A Battery's Worst Nightmare(噩梦)

Portable electronics that can be carried about easily are only as good as their batteries and, let's face it, batteries aren't very good, especially when compared with, say, petrol, which packs 100 times a battery's energy into an equal space. That's why a large group of mechanical engineers(centered at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, but with partners at other universities and companies) are hard at work in an effort to replace batteries with a tiny engine that runs on fuel. Imagine a battery-free life! W hen the fuel runs out in your laptop or mobilephone, you just fill up and go.

The engine, about the size of a ten-cent coin, starts with a combustion chamber(燃烧室)that burns hydrogen(氢). Its tiny parts are etched onto silicon wafers(硅片) in the same manner that computer parts are imprinted onto integrated circuits(集成电路). The first engine is made up of five wafers. And since these wafers could be produced in much the same way as computer chips, they could probably be produced quite cheaply.

But the devil in all this nice detail is efficiency(效率). Tiny engine parts don't always behave like their scaled-up parts of the first engine. Something between the parts can slow down the works, according to Columbia University professor Luc Frechette, one of the engine's designers. Extreme heat from the combustion chamber is also a problem, often leaking to other parts of the engine.

The scientists' goal is to create an engine that will operate at 10 percent efficiency-that is, 10 times better than batteries operate. Frechette says that a complete system, with all parts of place and working, will be set up in the next couple of years, but commercial models aren't like until at least the end of the next ten years.

1.According to the passage, the title suggests that ________.

[ ]

A.batteries should be greatly improved

B.petrol will be used instead of batteries

C.the time of batteries will be gone forever

D.pollution caused by batteries must be solved

2.What's the meaning of the underlined word “devil” in paragraph 3?

[ ]

A.problem
B.advantage
C.invention
D.technique

3.What can we infer from the passage?

[ ]

A.The new invention doesn't need any fuel.

B.The new engine has been produced in quantity.

C.The new invention is much cheaper than the battery.

D.The new engine needs to be improved before it's on sale.

4.What is the main purpose of this passage?

[ ]

A.To introduce a new invention to readers.

B.To persuade readers not to use batteries.

C.To show us how the new invention works.

D.To declare when the engine will be on sale.

  Crossroads International

  How does Crossroads work?

Crossroads is a resource network. We take goods Hong Kong doesn't want and give them to people who badly need them. We collect those goods and give them out in the welfare arena(福利院) in Hong Kong, Mainland China, elsewhere in Asia, Eastern Europe and Africa. So Crossroads is just that:a Crossroads between need and resource.

  Who do we help?

The welfare agencies we help do not run on large budgets(预算). They are grass-root groups who have seen a need and tried to meet it. They can't get the job done without back-up, though, so our task is to help them do their task. Our warehouse is full of goods, from computers to high chairs, clothing to books, stationery to medical provision, cupboards to dining sets. They send us a list of their needs and we try to match it with the resource we have in stock.

  How do we operate?

Crossroads itself also operates on a low budget. We do not buy the goods we send. They are donated(捐赠). Similarly, rather than raising funds for freight (货运), we ask transport companies to donate their services. Nobody in our organization receives a salary. Even our full-time staff work on a voluntary basis.

Those that donate goods and services:

  ●Factories

  ●Manufacturers

  ●Hospitals

  ●Hotels

  ●Educational Institutions

  ●Householders

  ●Transport Companies

  ●Offices

  ●Other Charities

One resource that we are always in need of is people. While we receive large quantities of goods and there is never a short supply of requests for them, we are always in need of hands to help sort and prepare them for shipping.

What can I do?

We are always in need of people. We have a lot of tasks. If you are volunteering regularly, we can offer work in some of the following categories, some of the time. You are welcome to number your top three choices and we will do our best to accommodate(提供) them.

  ●Clothing categorization

  ●Sewing

  ●Toy categorization

  ●Furniture handling

  ●Book categorization

  ●Driving

  ●Household goods categorization

  ●Office work

  ●Electrical goods categorization

  ●Book keeping

  ●Stationery categorization

  ●Fund-raising

  ●Medical categorization

Informal conversation is an important part of any business relationship. Before you start a discussion, however, make sure you understand which topics are suitable and which are considered taboo(禁忌) in a particular culture. Latin Americans enjoy sharing information about their local history, art, and customs, expect questions about your family, and be sure to show pictures of your children. You may feel free to ask similar questions of your Latin American friends. The French think of conversation as an art form, and they enjoy the value of lively discussions as well as disagreements. For them, arguments can be interesting-and they can cover pretty much of any topic-as long as they occur in a respectful and intelligent(智慧的) manner.

In the United States, business people like to discuss a wide range of topics, including opinions about work, family, hobbies, and politics. In Japan, China, and Korea, however, people are much more private. They do not share much about their thoughts, feelings, or emotions because they feel that doing so might take away from the harmonious(和谐的) business relationship they're trying to build. Middle Easterners are also private about their personal lives and family matters. It is considered rude, for example, to ask a businessman from Saudi Arabia about his wife or children.

As general rule, it's best not to talk about politics or religion(宗教) with your business friends. This can get you into trouble, even in the United States, where people hold different views. In addition, discussing one's salary is usually considered unsuitable. Sports is typically a friendly subject in most parts of the world, although be careful not to criticize a national sport. Instead, be friendly and praise your host's team.

