Cicadas(蝉) that appear from underground only once every 17-years are making big news in the US. The first signs are little holes in parks and fields. Then, big, red-eyed bugs start crawling(爬) out. Thousands of these black, winged insects cover sidewalks, mailboxes, tree branches, and roofs across certain areas of America.

Many insect lovers are going out to parks to observe what scientists believe to be the largest emergence of an insect group in history. But you don't have to live in the US to study the amazing bugs that inhabit our world. Summer is coming. With it come warm days and many chances to have a look at bugs. These creatures keep our ecosystems(生态系统) running and make up the majority of our planet's population!

Many people use the words “bugs” and “insects” to refer to anything with more than four legs. But an insect actually has six legs, a three-part body, and an exoskeleton, which is a skeleton(骨骼) on the outside of its body. Ants, butterflies and cicadas are all insects.

Insects keep our environment working by recycling garbage and dead plants. They serve as food for animals, and pollinate(授粉) plants. Doctors have even found ways of using them in medical treatments to help sick people.

Tracking down insects to watch can be as simple as going to your local park to look for ants, or as complicated as walking out into the woods to find rare beetles(甲虫) Just look carefully and be patient, and something will turn up.

If you want to do more than just watch, you can collect bugs. Take along a butterfly net to catch flying insects and tweezers(镊子) to pick up bugs. Take clean, empty food jars with small air holes poked(戳) in the lids, so you can keep the bugs for a little while, perhaps overnight.

Great creatures to look out for during summer include beetles, butterflies and dragonflies(蜻蜓).However, creatures to watch but not disturb are spiders(蜘蛛) , bees, wasps(黄蜂) , and centipedes(蜈蚣).All of them may leave a painful bite if you touch them and some bites can be dangerous.

When handling and watching the insects you find, remember: they may look different from us, but they have many of the same feelings, such as fear and pain. Have a look, but no poking or pinching(捏) , please!

Increasingly, over the past ten years, people-especially young people-have become aware of the need to change their eating habits, because much of the food they eat, particularly processed food, is not good for the health. Consequently, there has been a growing interest in natural foods: foods which do not contain additives(添加剂) and which have not been affected by chemical fertilizers widely used in farming today.

Natural foods, for example, are vegetables, fruit and grain which have been grown in soil that is rich in organic matter. In simple terms, this means that the soil has been nourished by unused vegetable matter, which provides it with essential vitamins and minerals. This in itself is a natural process compared with the use of chemicals and fertilizers, the main purpose of which is to increase the amount-but not the quality-of foods grown in commercial farming areas.

Natural foods also include animals which have been allowed to feed and move freely in healthy grassy lands. Compared this with what happens in the mass production of poultry: there are battery farms, for example, where thousands of chickens lived crowded together in one building and are fed on food which is little better than rubbish. Chickens kept in this way are not only tasteless as food; they also produce eggs which lack important vitamins.

There are other aspects of healthy eating which are now receiving increasing attention from experts on diet. It is obvious that nowadays fibre is considered to be an important part of a healthy diet. In white bread, for example, the fibre has been removed. But it is present in unrefined flour and of course in vegetables. It is interesting to note that in countries where the national diet contains large quantities of unrefined flour and vegetables, certain diseases are comparatively rare. Therefore emphasis is placed on the eating of wholemeal bread and more vegetables by modern experts on “healthy eating”.

1.What would be the best title for the text?

[ ]

A.Natural Foods.
B.Eating Habits.
C.Healthy Eating.
D.Food Production.

2.It becomes clear from the text that people are getting interested in natural foods because ________.

[ ]

A.processed food are tasteless and unhealthy

B.using chemical on foods has polluted the soil

C.chickens are fed with rubbish in some farms

D.addictives contained in foods are harmful

3.Which of the following statements is best supported by the last paragraph?

[ ]

A.People should eat foods with more fibre.

B.Fibre can cure some diseases in some countries.

C.Increasing attention on diet is from experts.

D.Fibre is presented in vegetables and unrefined flour.

Human beings use a little less than half the water available(可利用的) worldwide. Yet occurrences (happen) of shortages and droughts(干旱) are causing hunger and poverty (poor) in some areas, and industrial and agricultural by products are polluting water supplies. Since the world's population is expected to double in the next 50 years, many experts think we are on the edge of a widespread water crisis(危机).

But that doesn't have to be the outcome. Water shortages do not have to trouble the world-if we start valuing water more than we have in the past. Just as we began to appreciate petroleum more after the 1970s oil crises, today we must start looking at water from a fresh economic view. We can no longer afford to consider water a actually free resource of which we can use as much as we like in any way we want.

Instead, far all uses except the domestic (home) demand of the poor, governments should price water to reflect its actual value. This means charging a fee for the water itself as well as for the supply costs.

