Many different kinds of birds can copy the sounds of language. African gray parrots are the birds best known for this.

Every December in London, the National Cage and Aviary Bird Show tries to find the besttalkingbird in the world. One bird named Prudle stood out among thetalking birds. She won this prize for 12 years in a row from 1965 to 1976

Prudle was taken from her nest in Uganda in 1958She was sold to Iris Frost in Seaford,England. Prudle knew almost 800 words in English.

Prudle was also the oldest bird in the world that lived in a cage. Ms. Frost took care of the bird until Prudle died in 1994Prudle was 35 years old.

Scientists used to explore(探测)on the surface of the ocean. Now they are exploring below the surface, too. They want to know about ocean water and the plant and animal life deep in the ocean.

In 1934 the scientist William Beebe dived 3000 feet below the surface in a hollow steel ball. In 1935 August Piccard dives 10300 feet. In 1960 his son Jean dived to a depth of 35800 feet.

All these early dives were deep. But the divers could not stay down for very long. They had to come back up to the surface after a few seconds. Scientists needed to stay down longer to study life below surface. Gradually they succeeded. Cousteau,a Frenchman, was able to keep men down to a depth of 26 feet for one month and to a depth of 90 feet for a week.

Now scientists are developing even better equipment. With this new equipment, men can stay below the surface for days or even weeks. In 1962 Cousteau set up a researeh station 35 feet below the surface. Then in l964 he set up another starion on the ocean floor of the Red sea. This was the first undersea station to operate without help from the surface.

Many countries are now studying undersea living. The former Soviet Union has an undersea laboratory in the Crimean Sea. The United Srates has a laboratory 50 feet down on the ocean floor off the Virgm Islands. In 1970 five men lived there for two weeks. Then a team of five women scientists stayed in the laboratory. Next Came other teams of men. All were there to explore the ocean depths and to make plans for the use of its resources. Scientists hope to find enough mineral, vegetable, and animal wealth. there to provide food for the entire world.

Take any long piece of paper. Now glue the ends of the paper together. You have made a ring.

Take a second long piece of paper. Twist(turn round)the paper once and glue the ends together. Now you have made a Mobius band. For people who study math, this band is special.

This strange band was first made in the 1800s by a German man named August Mobius. Mr Mobius studied math. He wanted to find a way to prove how this band works with math. Believe it or not, this band has only one surface. You can find t his out for yourself.

If you draw a line on the surface of the paper before you twist and glue it,the line is only on one side of the paper. The paper has two surfaces. However,if you draw a line after you make the Mobius band, you can follow the line around all sides of the paper. In other words, the Mobius band must have only one surface.

It is also kind of fun to see what happens when you cut the band. If you cut the Mobius band in half once down the line you dfew, you do not get two Mobius bands. Instead, after you cut the band,it turns into one large twisted ring. Then,if you cut this ring in half along the middle of the band again, you get two connected Mobius bands.

About 90 Indians also came to the meal. Everyone ate at tables outside their houses and played games together. The festival lasted three days.

A Thanksgiving Day celebration was held every year for a long time, but not always on the same day of the year. Then,in 1789,President George Washington named 26 November as the Day of Thanksgiving. This did not help to make him less lonely. He was new and he had to be tested. Still proving himself would not be all that easy. He did not want to run with bad boys or get into something against the law to prove that he was strong. No! He must show what he was made of in a more helpful way. That’s when he got an idea.

Decision-thinking is not unlike poker—it often matters not only what you think, but also what others think you think and what you think they think you think. The mental process (过程) is similar. Naturally, this card game has often been of considerable interest to people who are, by any standards, good thinkers.

The great mathematician John Von Neumann was one of the founders of game theory. In particular, he showed that all games fall into two classes: there are what he called games of “perfect information”, games like chess where the players can’t hide anything or play tricks: they don’t win by chance, but by means of logic and skills. Then there are games of “imperfect information”, like poker, in which it is impossible to know in advance that one course of action is better than another.

One mistaken idea about business is that it can be treated as a game of perfect information.  Quite the reverse. Business, politics, life itself are games which we must normally play with very imperfect information. Business decisions are often made with many unknown and unknowable factors (因素) which would even puzzle (困惑) best poker players. But few business people find it comfortable to admit that they are taking a chance, and many still prefer to believe that they are playing chess, not poker.

1.The subject discussed in this text is _______.

Athe process of reaching decisions

Bthe difference between poker and chess

Cthe secret of making good business plans

Dthe value of information in winning games

Betty and Harold have been married for years. But one thing still puzzles (困扰) old HarolDHow is it that he can leave Betty and her friend Joan sitting on the sofa, talking, go out to a ball game, come back three and a half hours later, and they’re still sitting on the sofa? Talking?

What in the world, Harold wonders, do they have to talk about?

    Betty shrugs.  Talk? We’re friends.

Researching this matter called friendship, psychologist Lillian Rubin spent two years interviewing more than two hundred women and men. No matter what their age, their job, their sex, the results were completely clear: women have more friendships than men, and the difference in the content and the quality of those friendships is “marked and unmistakable.”

More than two thirds of the single men Rubin interviewed could not name a best frienDThose who could were likely to name a woman. Yet three-quarters of the single women had no problem naming a best friend, and almost always it was a woman. More married men than women named their wife/husband as a best friend, most trusted person, or the one they would turn to in time of emotional distress (感情危机). “Most women,” says Rubin, “identified (认定) at least one, usually more, trusted friends to whom they could turn in a troubled moment, and they spoke openly about the importance of these relationships in their lives.”

In general, writes Rubin in her new book, “Women’s friendships with each other rest on shared emotions and support, but men’s relationships are marked by shared activities. ” For the most part, Rubin says, interactions (交往) between men are emotionally controlled  a good fit with the social requirements of "manly behavior.”

“Even when a man is said to be a best friend,” Rubin writes, “the two share little about their innermost feelings. Whereas a woman’s closest female friend might be the first to tell her to leave a failing marriage, it wasn’t unusual to hear a man say he didn’t know his frierld’s marriage was in serious trouble until he appeared one night asking if he could sleep on the sofa.”
