One evening Mr. Green was driving in his car along a lonely country road. He had been to London where he had drawn £50 from the bank, and he was now returning home with the money which he had put in his pocket book. At the loneliest part of the road a man in shabby, badly-fitting clothes stopped him and asked for a lift. Mr. Green told him to get into the car and continued on his way. As he talked to the man he learned that he had been in prison for robbery and had broken out of prison two days ago. Mr. Green was very worried at the thought of the £50 that he had put in his pocket book. Suddenly he saw a police-car and had a bright idea. He had just reached a small town where the speed limit was 30 miles an hour. He pressed down the accelerator and drove the car as fast as it would go. He looked back and saw that the police-car had seen him and had begun to chase him. After a mile or so the police-car overtook him and ordered him to stop. A policeman got out and came to Mr. Green's car. Mr. Green had hoped that he could tell the policeman about the escaped robber, but the man had taken a gun out of his pocket and had put it to Mr. Green's back. The policeman took out his notebook and pencil and said he wanted Mr. Green's name and address. He had given up all hope of his £50, but just as he reached the outskirts of London, the passenger said he wanted to get out here. Mr. Green stopped the car, the man got out and said, “Thanks for the lift. You've been good to me. This is the least I can do in return.” And he handed Mr. Green the policeman's notebook.

In July 1994 Jupiter, the largest planet in our solar system, was struck by 21 pieces of comet. When the fragments landed in the southern part of the giant planet, the explosions were watched by scientists here on earth. But what if our own planet was hit by a comet?

The year is 2094. It has been announced that a comet is heading towards the Earth. Most of it will miss our planet, but two fragments will probably hit the southern part of the Earth. The news has caused panic.

On 17 July, a fragment four kilometers wide enters the Earth's atmosphere with a huge explosion. About half of the fragment is destroyed. But the major part survives and hits the South Atlantic at 200 times the speed of sound. The sea boils and an enormous wave is created and spreads. The wall of water rushes towards southern Africa at 800 kilometers an hour. Cities on the African coast are totally destroyed and millions of people are drowned. The wave moves into the Indian Ocean and heads towards Asia.

Millions of people are already dead in the southern part of the Earth, but the north won't escape for long. Tons of broken pieces are thrown into the atmosphere by the explosions. As the sun is hidden by clouds of dust, temperatures around the world fall to almost zero. Crops are ruined. Wars break out as countries fight for good. A year later civilization has collapsed. No more than 10 million people have survived.

Could it really happen? In fact, it has already happened more than once in the history of the Earth. The dinosaurs were on the Earth for over 160 million years. Then 65 million years ago they suddenly disappeared. Many scientists believe that the Earth was hit by a space fragment. The dinosaurs couldn't survive in the cold climate that followed and they became extinct. Will we meet the same end?

[ ]

A.The whole world becomes extremely cold.

B.All the coastal cities in Africa are destroyed.

C.The whole mankind becomes extinct.

D.The visit of the comet results in war.

2.Why does the author mention dinosaurs at the end of the passage?

[ ]

A.Because they could only live in the warm climate.

B.Because they once dominated the earth.

C.Because their extinction indicate future disasters.

The easy way out isn't always easiest. I learned that lesson when I decided to treat Doug, my husband of one month, to a special meal. I glanced through my cookbook and chose a menu which included homemade break. Knowing the bread would take time, I started on it as soon as Doug left for work, As I was not experienced in cooking, I thought if a dozen was good, two dozen would be better, so I doubled everything. As Doug loved oranges, I also opened a can of orange and poured it all into the bowl. Soon there was a sticky dough(面团) covered with ugly yellowish marks. Realizing I had been defeated, I put the dough in the rubbish bin outside so I wouldn't have to face Doug laughing at my work, I went on preparing the rest of the meal, and when Doug got home we sat down to Cornish chicken with rice. He tried to enjoy the meal but seemed disturbed. Twice he got up and went outside. sayig he thought he heard a noise. The third time he left. I went to the windows to see what be was doing. Looking out I saw Doug standing about three feet from the rubbish bin, holding the lid up with a stick and looking into the container. When I came out of the house, he dropped the stick and explained that there was something alive in out rubbish bin. Picking up the stick again, he held the lid up enough for me to see. I felt cold. But I stepped closer and looked harder. Without doubt it was my work. The hot sun had caused the dough to double in size and the fermcnting yeast(酵母) made the surface shake and sigh as though it were breathing. I had to admit what the ‘living thing’ was and why it was there. I don't know who was more embarrassed(尴尬) by the whole thing Doug or me.