Governments should also protect this resource by providing water in more economically and environmentally sound ways. For example, often the cheapest way to provide irrigation water in the dry tropics is through small scale projects, such as gathering rainfall in depressions(凹地) and pumping it to nearby cropland.

No matter what steps governments take to provide water more efficiently, they must change their legal approaches to water use. Rather than spread control among hundreds or even thousands of local, regional, and national agencies that watch various aspects of water use, countries should set up central organization to coordinate(协调) water policy.

1.What is the real cause of the possible water crisis?

[ ]

A.Only half of the world's water can be used.

B.The world population is increasing faster and faster.

C.Half of the world's water resources have been polluted.

D.People have not placed importance on water resources.

2.According to the author, the water price should ________.

[ ]

A.be reduced

B.meet the local people's demand

C.show its real value

D.be changed according to different situation

3.The author says that in some hot and dry areas it is advisable to ________.

[ ]

A.build big lakes to store water

B.build small and cheap irrigation systems

C.construct big pumping stations

D.channel water from nearby rivers to cropland

4.In order to make full use of the water supply, measures should be taken to ________.

[ ]

A.promise full protection of the environment

B.centralize the management of water resources

C.ask governments at all levels to be responsible

D.encourage local and regional of water resources

Flies are disliked by everyone except in Australia. In their childhood, Australians are taught flies are clean and beautiful. Only foreign flies are dirty and troublesome. It is true that Australian flies are quite different from others. They are a little larger in size, with the body and the wings shining with golden light. Their flying produces no sound and most of them are found in the forests in the northern mountains, living on the juice of plants. As the forests are sunny all around the year, none of the flies produces their young in wet places. So the flies there are clean. Not only will Australians never try to kill flies, but also they will protect them as they protect other animals. A golden fly is drawn on the note of an Australian dollar, and the kangaroo(袋鼠) is the only other animal that can be seen on Australian notes. Flies' “high position” can be known from that. Because the Australians have loved the flies for a long time, it is natural that they have been reproducing in great numbers. In the forests, visitors often see groups of flies flying overhead. There is a saying, “Keep your mouth shut while walking in the forests or the flies will fly into it.”

But flies have many natural enemies. In the forests, many birds and bigger insects(昆虫) feed on them, controlling them from increasing.

1.Why are flies liked by the Australians?

[ ]

A.They are large in size.

B.They have the wings shining with golden light.

C.They are clean and beautiful.

D.They made no sounds while flying.

2.The flies in Australia are clean because ________.

A.they live in the forests instead of wet places

B.they live in the northern mountains

C.they feed on sap of plants

D.they don't eat any food

[ ]

A.they are kept in every home

B.one is printed on Australian notes

C.they, together with the kangaroos, are drawn on the national flag

D.people prefer them to kangaroos

4.The saying “Keep your mouth shut while walking in the forests, or the flies will fly into in.” means ________.

[ ]

A.we must shut our mouths in the forests

B.we can often see flies flying over head

C.we must escape walking in the forest

D.the number of flies in the forests is quite large

5.The last paragraph tells us the reason for ________.

[ ]

A.the natural enemies love for flies

B.birds and insects living in the forests

  Dear Daniel,

It's New Year's Eve, and as I look back over my life tonight, there are things I've learned in this time that I want to pass along to you. Hopefully, you won't find yourself making some of the same mistakes in your life that I have made in mine.

Always be honest with others, but most importantly, with yourself. Now, this is not to say you must always tell the absolute truth to everyone, all the time. Don't use the truth as a weapon to hurt someone. Somebody who asks, “Do you like my jacket?” doesn't want to hear that maybe you think it's terrible. They are proud of it and happy and just trying to show off a little. It's okay to say you like it if it makes them happy. But for the really important things in life you should always try to be as honest as you can be.

Hold on to your friends. Some friends you will have for a lifetime, others will just seem to enter your life and pass on through. But every one of them is a treasure beyond measure. There will be times in your life when you will need them, and good friends will do that for you. When a friend needs you, be there for them, help them and get them back on their feet again.

Never make a promise unless you are sure you can keep it, and then try your best to keep it. A man is often judged by how he keeps his word. People will pardon you for breaking a promise sometimes when it was given honestly but had to be broken for reasons beyond your control, just don't make a habit of it.

Life is funny! Never be afraid to laugh about it. You are going to make mistakes and look silly at times, so always be willing to laugh at yourself. If you ever find yourself unable to laugh at your own mistakes, you are taking your way too seriously and need to lighten up.

No matter how bad today is, or how terrible yesterday was, tomorrow is a new chance. Put a smile on your face and do what need to be done.

