A characteristic of American culture that has become almost a tradition is to respect the self-made man the man who has risen to the top through his own efforts, usually beginning by working with his hands. While the leader in business or industry or the college professor occupies a higher social position and commands prefer respect in the community than the common labourer or even the skilled factory worker. He may take pains to point out that his father started life in America as a farmer or labourer of some sort.
This attitude toward manual(体力的) labour is now still seen in many aspects of American life. One is invited to dinner at a home that is not only comfortably but even luxuriously (豪华地) furnished and in which there is every evidence of the fact that the family has been able to afford foreign travel, expensive hobbies, and college education for the children, yet the hostess probably will cook the dinner herself, will serve it herself and will wash dishes afterward, furthermore the dinner will not consisst merely of something quickly and easily assembled from contents of various cans and a cake or a pie bought at the nearby bakery. On the contrary, the hostess usually takes pride in careful preparation of special dishes. A professional man may talk about washing the car, digging in his flowerbeds, painting the house. His wife may even help with these things, just as he often helps her with the dishwashing. The son who is away at college may wait on table and wash dishes for his living, or during the summer he may work with a construction gang on a highway in order to pay for his education.

It was at least two months before Christmas when nine-year-old Almie Rose told her father and me that she wanted a new bicycle. As Christmas drew nearer, her desire for a bicycle seemed to fade, or so we thought. We bought the latest rage, Baby-Sitter’s Club dolls, and a doll house. Then, much to our surprise, on December 23rd, she said that she“really wanted a bike more than anything else.”
It was just too late, what with all the details of preparing Christinas dinner and buying lastminute gifts, to take the time to select the“right bike”for our little girl. So, here we were--Christmas Eve around 9:00 p.m., with Almie and her six-year-old brother, Dylan, nestled snug in their beds. Now we could only think of the bicycle and the disappointment of our child.“What if I make a little bicycle out of clay(泥)and write a note that she could trade the clay model in for a real bike?”her dad asked.“This is an expensive item and she is‘such a big girl,’it would be much better for her to pick it out.”So he spent the next four hours painstakingly working with clay to make a tiny bike.
On Christmas morning, we were excited for Almie to open the little heart-shaped package with the beautiful red and white clay bike and the note. Finally, she opened it and read the note aloud.“Does this mean that I trade in this bike that Daddy made me for a real one?”Beaming, I said,“Yes.”Almie had tears in her eyes when she replied,“I could never trade in this beautiful bicycle that Daddy made me. I’d rather keep this than get a real bike.”At that moment, we would have moved heaven and earth to buy her every bicycle on the planet!

Statuses are marvelous human inventions that enable us to get along with one another and to determine where we“fit”in society. As we go about our everyday lives, we mentally attempt to place people in terms of their statuses. For example, we must judge whether the person in the library is a reader or a librarian, whether the telephone caller is a friend or a salesman, whether the unfamiliar person on our property is a thief or a meter reader, and so on.
The statuses we assume often vary with the people we encounter, and change throughout life. Most of us can, at very high speed, assume the statuses that various situations require. Much of social interaction consisits of identifying and selecting among appropriate statuses and allowing other people to assume their statuses in relation to us. This means that we fit our actions to those of other people based on a constant mental process of appraisal and interpretation. Although some of us find the task more difficult than others, most of us perform it rather effortlessly.
A status has been compared to ready-made clothes. Within certain limits the buyer can choose style and fabric. But an American is not free to choose the costume (服装) of a Chinese peasant or that of a Hinduprince. We must choose from among the clothing presented by our society. Further more, our choice is limits to a size that will fit, as well as by out pocketbook (钱包). Having made a choice within these limits we can have certain alterations made, but apart from minor adjustments, we tend to be limited to what the stores have on their racks. Statuses too come ready made, and the range of choice among them is limited.
1.In the first paragraph, the writer tells us that statuses can help us ________.
[ ]
A.determine whether a person is fit for a certain job
B.behave appropriately in relation to other people
C.protect ourselves in unfamiliar situations
D.make friends with other people
2.According to the writer, people often assume different statuses ________.
[ ]
A.in order to identify themselves with others
B.in order to better identify others
C.as their mental processes change
D.as the situation changes
3.The word“appraisal”(Para. 2, Line 7) most probably means“ ________ ”.
[ ]
4.In the last sentence of the second paragraph, the pronoun“it”refers to“ ________ ”.
[ ]
A.fitting our actions to shose of other people appropriately
B.identification of other people’s statuses
C.selecting one’s own statuses
D.constant mental process
5.By saying that“an American is not free to choose the costume of a Chinese peasant or that of a Hindu prince”(Para. 3, Lines 2-3), the writer means ________.
[ ]
A.different people have different styles of clothes
B.ready-made clothes may need alterations
C.statuses come ready made just like clothes
D.our choice of statuses is limited

One of the interesting things about Cuba is its educational system. As in many other countries, schools are free. What is unusual is that schools combine study with manual work. Each school has a plot(一块) of land where the children work for each day. They plant vegetables, which they weed and water, and later they harvest the crops. In this way, they develop good working habits and learn how important it is to produce. Usually, children do not like vegetables such as spinach(菠菜), green beans, or cabbage. But by growing vegetables themselves, Cuban children soon develop a taste for them. During the summer, older children also go to the country to help the farmers with the crops.

