traffic. My daughter comes home from school at 4:00 pm and then spends an hour on the phone talking to the very people she has been at school with all day. If the phone did not exist, would she have anything to talk about?
Point 2 The mobile phone means that we are never alone. “The mobile saved my life , ” says Crystal Johnstone. She had an accident in her Volvo on the A45 between Otley and Skipton. Trapped inside , she managed to make the call that brought the ambulance (救护车) to her rescue.
Point 3 The mobile removes our secrets. It allows marketing manager of Haba Deutsch , Carl Nicolaisen, to ring his sales staff all round the world at any time of day to ask where they are, where they are going, any how their last meeting went.
Point 4 The telephone separates us. Antonella Bramante in Rome says , “ We worked in separate offices but I could see him through the window. It was easy to get his number. We were so near-but we didn’t meet for the first two weeks!”
Point 5 The telephone allows us to reach out beyond our own lives. Today we can talk to several complete strangers simultaneously (同时地) on chat lines (at least my daughter does. I wouldn’t know what to talk about). We can talk across the world. We can even talk to astronauts (if you know any) while they’re space-walking. And, with the phone line hooked up to the computer, we can use the Internet, the biggest library on the Earth.
1.What does the writer mean by saying “The telephone creates the need to communicate”?

After giving a talk at a high school, I was asked to pay a visit to a special student. An illness had kept the boy home, but he had expressed an interest in meeting me, and it would mean a great deal to him. I agreed.
During the nine-mile drive to his home, I found out something about Matthew. He had mus-cular dystrophy (肌肉萎缩症) , When he was born, the doctor told his parents that he would not live to see five, then they were told he would not make it to ten. Now he was thirteen. He wanted to meet me because I was a gold-medal power lifter, and I knew about overcoming obstacles and going for my dream.
I spent over an hour talking to Matthew. Never once did he complain or ask, “Why me?” He spoke about winning and succeeding and going for his dreams. Obviously, he knew what he was talking about. He didn’t mention that his classmates had made fun of him because he was differ-ent. He just talked about his hopes for the future, and how one day he wanted to lift weight with me.
When we finished talking, I went to my briefcase and pulled out the first gold medal I won and put it around his neck. I told him he was more of a winner and knew more about success and over-coming obstacles than I ever would. He looked at it for a moment, then took it off and handed it back to me. He said, “You are a champion. You earned that medal. Someday when I get to the Olympics and win my own medal, I will show it to you. ”
Last summer I received a letter from Matthew’s parents telling me that Matthew had passed away. They wanted me to have a letter he had written to me a few days before
Dear Rick ,
My mom said I should send you a thank-you letter for the picture you sent me. 1 also want to let you know that the doctors tell me that 1 don ‘t have long to live anymore. But I still smile as much as 1 can.
I told you someday 1 was going to the Olympics and win a gold medal. But I know now I will never get to do that. But I know 1 ‘m a champion , and God knows that too. When I get to Heaven , God will give me my medal and when you get there , I will show it to you. Thank you for loving me.
Your friend ,
Matthew

阅读下面三个段落,根据其内容,从A,B,C,D中找出与每个段落相应的首句。
A.Nevertheless, good breeding (饲养) is just the beginning.
B.Blind people usually spend up to four tough weeks learning how to work safely with their new guides.
C.Training has become more sophisticated (复杂的) over the years.
D.The first guide dogs for the blind were trained in Germany in 1916, to lead blinded ex-semice-men.
① Guide dog training was further developed in the US and now schools which train such dogs exist in several countries. Guide dog training started in Britain in 1931 and there are around 4, 000 guide dogs in Britain which help their blind and partially-sighted owners.
② This is just as well as there used to be an eighty percent failure rate among potential guide dogs in the early days. However, we need to realize that a guide dog is more than the product of just special training. Nowadays a breeding programme ensures the suitability of the supply of dogs which have the right physical and temperamental qualities. A good guide dog needs sensitivity, adaptability, good voice response, some initiative and willingness to please. Crosses between Labradors and golden retrievers account for around half the dogs. Pure Labradors account for roughly a third while German shepherds and pure golden retrievers each contribute ten percent.
③ Most people are unaware of the long training process. When they are about six weeks old the puppies go to live with volunteer families and are taught to be clean and obey the basic com-mands like “sit” , “down” and “come”. They visit busy places and learn to conquer their fear of loud noises, mad works and busy crowds, and to control their natural liveliness. By the end of heir nine or ten-month stay they have acquired the three Cs-confidence, concentration and calmness-and are ready to start their training at one of the seven centers.