1.The author considers politics and religion ________.

[ ]

A.cheerful topics

B.taboo

C.rude topics

D.topics that can never be talked about

2.Which is typically a friendly topic in most places according to the author?

[ ]

A.Sports.
B.Children.
C.Personal feelings.
D.Families.

3.Why are people from Asia more private in their conversations with others?

[ ]

A.They don't want to talk with others much.

B.They don't want to have their good relationship with others harmed by informal conversations.

C.They are afraid to argue with their colleagues.

D.They want to keep their feelings to themselves.

4.What shouldn't you do when talking about sports with colleagues from another country?

[ ]

A.Praising your own country's sports.

B.Criticizing your own country's sports.

C.Praising the sports of your colleagues' country.

D.Criticizing the sports of your colleagues' country.

Treating depression(抑郁症) in the elderly with both medication and psychotherapy(心理) reduces the chance that their depression will return, according to a new study.

All of the patients in the study were 60 years of age or older and were followed for three years after the initial depression had been successfully treated with the antidepressant nortriptyline and weekly therapy.

Only 20 percent of 22 elderly patients given monthly therapy along with nortriptyline had further bouts of depression in the three years after their initial depression was treated successfully.

By comparison, 43 percent of 24 patients given medication alone suffered a recurrence of depression, while 64 percent of 21 patients who received therapy alone had another time of depression.

“Depression in late life is common and a major source of disability. Nonetheless, it is very treatable and its return can be prevented, most effectively with a combination of medication and interpersonal therapy, said lead researcher Dr. Charles F. Reynolds III, professor of psychiatry and neuroscience(神经系统科学) at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.

He suggested that managed-care organizations and medicare alike should pay for combination therapy.

The trend has been for insurance plans to pay for antidepressants but not for therapy, he said.

About one in six older persons seen in general medical practice, and even more of those living in hospitals and nursing homes, suffer from major depression, Reynolds said.

The elderly are vulnerable to depression because they are burdened with illness and may be abandoning certain abilities, such as driving.

The elderly also face the loss of loved ones and increasing social isolation. “Perhaps the most important message of this study is that the use of psychotherapy is important in older adults,” said Dr. Dan G. Blazer, professor of psychiatry at Duke University Medical center in Durham, N. C.

“While these findings are not a surprise to specialists, it is important that both primary care doctors and patients know the depression can be treated, and that the combination of medication and psychotherapy is superior to the effects of either alone.”

1.What is the best title of this passage?

[ ]

A.A new study in the field of medicine

B.Talk therapy best treat depression in elderly

C.The use of psychotherapy helps the society a lot

D.The elderly should not be isolated

B.The elderly are especially vulnerable to social isolation.

C.More than one person out of six living in hospitals and nursing homes suffer from major depression.

D.Experts thought that the study was a surprise because it is a new discovery.

4.The article quoted two professors' words in order to ________.

Twenty Thousand Miles under the Sea is a fascinating tale of adventure with Captain Nemo(“No Name”) in his submarine(海下的) ship, the Nautilus. Jules Verne had been around ships and boats most of his life. But his first trip to America in 1867 was his first ocean voyage. The ship which carried Jules Verne from his native France was the Great Eastern, which was used to lay the first successful Atlantic cable(电缆) linking England and America the year before. Verne made the most of his opportunity. With his notebook, he followed the crew members around. What kind of submarine life had they caught? What kind of fish had they seen? What seaweeds? What shells? What did they know about the ocean's currents(洋流)? Its channels? Its depths and shallows? Six weeks later Verne was home again with his notebook filled on his voyage. He went aboard his little boats where he always wrote. On the desk were piles of papers on which he had attempted to design submarines. Surely, he thought, his next book was meant to be about life at the bottom of the sea, life in a submarine. Not a tiny, clumsy craft like all of them so far. Not a miserable model likely to bring death to men in it. It would be a giant undersea boat. It would have comfort yet undreamed of. Twenty Thousand Miles under the Sea appeared three years later. It delighted everyone. “A splendid story,” most readers said, “Utterly impossible, but exciting!”

1.According to this passage, the Nautilus was the ________.

[ ]

A.first practical submarine

B.invention of Captain Nemo

C.product of Verne's imagination

D.imagination of Captain Nemo

2.Verne's questions were mainly about the crew's ________.

[ ]

A.A comfortable big undersea ship yet undreamed of.

B.A tiny, clumsy craft like all of them so far.

C.A miserable model likely to bring death to men in it.

D.A comfortable, small undersea boat that could move swiftly.

4.Verne wrote this book in order to ________.

A.lead to better understanding between Europe and America

B.encourage men to try things though impossible

C.lead to discoveries in the centre of the earth

It was at least two months before Christmas when nine-year-old Almie Rose told her father and me that she wanted a new bicycle. As Christmas drew nearer, her desire for a bicycle seemed to fade, or so we thought. We purchased the latest rage, Baby-Sitter's Club dolls, and a doll house. Then, much to our surprise, on December 23rd, she said that she “really wanted a bike more than anything else.”