The journey two naval (海军的) officers made some time ago to the very deepest point on the earth makes us realize how much of the world still remains to be explored (探测). The two men went down seven miles to the bottom of the Pacific Ocean inside a small steel ball called a“bathyscaphe”to find out if there are any ocean currents (急流) or signs of life.
It was necessary to set out early, so that the bathyscaphe would come to the surface in daylight(白昼), and so be easily found by the mother ship which would be waiting for it. The divers began preparations at dawn and soon afterwards, when all was ready, the steel ball disappeared under the surface of the water.
In time, the temperature dropped to freezing-point and the men trembled (颤抖) inside the ball. They kept in touch with the mother ship by telephone describing how they felt. Then, at a depth of 3,000 feet, the telephone stopped working and they were quite cut off from the outside world. At 30,000 feet, the men were surprised by a sudden, loud noise: even the smallest hole in the ball would have meant instant (立即的) death. Luckily, though, it was only one of the outer windows that had broken. Soon afterwards, the bathyscaphe touched the soft ocean floor raising a big cloud of“dust”made up of different kinds of small, dead sea animals. Here, powerful lights lit up the dark water and the men were surprised to see fish swimming just above them quite untroubled by the very large water pressure. But they did not dare to leave the lights on for long, as the heat from them made the water boil. Quite unexpectedly, the telephone began working again and the weak but clear voices of the officers were heard on the mother ship. After a stay of thirty minutes the men began their journey up, arriving three hours later, cold and wet through, but none the worse for their experience.
1.What did the officers find out at the bottom of the sea?
[ ]
A.They only found different dead sea animals.
B.They did find signs of life.
C.There was no signs of any life.
D.There was only dust.
2.The journey to the bottom of the sea helped us to realize that ________.
[ ]
A.much of the world hasn’t yet been explored
B.there are not any signs of life at the bottom of the sea
C.strong water - pressure has great effect on fish
D.powerful lights can not turned on at the ocean floor without killing fish
3.Which of the following is closest in meaning to“They were cold and wet through, but none the worse for their experience.”
[ ]
A.They were cold and wet through, which was the worst thing of all.
B.They were even worse than cold and wet through at the bottom of the sea.
C.Considering what they had just experienced, being cold and wet through was not too bad.
D. For such an experience, being cold and wet through was not bad for them at all.

Recently, a professor of philosophy in the United States has written a book called Money and the Meaning of Life. He has discovered that how we deal with money in our day-to-day life has more meaning than we usually think. One of the exercises he asked his students to do is to keep a record of every penny they spend for a week. From the way they spend their money, they can see what they really value in life.
He says our relation with others often become clearly defined when money enters the picture. You might have wonderful friendship with somebody and you think that you are very good friends. But you will know him only when you ask him to lend you some money. If he does, it brings something to the relationship that seems stronger than ever before. Or it can suddenly weaken the relationship if he doesn’t. This person may say that he has a certain feeling, but if it is not carried out in the money world, there is something less real about it.
Since money is so important to us, we consider those who possess a lot of it to be very important. The author interviewed some millionaires in researching his book.
Question: What is the most surprising thing you have discovered about being rich, because you are a self-made man?
Answer: The most surprising thing is how people give me so much respect. I am nothing. I don’t know much. All I am is rich.
People just have an idea of making more and more money, but what is it for? How much do I need for any given purposes in my life? In his book, the professor uncovered an important need in modern society: to bring back the idea that money is an instrument rather than the end. Money plays an important role in the material world, but expecting money to give happiness may be missing the meaning of life.
1.According to the first paragraph, people have not realized ________.
[ ]
A.how important money is in their day-to-day life
B.how one spends money shows what is important to him
C.that money is more important than their philosophy of life
D.that their understanding of life is more important than money
2.The author seems to believe that asking your friend to lend you some money ________.
[ ]
A.is a good way to test your friendship
B.will do harm to your friendship
C.will strengthen (增进) your friendship
D.is a good way to break off your friendship
3.What can we learn about the millionaire from his answer in the interview?
[ ]
A.He does not feel that he is well educated.
B.He does not think that he is a very important person.
C.He does not think that being rich deserves so much attention.
D.He does not consider himself to be very successful.
4.What does the American professor of philosophy want to explain in his book?
[ ]
A.Money is an end.
B.Money is a means.
C.Money is everything.
D.Money is unimportant.
5.Which of the following might the author disagree?
[ ]
A.Money is important in modern society.
B.The meaning of life does not completely lie in money.
C.Wealth will surely bring the owner happiness.
D.Happiness is not necessarily the result of wealth.