“Ladies and gentlemen, we got him!”
With those words, Paul Bremer, the US's top administrator (行政官员) in Iraq, told the world that Saddam Hussein had been caught.
Saddam was found last Saturday night hiding in a hole on the land of his former cook. He had a gun with him when he was found by US soldiers, but did not use it. He also had US $ 750, 000.“He was quite cooperative (合作的). Not one shot was fired, ” said Richardo Sanches , the US’s top army official in Iraq.
Saddam Hussein was the leader of Iraq from 1979 to April 2003.In 1990, he went to warwith Kuwait, one of Iraq’s neighbors. Iraq’s army killed many Kurds (库尔得人) living there. The US and other countries went to war with Iraq in 1991 to get the Iraq army out of Kuwait. The war was won quickly by the American-led army. But Saddam was left to lead Iraq.
In 2003, America said Iraq had weapons of mass destruction (大规模杀伤性武器) and decided to go to war with Saddam again.
The US-led army occupied (占领) Iraq in April. But they could not find Saddam. Saddam had around 30 hiding places in the country and he moved among them every four hours. The US-led army only found him after being told where he was by one of his former workers.
America and Britain now want to put Saddam on trial for “war crimes” , such as killing Kurds in the 1990s.
George W. Bush, the US President, wants Saddam to “ pay the ultimate penalty (终极惩罚)”for such crimes. By that, he means the death penalty. The UN and European countries, though, do not want Saddam to be put to death.

There was one shop in the town of Mufulira which was widely known for its racial discrimination. It was a drugstore. While Europeans were served at the counter, a long line of Africans queued at the window and often not only were kept waiting but were rudely treated by the shop assistants. One day I was determined to make a public protest (抗议) against this kind of thing, and many of the schoolboys in my class followed me to the store.
I simply went into the shop and asked the manager politely for some medicine. As soon as he saw me standing in the place where only European customers were allowed to stand he shouted at me in a bastard (AA) language which is only used by a boss when speaking to his servants. I stood at the counter and politely requested in proper English that I should be served. The manager became angry and said, “Even if you stand there till Christmas, I will never serve you.”
I went to the District Commissioner's office. Fortunately, he was out, for he was one of the old school; however, I saw a young District Officer who was a friend of mine. He was very concerned to hear my story and told me that all I had to do was come to him personally and he would buy my medicine for me. I protested that that was not good enough. I asked him to accompany me back to the store and to make a protest to the manager. This he did, and I well remember him saying to the manager, “Here is Mr. Kaunda who is a responsible member of the Urban Advisory Council, and you treat him like a common servant. ” The manager of the drugstore apologized and said, “If only he had introduced himself and explained who he was, then, of course I should have given him proper service. ”
I had to explain once again that he had missed my point. Why should I have to introduce myself every time I went into a store... any more than I should have to buy my medicine by going to a European friend? I want to prove that any man of any color, whatever his position, should have the right to go into any shop and buy what he wanted. After all, the money which I paid across the counter was exactly the same money as was paid by a European customer.
1.The writer was, at the time of the story,________.
[ ]
A.a European officer
B.an African servant
C.a drugstore assistant
D.a black school teacher
2.The manager of the drugstore shouted at the writer in dirty words because ________.
[ ]
A.he could not speak English in a polite way
B.he thought the writer wouldn’t understand English
C.that was the language he used when speaking to Africans
D.that was the only language he could speak when he was angry
3.In paragraph 3 , the underlined sentence “he was one of the old school” means ________.
[ ]
A.he stuck to those old racial ideas
B.he graduated from an old white school
C.he was in charge of an old black school
D.he was an old official in the government
4.Why didn't the writer wait at the window of the drugstore like other Africans?
[ ]
A.He believed his white friends would help him out.
B.He wanted to fight for equal rights of all black people.
C.He thought he was educated and should be treated differently.
D.He thought, being an important person, he should not be kept waiting.

