Treasure hunts have excited people's imagination for hundreds of years both in real life and in books such as Robert Louis Stevenson's Treasure Island. Kit Williams, a modern writer, had the idea of combining the real excitement of a treasure hunt with clues(线索) found in a book when he wrote a children's story, Masquerade, in 1979. The book was about a hare, and a month before it came out Williams buried a gold hare in a park in Bedfordshire. The book contained a large number of clues to help readers find the hare, but Williams put in a lot of “red herrings”, or false clues, to mislead them.

Ken Roberts, the man who found the hare, had been looking for it for nearly two years. Although he had been searching in the wrong area most of the time, he found it by logic(逻辑), not by luck. His Success came from the fact that he had gained an important clue at the start. He had realized that the words:“One of Six to Eight” under the first picture in the book connected the hare in some way to Katherine of Aragon, the first of Henry VIII's six wives. Even here, however, Williams had succeeded in misleading him. Ken knew that Katherine of Aragon had died at Kimbolton in Cambridgeshire in 1536 and thought that Williams had buricd the hare there. He had been digging there for over a year before a new idea occurred to him. He found out that Kit Williams had spent his childhood near Ampthill, in Bcdfordshire, and thought that he must have buried the hare in a place he knew well, but he still could not see the connection with Katherine of Aragon, until one day he came across two stone crosses in Ampthill Park and learnt that they had been built in her honor in 1773.

Even then his search had not come to an end. It was only after he had spent several nights digging around the cross that he: decided to write to Kit Williams to find out if he was wasting his time there. Williams encouraged him to continue, and on February 24th 1982, he found the treasure. It was worth 3000 in the beginning, but the excitement it had caused since its burial made it much more valuable.

Visitors to Britain are always complaining(抱怨) about English food. But they do not really know what they are talking about because they seldom get a chance to eat it. Most of the restaurants in large towns have foreign owners and serve foreign food. When visitors are invited to eat in an English home their hosts(主人) often feel they must offer them something foreign and exotic.

Those of us who do not know English food think that as its best it can be really very good. On the other hand, it is true to say that it is something terrible. Part of the problem is that we are not really interested in food we eat to live, we do not live to eat. So we don't spend the necessary time and effort needed to cook really good meals. We prefer food that is simple and easy to cook, or ready prepared food which only needs heating up before eating.

You can find the best English food in the country away from the large towns, where life is slower and people are not in such a hurry, But, of course, most visitors come to London. They come because they are interested in shopping and sightseeing. They do not come because of the food, so why should they complain about it?

There is no denying that students should learn something about how computers work, just as we expect them at least to understand that the internal-combustion engine(内燃机) has something to do with burning fuel, expanding gases and pistons(活塞) being driven. For people should have some basic idea of how the things that they use do what they do. Further, students might be helped by a course that considers the computer's impact on society. But that is not what is meant by computer literacy. For computer literacy is not a form of literacy(读写能力); it is a trade skill that should not be taught as a liberal art.

Learning how to use a computer and learning how to program one or two distinct activities. A case might be made that the competent citizens of tomorrow should free themselves from their fear of computers. But this is quite different from saying that all ought to know how to program one. Leave that to people who have chosen programming as a career. While programming can be lots of fun, and while our society needs some people who are experts at it. The same is true of auto repair and violin-making.

Learning how to use a computer is not that difficult, and it gets easier all the time as programs become more user-friendly. Let us assume that in the future everyone is going to have to know how to use a computer to be a computer citizen. What does the phrase “learning to use a computer” mean? It sounds like “learning to drive a car”, that is, it sounds as if there is some set of definite skills that, once acquired, enable one to use a computer. In fact, “learning to use a computer” is much more like “learning to play a game”, but learning the rules of one game may not help you play a second game, whose rules may not be the same. There is no such a thing as teaching someone how to use a computer. One can only teach people to use this or that program, and generally that is easily accomplished.

1.To be the competent citizens of tomorrow, people should ________.

[ ]

A.try to lay a solid foundation in computer science

B.be aware of how the things that they use do what they do

C.learn to use a computer by acquiring a certain set of skills

D.understand that programming a computer is more essential than repairing a car

2.In the second paragraph “violin-making” is mentioned to show that ________.

[ ]

A.programming a computer is as interesting as making a violin

B.our society need experts in different fields

C.violin-making requires as much skill as computer programming

D.people who can use a computer don't necessarily have to know computer programming

3.The author's purpose in writing this passage is to ________.

[ ]

A.stress the impact of the computer on society

B.explain the concept of computer literacy

C.illustrate the requirements for being competent citizen of tomorrow

D.emphasize that computer programming is an interesting and challenging job

Many people go to school for an education. They learn languages, history, physics, chemistry and maths. Others go to schools to learn a skill so that they can make a living. School education is very important and useful. Yet no one can learn everything from school. A teacher no matter how much he knows, can not teach his students everything they want to know. The teacher's job is to show his students how to learn. He teaches them how to read and how to think. So much more is to be learned outside school by the students themselves.

It is always more important to know to study by oneself than to memorize some facts or a formula. It is actually quite easy to learn a certain fact in history or a formula in maths. But it is very difficult to use a formula in working out a maths problem. Great scientists, such as Einstein, Newton, and Galileo, didn't get everything from school, but they were all successful. They invented so many things for mankind. The reason for their success is that they knew how to study. They read books that were not taught at school. They would ask many questions as they read and they did thousands of experiments.

Every few hundred meters along the wall there are watch towers, where soldiers used to keep watch. When the enemy came, fires were lit and at the same time guns were fired to warn soldiers at other towers, one column of smoke with one gunshot meant an enemy troop of about 100, two columns with two shots meant 500. In this way, a warning message could be sent 500 kilometers within a few hours.

It was very difficult to build and rebuilt such a great wall over wild and distant country without any modern machines, all the work had to be done by hand. Their living conditions were terrible. Thousands of men died and were buried under the wall they built. The Great Wall was made not only of stone and earth, but of the flesh and blood of millions of men.

After the Great Wall was rebuilt hundreds of years ago, no more work was done on it until the People's Republic of China was founded. After that, parts of the wall were repaired.
