The first tape recorder didn’t use tape. It used long thin wire. It was invented in 1900 by Valdermar Poulsen. In 1930, German scientists invented the tape we use today. Back then the tape was on big rolls. In 1964 the Philips company in Holland invented the cassette. It’s pretty much a holder for the tape. People use cassettes all over the world. Whether its curled up(蜷缩) in the fetal position(胎儿状姿势), flat on the stomach or straighten your body across the bed, the way people sleep shows their personality(个性), a British sleep expert said.

Professor Chris Idzikowski, director of the Sleep Assessment at the University in Southern England, has discovered six common sleep positions and what they mean.

Bended in the fetal position is the most popular sleep pattern and loved by 51 percent of women, according to the results of the study he carried out for a large hotel group. Fetal sleepers tend to be shy and sensitive(敏感的). People, who have the soldier position—flat on their back with arms at their sides, are quiet and unfriendly.

Sleeping on ones side with legs outstretched(伸长) and arms down, is a sign of social, easy-going personality. But if the arms are outstretched, the person tends to be more disbelieving.

The freefall, flat on the stomach with the hands at the sides of the head, is the most unusual position. Only 6. 5 percent of people prefer it and they are usually in a hurry and sociable.

Modest, good listeners usually sleep in the starfish position—on the back with outstretched arms and legs.

Idzikowski, who discovered the positions by comparing personality of people, their preferred way of sleeping and the most common positions, said once a sleeping way is formed it is hardly ever changed.

“Whats interesting is that the profile(形象) behind the position is often very different from what we would expect, ”he added in a statement.

1. According to Professor Chris Idzikowski, from a persons sleeping position, you can__________.

A. know what he is interested in

B. understand what he usually means

C. tell what his character is like

D. guess what he usually thinks

2. A person who sleeps with his face up and arms at his sides__________.

A. seldom talks and is hard to get along with

B. is afraid to face strangers and is easily hurt

C. likes to make friends with others

D. hardly believes things and words from others

3. What Idzikowski said in the last paragraph means __________.

A. peoples sleeping way never changes

B. in real life people dont behave as their real personality

C. peoples sleeping position doesnt show their personality all the time

D. sleepers themselves always cant control their own sleeping position

4. The best title for this passage would be__________.

A. Six Sleeping Positions

B. Choose Your Best Sleeping Position

C. Sleeping Position Shows Personality

D. How to Sleep Well

Canadian millionaires Belinda Stronach lost her bid for the Conservative Party leadership on Saturday.

Economist Stephen Harper was chosen to lead the newly-merged right-wing party and will face off against Prime Minister Paul Martins liberals in the national election in  a few weeks time. He got 50 percent support, easily defeating Stronach and former Ontario cabinet minister Tony Clement.

But for the 37-year-old Stronach, heiress to the car parts giant Magna International, this is a beginning rather than an end. Despite being a newcomer to politics, she drew much attention during the campaign.

In 2002, Stronach was rated one of the worlds most powerful women by Fortune magazine with US $600 million to her name. At the time she was president and CEO of Magna International, the worlds seventh-biggest auto parts manufacturer, which was founded by her father.

Stronach first joined the company board aged 23. In 1990, she married Don Walker, her fathers former assistant, and the pair became Magnas power couple, with Walker rising to the rank of CEO in 1994. They had a son and daughter, now 12 and 10, before splitting in 1995.

Stronach has since married and divorced Johann Olav Koss, the Norwegian Olympic speedskater, and most recently was seen on the arm of former US president Bill Clinton providing tabloid gossip from Los Angeles to Frankfurt. Admirers describe Stronach as a younger, prettier version of Hillary Clinton.

Stronach replaced Walker as CEO in 2001 and became president of the company the following year. She resigned from both posts in January in order to compete for the leadership of the Conservative Party.

Stronachs defeat came despite spending millions of dollars on consultants and political advisers. But she says she will run for a seat in Parliament, ruling out both a return to Magna and a holiday.

1. How many people tried to win the bid for the Conservative Party leadership?
