Greenwich(格林威治)is on the River, five miles from the middle of London, and its history is two thousand years old. The first English people were fishermen there, and they named the place Greenwich, meaning“green village”. Later the English kings and queens lived at Greenwich in their beautiful places.

The name of the earliest palace was Placentia. Its windows were made of glass-the first in England. Henry Ⅷ lived there. He knew that England must be strong at sea. So he started two big ship-yards(船 坞)at Greenwich, and for 350 years the ships which were made there were the best in the world.

But trouble was coming to Greenwich. In 1649, a war started in England and for eleven years there was no king. The men who had worked for him at Placentia decided to live in the place themselves. They sold all its beautiful things, and bought small pieces of the palace garden with money. Finally, the war ended and King Charles Ⅱ came back. But Placentia was falling down. So King Charles built a new and bigger palace, which is now open to the public.

At this time, Charles was worried about losing so many of its ships at sea: their sailors did not know how to tell exactly where they were. So in 1675, Charles make John Flamsteed, the first astronomer(天文学家) in England, try to find the answer. Flamsteed worked in a new building on the high ground in Greenwich Park. From it with a telescope which he made himself, Flamsteed could look all round the sky. And he did, night after night, for twenty years. Carrying on Flamsteed’s work a hundred years later, an astronomer called Harrison finally made a clock which told the time at sea, and helped sailors to know where they were. Yoa can see Harrison’s clock, still working, in Greenwich’s museum of the sea. Because of Flamsteed’s work, every country in the world now tells its time by Greenwich time.

The temperature of your body should be always just the same, no matter the weather is hot or cold. That is why the doctor uses his thermometer(温度计)when you are sick. When you are well, your temperature is ninety-eight and six tenths degrees. If he finds it higher than that, it is a sure sign that some thing is wrong.

The body keeps the same temperature all the time, because it balances the heat it produces and it gives off. It is always burning up food and producing heat. It can produce heat faster when it needs to or give off heat faster when it becomes too warm. Let’s see how this happens.

The heat of your body is given off chiefly through the skin. When you are cold, your skin is tight and shows“goose flesh”. When you get chilly, you must dance around to keep warm or else you will shiver( 颤抖). Then your muscles begin to work, burn up fule(燃料) , and produce more heat. It is not pleasant to shiver, so you usually prefer warming up by exercise, or put on more clothes to keep heat in.

When you are warm, the skin is loose and soft. It is so supplied with blood that heat is given off rapidly. If you get too warm. You begin to sweat, and more body heat is used in evaporating(蒸发)the moisture (潮湿) from your skin. You wear less clothing, too, in warm weather or warm room, so that warm can be given off freely. You feel less like exercising because your body is warm already, and the extra heat produced by exercise makes you uncomfortable.

You can see from this why you feel differently in different kinds of weather, In summer, when it is warm, you feel tired and lazy. You do not care to work or play, but enjoy lying and doing nothing. When you get out of doors in winter, the cold air makes you feel lively. You want to run and play.

[ ]

B.producing heat from food

C.giving off the heat produced in it

D.stopping producing heat when it needs

3.When one gets very cold, which of the following will not happen to him?

[ ]

A.His skin will become tight in order to keep warm.

B.He can exercise to make his muscle produce more heat.

D.He will be certainly to shiver to produce more heat.

4.When one gets too warm, he begins to sweat in order to ________.

Then comes July, and with it examinations; but these are soon finished and with them ends the school year. Boys and girls have nearly two months’ holiday before them as they leave school by train and car to return home to their fathers and mothers.

The summer holidays are the best part of the year for most children. The weather is usually good, so that one can spend most of one’s time playing in the garden or, if one lives in the country, out in the woods and fields. Even if one lives in a big town, one can usually go to a park to play.

The best place for a summer holiday, however, is the seaside. Some children are lucky enough to live near the sea, but for the others who do not, a week or two at one of the big seaside towns is something which they will talk about for the whole of the following year.

In England, it is not only the rich who can take their children to the seaside; if a factory worker or a bus driver, a street cleaner or a waiter wants to take his wife and children to Southen or Margate, Black-pool or Clacton, he is usually quite able to do so.

Now, what is it that children like so much than any other things? Of course, there are lots of new things to see, nice things to eat, and exciting things to do, but it is the feelings of sand under one’s feet, of salt water on one’s skin, and of the warm sun on one’s back that make the seaside what it is.

1.Summer holidays start ________.

[ ]

A.with July

B.as soon as the examinations are over

C.in mid-June

[ ]

A.stay with their parents for all the vacation

B.do more reading

D.meet their old friends

4.In England, ________ can take their families to the seaside.

5.________ make the seaside what it is.