One of the greatest killers in the Western world is heart disease. The death rate from the disease has been increasing at an alarming speed for the past thirty years. Today in Britain, for example, about four hundred people a day die of heart disease. Medical experts know that people can reduce their chances of getting heart disease by exercising reducing stress in their work.

However, Western health-care systems are still not paying enough attention to the prevention of the disease. There is a need for more programs to educate the public about the causes and prevention of heart disease. Instead of supporting such programs, however, the U. S. health-care system is spending large sums of money on the surgical(外科的) treatment of the disease after it develops. This emphasis on the treatment clearly has something to do with the technological advances that have taken place in the past ten to fifteen years. In this time, modern technology has enabled doctors to develop new surgical techniques. Many operations that were considered impossible or too risky a few years ago are now performed every day in U. S. hospitals. The result has been a huge increase in heart surgery.

Although there is no doubt that heart surgery can help a large number of people, some people point out that the emphasis on the surgical treatment of the disease has three clear disadvantages: First, it attracts interest and money away from the question of prevention. Second, it causes the costs of general care to rise. After hospitals buy the expensive equipment that is necessary for modern heart surgery, they must try to recover the money they have spent. To do this, they raise for all their patients, not just those patients whose treatment requires the equipment. The third disadvantage is that doctors are encouraged to perform surgery even on patients for whom an operation is unnecessary because the equipment and expert skills are there. A government office recently stated that major heart surgery was often performed even though its chances of success were low. In one type of heart surgery, for example, only 15 percent of patients improved their conditions after the surgery. However, more than 100000 of these operations are performed in the United States every year.

1.What effect has modern technology had on medicine?

[ ]

A.It has reduced the costs of medical treatment.

B.It has helped save the lives of most patients.

C.It has encouraged doctors to do more heart surgery.

D.It has helped educate people about the prevention of heart disease.

2.The underlined part “To do this”(in Paragraph 3) refers to ________.

[ ]

A.to help patients recover

B.to increase the number of heart surgery

C.to get back the money spent on the equipment

D.to buy new equipment for the treatment of heart disease

3.The author would agree that ________.

[ ]

A.more money should be spent on the prevention of heart disease

B.heart surgery has helped most patients improve their conditions

C.modern technology has made heart surgery more risky than before

D.the public have known a great deal about the causes of heart disease

4.What would be the best title for the passage?

[ ]

A.The Greatest Killer in the West

B.Heart Disease: Treat or Prevent?

C.Modern Technology and Heart Surgery

D.Heart Surgery: Advantages and Disadvantages

Where did the British people come from? This is an extraordinarily interesting question, since they are a mixture of many different races, and all these races invaded(入侵) Britain at various times from Europe. Nobody knows very much about Britain before the Romans came during the first century B. C., but there had been at least three invasions(入侵) before that. The first of these was by the Iberians. The other two were by Celtic tribes(部落): first the Gaels, whose descendants(后裔) are the modern Scots and Irish, some of whom still speak the Gaelic language; and secondly the Britons, who gave their name to the whole island of Britain. These were the people whom the Romans conquered. But the Roman Empire was overthrown by the Germanic tribes, which once overran(横行于) the whole of Western Europe.

There were three great Germanic tribes which invaded Britain: the Angles, the Saxons and Jutes; and together they form the basis of the modern English race. The Britons, as a race, disappeared except in Wales and Cornwall. Many Welsh people still speak their “British” language, which is called Welsh. The Angles were so numerous that the country was called Angle-land, i. e. England, and the Anglo-Saxon language was old English, in other words, modern English has descended directly from it.

So far then, we have noted the Iberians, two kinds of Celts; the Romans and the Germanic peoples, which we shall call collectively the Saxons: but the story is by no means ended. A few hundred years later a further invasion took place from the North-East, that of the Danes. Finally, and more important, there came the great Norman invasion. In the year 1066, Duke William of Normandy claimed the English throne(王位) and he defeated and killed the Saxon King Harold at the Battle of Hastings. He went on to conquer the whole country and was crowned(加冕) William j of England. Our present Queen is one of his descendants. There has never been another invasion of Britain in the 900 years since William the Conqueror, so that all the various elements(人的一群) have had time to settle down and from one people.

1.According to the passage ________ invaded Britain first.

[ ]

A.the Romans
B.the Iberians
C.the Gaels
D.the Britons

2.The British people are descendants of ________.

[ ]

A.the Romans
B.the Germanic peoples
C.the Normans
D.many different races

3.Modern English is mainly derived from ________.

