　　Man is a land animal, but he is also closely tied to the sea．Throughout history the sea has served the needs of man．The sea has provided man with food and a convenient way to travel to many parts of the world．Today, experts say that nearly two-thirds of the world's population lives within eighty kilometers of the seacoast．

　　In the modern technological world the sea offers many resources to help mankind live on．Resources on land are beginning to grow less．The sea, however, still offers hope to supply many of man's needs．

　　The riches of the sea yet to be developed by man's technology are impressive．Oil and gas exploration have existed for nearly thirty years．Valuable amounts of minerals such as, iron, copper(铜)and so on exist on the ocean floor, ready to be mined．

　　Fish farming promises to be a good way to produce large quantities of food．The culture of fish and shellfish is an ancient skill practiced in the past mainly by Oriental(东方的)peoples．

　　Besides oil and gas, the sea may offer new sources of energy．Experts believe that the warm temperature of the ocean can be used in a way similar to the steam in a steamship．Ocean currents and waves offer possible use as a source of energy such as hydroelectric(水力电气的)power．

　　Technology is enabling man to explore even deeper under the sea．The new undersea technology is providing divers with diving suits and undersea chambers(房屋)that are kept at sea level pressure．The development of strong, new materials has made this possible．

　　The technology to harvest the sea continues to improve．By the year 2000, experts believe that the problems to exploit the food, minerals, and energy sources of the sea will be largely solved．

　　How is the food in the future?People will have artificial food made from coal, limestone, air and water．Food chemists will blend these artificial things so skillfully that they will be delicious and also healthful．Because all the things that you need to live along will be put into it．And people may live to be a lot older than 100 years．

　　At work, robots will take over most jobs in the manufacturing industries．Working hours will fall to less than 10 hours a week．Holidays will get longer．Six months will be the annual holiday．The home will become the center of entertainment through television and electronic games．

　　Of course, traveling is a popular item in holidays, especially traveling to the space．Huge rocket liners take you into space to visit the Moon camp．After visiting the moon, you can visit the friends in Mars, Venus, Pluto, Jupiter, Mercury, Neptune, Uranus colony and even other heavenly body．

　　A little about a year ago I began training to swim the English Channel this September．I will be 58 years old then．

　　My friends thought that I had lost my mind; my wife, though not fearful for my sanity(神志清醒)，was somewhat worried．The question I was asked over and over was this：Why?

　　A challenge(挑战)and an element of adventure are welcome whether you are 20 or 50．

　　But why did I decide to swim the Channel at 58?

　　The Channel has always been the supreme challenge to swimmers; a test of ability, endurance, luck and even bravery．It is this challenge that is attractive to about 100 swimmers a year who are willing to spend time, effort and money to try it．

　　One fact that contributes to my interests is that if I succeed, I will be the oldest person ever to swim the Channel．

　　I don't think I'm a superman．I do think I have at least three things going for me：First, I am training hard．Second, I am a very goal-oriented person for whom this swim has long been a goal．Third, I have a feeling I will be mentally ready．

　　Efforts will be strengthened to effectively protect the cultural relics and properly maintain the historical sites in Beijing according to the“Cultural Relics Protection Plan for the Olympics in this Ancient Capital”, expressed by the Beijing Municipal Cultural Heritage Bureau(BMCHB)．This shall be done to demonstrate Beijing's history and traditional culture as well as to provide an Eastern atmosphere to the 2008 Olympic Games．

　　The plan for the protection of this famous historical and cultural city is to be improved．40 areas have been designated for historical and cultural protection．In and around those areas, the height, colors and other characteristics of new buildings shall be strictly controlled．With special renovation, Beijing will again take on the scene it once had, complete with its historical rivers and classical gardens．

　　Between 2002 and 2008 the renovation shall recover or restore Beijing's cultural relics in places named“two lines, five areas and six sites”．The“two lines”refer to the Middle Axis Avenue and the Chaobu Road．With all these, Beijing will achieve a presentation of its famous history and traditional culture．

　　The world's largest cultural relics salvation(救助)efforts are underway at the Yangtze River's Three Gorges, where the world's largest power project is being built．

　　In order to save the most important cultural relics before water storage of the power project in 2003, hundreds of archaeologists from 64 research institutes and universities across China gathered in the reservoir(水库)area, according to Tuesday's Beijing Daily．The investment in saving and protecting cultural relics at the Three Gorges will total over one billion yuan．

　　This winter, the excavation work focuses in Chongqing．More than 500 sites of relics and ancient tombs have been unearthed．

　　To the disappointment of the archaeologists, many ancient tombs have been destroyed by thieves．In the mid-1990s, a huge number of stolen relics were brought abroad and entered the international auction market．

　　Recently, a multilevel cultural relics protection network has been set up at the Three Gorges area．The stealing of cultural relics which was rampant(猖獗的)years ago has been basically controlled in this area．