If it's silly but it works, it isn't silly. Don't be afraid to try something new or unusual.

There is a lot more to life than these things Daniel, and hopefully I'll be in your life for a long time to come to help you learn them.

With love, always,

Dad

I needed to get some money so, after Christmas, I took a job in the clothes department at Graham's for the first fortnight of the January sale. I can't say that I enjoyed it, but it was an experience I'll never forget.

I could never understand why there were so many things in the sales; where did they all come from? Now I know the secret! Firstly, there is the special winter stock(存货) and the stock that people buy all the year round; some of these things are slightly reduced. Secondly, there are the summer clothes they couldn't sell last year; these are heavily reduced to clear them. Thirdly, there are cheap clothes bought in specially for the sales; these are put out at high prices ten days before the sale begins and then are reduced by 60% in the sale. Clever! Lastly, they buy in “seconds” (clothes not in perfect condition) for the sale and they are sold very cheaply.

When I arrived half an hour before opening on the first day of the sale, there was already a queue around three sides of the building. This made me very nervous.

When the big moment arrived to open the doors, the security guards, looking less confident(自信) than usual, came up to them, keys in hand. The moment they had unlocked the doors, they hid behind the doors for protection as the noisy crowd rushed in. I couldn't believe my eyes; this wasn't shopping, it was a battlefield! One poor lady couldn't keep her feet and was knocked over by people pushing from behind.

Clothes were flying in all directions as people searched for the sizes, colours and styles they wanted. Quarrels broke out. Mothers were using their small children to crawl(爬行) through people's legs and get hold of things they couldn't get near themselves.

Within minutes I had half a dozen people pushing clothes under my nose, each wanting to be the first served. Where had the famous English queue gone? The whole day continued like that, but I kept my temper! I was taking money hand over fist and began to realize why, twice a year, Graham's were happy to turn their expensive store into a battlefield like this.

In the sale fever, people were spending like water without thinking whether they needed what they were buying. As long as it was a bargain it was OK.

You won't believe this but as soon as I got home I crashed out for four hours. Then I had dinner and went back to bed, fearing the sound of the alarm which would tell me to get ready for the second day of the sale.

1.What kind of clothes is likely to be sold 5% cheaper?

[ ]

A.Clothes bought in specially for the sales.

B.Clothes not in perfect condition.

C.Last summer's clothes.

D.Clothes for winter.

2.Which of the following statements is true?

[ ]

A.The customers gave up the queuing, for which the English are famous.

B.The customers kept temper while looking for clothes they wanted.

C.Small children enjoyed crawling through people's legs.

D.The security guards were fearless of the crowd.

3.In the author's opinion, why were Graham's happy to make their expensive store into a “battlefield”?

[ ]

A.There were too many clothes and they wanted to clear them in the sales.

B.They were eager to show that they were clever at doing business.

C.They could take the chance to raise the prices of all their clothes.

D.They wanted to make more money by having sales.

4.The expression “crashed out” means ________.

[ ]

A.chatted with her friends

B.slept soundly

C.broke down

D.dined out

5.What would be the best title for the passage?

Mother's Day and Father's Day

People in the United States honor their parents with two special days, Mother's Day, on the second Sunday in May, and Father's Day, on the third Sunday in June.

Mother's Day was proclaimed(宣布) a day for national celebration by President Woodrow Wilson in 1915. Ann Jarvis from Grafton, West Virginia, had started the idea to have a day to honor mothers. She was the one who chose the second Sunday in May and also began the custom of wearing a carnation(康乃馨).

In 1909, Mrs. Dodd from Spokane, Washington, thought of the idea of a day to honor fathers. She wanted to honor her own father, William Smart. After her mother died, he had the responsibility of raising a family of five sons and a daughter. In 1910, the first father's Day was celebrated in Spokane. Senator Margaret Smith helped to set up Father's Day as a national celebration day, in 1972.

These days are set aside to show love and respect for parents. They raise their children and educate them to be responsible citizens. They give love and care. These two special days are celebrated in many different ways. On Mother's Day people wear carnations. A red one shows that the mother is alive. A white one shows that the mother is dead. Many people attend churches to honor parents. It is also a day when people whose parents are dead visit the cemetery(墓地).On these days families get together at home, as well as in restaurants. They often have outdoor barbecues for Father's Day. These are days of fun and good feelings and memories.

Another tradition is to give cards and gifts. Children make them in school. Many people make their own presents. These are valued more than the ones bought in stores. It is not the value of the gift that is important, but is “the thought that counts”. Greeting card stores, florists, candy makers, bakeries, telephone companies, and other stores do a lot of business during these holidays.

1.When was Father's Day became national celebration day?

[ ]

A.In 1915.
B.In 1909.

[ ]