[ ]

A.the Garlic language

B.the “British” language

C.the Germanic language

D.the Anglo-Saxon language

4.Which of the following statements is not true?

[ ]

A.The Britons form a large part of the modern English race.

B.Some languages of former invaders still exist in Britain now.

C.The last and greatest invasion Britain suffered from was the Norman invasion.

D.It can be inferred that the name of England is derived from the name of one of the Germanic tribes.

5.This passage deals mainly with ________.

[ ]

A.the past suffering of Britain

B.the history of Britain

C.the origin of the British people

D.the development of the English language

Not everyone in the world requires the same amount(量) of living space. The amount of space a person needs around him is a cultural(文化的) difference, not an economic(经济的) one. Knowing your own psychological(心理的) space needs is important because they strongly affect your choices, including, for example, the number of bedrooms in the home. If you were brought up in a two-child family and both you and your sister or brother had your own bedrooms, the chances are if you have two children or more, that you also will offer separate bedrooms for them. In America, for example, they train people to want to have their own rooms by giving them their own rooms when they are babies. This is very unusual in the world. In many other countries, the baby sleeps in the same bed with his parents or in bed near them.

The space in the home also shows a lot about psychological space needs. Some families gather closer to each other and the size of their house has nothing to do with it. Others have separate little corners where family members go to be alone.

Although it is true that psychological space needs are not decided by economic reasons, they sometimes have to be changed a little because of economic pressure(压力). It is almost impossible, however, to completely change your psychological space needs.

1.The first sentence in Paragraph 1 “Not everyone in the world requires the same amount of space” means “________”.

[ ]

A.Not two people need, exactly the same amount of living space

B.Living space requirements are not always the same

C.The world requires the same amount of living space

D.Nobody needs a required amount of living space

2.Some families gather closer to each other at home than others because ________.

[ ]

A.they have limited living space

B.they are brought up in a large family

D.the children in the family sleep in the same bed with their parents

3.Which of the following is true according to the passage?

The gray-haired lady can't wait to leave the building to search for her dad. Unless watched, she will walk in the streets in an effort to find her father, who died 30 years ago.

Not all cases of Alzheimer's disease look like this. but Alzheimer's is a serious disease that is said to be the fourth or fifth leading cause of death for people over age 75.

It is said that about three percent of the U. S. population over age 65 have Alzheimer's. In the early stages, people may exhibit short term memory loss. Some may experience changes in personality, easy to be angry. As the disease progresses, patients might lose the ability to move and may be unable to speak or move at all. This progressive disease generally lasts 8 to 10 years before death occurs.

While no one is certain what causes these changes in the brain's nerve fibers(神经纤维), their effect is certain. Alzheimer's destroys not only the patients but also spouses(配偶), friends and families.

What should you do if you notice progressive memory loss in yourself or a loved one? Have the person examined by a doctor who is a specialist in the treatment of Alzheimer's disease. Though many reasons other than Alzheimer's disease may cause memory loss, its early diagnosis(诊断) and treatment may delay some of the most serious effects.

What feling will you likely experience should a loved one suffer from Alzheimer's disease? A person will often go through the various stages of sadness, shock, anger, and so on. If the spouse develops the disease, you may experience hurt and disappointment when he or she doesn't remember you are married.

Life for the Alzheimer's patients and their loved ones will never be the same as the disease progresses, bringing a deep sorrow, loss and even anger towards God. No matter what feelings are present, facing them honestly will serve one better than burying them.

Then I looked at my financial(财政的) package.

The cost of Dream school's tuition(学费), room and board was around $ 40,000-an impossible sum! How could I afford to attend? They told me that even though it would be a financial problem, I could go wherever I would be happiest. But as I was always careful with money. I wasn't sure what to do.

One of the schools that offered me a full ride had an informational dinner one night in the spring. Considering my parents' financial difficulties, I decided to drive the 45 minutes and attend. At first, all I had planned to do was smile politely, eat free food, listen quietly. But I surprised myself.

At dinner the president of the university talked about the wonderful activities on campus(校园) including guest lectures and social gatherings. He also made it perfectly clear that free food would be offered at all future events. He continued with explanations of professors, class sizes, activities, and sporting events on campus. As he spoke. I began to realize that this school, though not as good as my first choice. might be the best one for me. It seemed small yet with many great programs. It seemed challenging yet caring.

As the president ended his speech, we clapped politely and pushed back our chairs. As I walked out that door, a feeling of comfort washed over me. Looking at the campus that night, I realized that I would be spending the next four years right there.

In all honesty, my university is not as well-known as my “dream” university. However, it turned out to be the right choice of schools for me.