For a 400-year-old art form, operas (歌剧) had a bad fame:overweight actresses singing the words which are hard to understand in one of those romance languages you were supposed to learn in high school. And with tickets costing as much as $ 145 a performance, opera goers also have a certain appearance in people's mind: rich, well-dressed and old.
But now opera companies around the country are loosening their ties and kicking off their shoes in an attempt to bring the opera to the audience (观众) it needs to keep it alive:the young and not-so-rich.
Opera producers have found that to attract this crowd, they need to make the opera closer to common people. That means no formal suits , old-styled theatre or bank-breaking ticket prices. And because young people don’t or won’t come to the opera, companies are bringing the opera to them, giving performances in such usual places as parks, libraries and public schools.
The Houston Grand Opera’s choice is the public library, where it performs “mobile operas” , shortened versions (剧本) of child-friendly operas. This summer’s production is Hansel & Gretel. By performing smaller versions of large productions, producers are able to make people interested while keeping costs at a reasonable level. The San Francisco Opera, which will be celebrating its 75th anniversary (周年) this year, is staging Cinderella free of charge, keeping costs down by employing students from its Young Artists’Training Program.
1.Which is the main idea of this passage?
[ ]
A.Opera is famous for its long history.
B.Opera is only performed for rich people.
C.Opera companies are trying to keep opera alive.
D.Young people are not interested in opera.
2.The underlined phrase “loosening their ties and kicking off their shoes” means ________.
[ ]
A.breaking up the old rules
B.changing the formal suits
C.making the audience at ease
D.advertising themselves
3.Opera companies prefer to perform short versions because ________.
[ ]
A.it is hard to find long versions
B.short versions are easy to perform
C.they can be performed in public libraries
D.they can make people come to the opera
4.The San Francisco Opera employs student actors in order to________.
[ ]
A.celebrate its 75th anniversary
B.reduce the cost
C.attract young people

LONDON (Reuters) -Organic (有机的) fruit, delivered right to the doorstep. That is what Gabriel Gold prefers, and he is willing to pay for it. If this is not possible, the 26-year-old computer technician will spend the extra money at the supermarket to buy organic food.
“Organic produce is always better, ” Gold said. “The food is free of pesticides (农药) , and you are generally supporting family farms instead of large farms. And more often than not it is locally grown and seasonal, so it is more tasty. ” Gold is one of a growing number of shoppers buying into the organic trend, and supermarkets across Britain are counting on more like him as they grow their organic food business. But how many shoppers really know what they are getting, and why are they willing to pay a higher price for organic produce? Market research shows that Gold and others who buy organic food can generally give clear reasons for their preferences-but their knowledge of organic food is far from complete. For example, small amounts of pesticides can be used on organic products. And about three quarters of organic food in Britain is not local but imported (进口) to meet growing demand. “The demand for organic food is increasing by about one third every year, so it is a very fast-growing market,” said Sue Flocks, a specialist in this line of business.
1.More and more people in Britain are buying organic food because ________.
[ ]
A.they are getting richer
B.they can get the food anywhere
C.they consider the food free of pollution
D.they like home-grown fruit
2.Which of the following statements is true to the facts about most organic produce sold in Britain?

Some people are lucky enough to he born with a good sense of direction and even if they have only visited a place once, they will. be able to find it again years later.
I am one of those unfortunate people who have poor sense of direction and I may have visited a place time after time but I still get lost on my way there. When I was young I was so shy that I never dared ask complete strangers the way and so I used to wander round in circles and hope that by some chance I would get to the spot I was heading for.
I am no longer too shy to ask people for direction, but I often receive replies that puzzle me. Often people do not like to admit that they don’t know their hometown and will insist on telling you the way, even if they do not know it; others, who are anxious to prove that they know their home-town very well, will give you a long list of directions which you can not possibly hope to remember, and still others do not seem to be able to tell between their left and their right and you find in the end that you are going in the opposite direction.
If anyone ever asks me the way to somewhere, I always tell them I am a stranger to the town in order to avoid giving them wrong direction but even this can have embarrassing results.
Once I was on my way to work when I was stopped by a man who asked me if I would direct him the way to the Sunlight Building. I gave my usual reply, but I had not walked on a few steps when I realized that he had asked for directions to my office building. However, at this point, I decided it was too late to turn back and search for him out of the crowd behind me as I was going to meet with someone at the office and I did not want to keep him waiting.
Imagine my embarrassment when my secretary showed in the very man who had asked for directions o my office and his astonishment when he recognized me as the person he had asked.
1.What is the writer going to do when someone asks him for direction?
[ ]
A.He will direct the right way to the person willingly.
B.He will reply as if he were a stranger to the town.
C.He will give the very person long list of direction.
D.He is going to show the man an opposite direction.
2.Why did the writer consider himself to be an unlucky dog?
[ ]
A.Because of his poor sense of direction.
B.Because he always forget the way to home.
C.Because he did not have any friend.
D.Because he used to be too shy to ask the way.
3.How did the visitor feel when he was showed into the very room?

A.He felt strange.
B.He felt embarrassed.
C.He felt very sad.
