Whether its curled up(蜷缩) in the fetal position(胎儿状姿势), flat on the stomach or straighten your body across the bed, the way people sleep shows their personality(个性), a British sleep expert said.

Professor Chris Idzikowski, director of the Sleep Assessment at the University in Southern England, has discovered six common sleep positions and what they mean.

Bended in the fetal position is the most popular sleep pattern and loved by 51 percent of women, according to the results of the study he carried out for a large hotel group. Fetal sleepers tend to be shy and sensitive(敏感的). People, who have the soldier position—flat on their back with arms at their sides, are quiet and unfriendly.

Sleeping on ones side with legs outstretched(伸长) and arms down, is a sign of social, easy-going personality. But if the arms are outstretched, the person tends to be more disbelieving.

The freefall, flat on the stomach with the hands at the sides of the head, is the most unusual position. Only 6. 5 percent of people prefer it and they are usually in a hurry and sociable.

Modest, good listeners usually sleep in the starfish position—on the back with outstretched arms and legs.

Idzikowski, who discovered the positions by comparing personality of people, their preferred way of sleeping and the most common positions, said once a sleeping way is formed it is hardly ever changed.

“Whats interesting is that the profile(形象) behind the position is often very different from what we would expect, ”he added in a statement.

1. According to Professor Chris Idzikowski, from a persons sleeping position, you can__________.

A. know what he is interested in

B. understand what he usually means

C. tell what his character is like

D. guess what he usually thinks

2. A person who sleeps with his face up and arms at his sides__________.

A. seldom talks and is hard to get along with

B. is afraid to face strangers and is easily hurt

C. likes to make friends with others

D. hardly believes things and words from others

3. What Idzikowski said in the last paragraph means __________.

A. peoples sleeping way never changes

B. in real life people dont behave as their real personality

C. peoples sleeping position doesnt show their personality all the time

D. sleepers themselves always cant control their own sleeping position

4. The best title for this passage would be__________.

A. Six Sleeping Positions

B. Choose Your Best Sleeping Position

C. Sleeping Position Shows Personality

D. How to Sleep Well

Prediction(预言) has always been a serious business. In the old days, astrologers(星占学家) were employed(从事于)to predict the future. Today futurologists(未来学家) make scientifically-based predictions which are taken seriously. Basically, the methods used in the past and those used today are similar. You look at what is happening at the present and then project(设想) into the future.

Take something like the motor-car, for example. Its obviously wasteful, noisy, dangerous, etc. So perhaps in the future it will have been replaced by something better. Projecting in the same way we can say that the common cold will have been cured, pollution will be got rid of,Antarctica will have been developed.money will have been replaced by credit cards, floating cities will have been built, the Jupiter(木星) will have been visited,a cure for cancer will have been discovered, the worlds mineral supplies will have been used up, and so on. Canadian millionaires Belinda Stronach lost her bid for the Conservative Party leadership on Saturday.

Economist Stephen Harper was chosen to lead the newly-merged right-wing party and will face off against Prime Minister Paul Martins liberals in the national election in  a few weeks time. He got 50 percent support, easily defeating Stronach and former Ontario cabinet minister Tony Clement.

But for the 37-year-old Stronach, heiress to the car parts giant Magna International, this is a beginning rather than an end. Despite being a newcomer to politics, she drew much attention during the campaign.

In 2002, Stronach was rated one of the worlds most powerful women by Fortune magazine with US $600 million to her name. At the time she was president and CEO of Magna International, the worlds seventh-biggest auto parts manufacturer, which was founded by her father.

Stronach has since married and divorced Johann Olav Koss, the Norwegian Olympic speedskater, and most recently was seen on the arm of former US president Bill Clinton providing tabloid gossip from Los Angeles to Frankfurt. People of Shanghai can quench their thirst(解渴) with high quality water if the Shanghai Water Authority(SWA) is able to make good on its word. It has promised to make the citys water match its status as a world-class city.

“The current(目前的) tap water quality meets national standards, but, compared with that of the European Union and the United States, it still needs to be improved, ”said the SWAs director general, Zhang Jiayi.

The Shanghai Special Water Supply Layout calls for residents to be able to drink the tap water without boiling it, in less than a decade. In most developed countries, water fountains can be found almost everywhere—people do not bother with bottled drinking water. By 2020, the water of Shanghai is supposed to be like that of developed countries. The water of the Huangpu River will be treated to reduce the amount of organic(有机的) waste in it. This action is to be completed in the first half of this year, Zhang said. Major water works that draw water from the Huangpu will need more treatment facilities to improve the color, texture(品质), ammonia() and nitrogen() content before 2010.

These treatment facilities are expected to cost 4 billion yuan, something that could affect the price of water, according to Chen Yin, SWAs deputy director general. Chen said that replacing water pipes was also a key project. The citys aged pipes are mostly to blame for the bad water quality.

The SWA has started the water facilities renovation(修复) work, including more than 14 000 kilometers of indoor piping, 107 000 tanks on top of buildings, and more than 6 000 underground facilities.

Buildings Full of Light

Roman buildings were popular only as long as builders were limited in how tall they could make a building. They had not learned how to support the walls of a tall building.

About 1140, a new kind of building appeared in Europe. These new buildings were churches, or cathedrals, and they were seen first in France. Today, these cathedrals are called Gothic(哥特式的) buildings. Their pointed arches(拱门) rise toward the sky. They look very different from the Roman buildings that have low arches and thick walls. Unlike the dark Pantheon(万神殿) all these buildings are full of light.

Builders of the Gothic cathedrals found a new way to build strong walls and tall arches. They built supports outside the building. These supports, called “flying buttress(扶壁) ”, helped hold the walls. Buttress made it possible to build high buildings.

One end of a narrow beam(栋梁), or the flying buttress, was planted away from the wall. The other end was placed high up on the wall. The flying buttress acted like a crutch(支柱).

Since these buildings had many windows, artists made pictures in them by using small pieces of colored glass held together with lead(). Sunlight shines through the glass and made soft splashes of color inside the churches. Stained(染色的) glass windows and flying buttresses were part of every Gothic cathedral.

A. they didnt want to use flying buttress

B. they didnt know how to support tall walls

C. they didnt need tall buildings

D. people liked low, round buildings better

2. The windows of Gothic cathedrals__________.

A. were made of colored glass

B. were very thick

C. were narrow and long

D. were like those in Roman buildings

3. We can infer from the passage that__________.

A. glass windows could support Gothic buildings

B. flying buttresses were only used to make the building more beautiful

C. tall buildings needed extra support for their walls

D. building Gothic cathedrals was an easy job

4. Which of the following is TRUE?

A. Roman buildings had no outside supports.

B. Roman buildings had large colored glass windows.

C. The walls of Roman buildings were not very thick.

D. Roman buildings looked much like Gothic buildings.

The opera house in Santa Fe, New Mexico, is one of the most beautiful in the United States. It is small and open, with one roof over the stage where singers perform and another roof over part of the audience. This opera house in the mountain is one of the best in the country, which may seem surprising because performances are only given during seven weeks in  summer, and because Santa Fe is a very small city.

One reason why the Santa Fe Opera is so good is that it attracts many excellent young singers. They all hope to sing in famous opera houses like Metropolitan in New York someday, and they work hard to become well-know during the summer. The musicians and directors are experts who come from the best orchestras(管弦乐队) and operas in the country during their vacations. They enjoy working there because they like to live in Santa Fe, which is near both the mountains and the desert. It is very beautiful there in summer.

The state government of New Mexico advertises the Santa Fe Opera in newspapers all over the country, and a great many tourists come to New Mexico because of the opera. Still, most of the audiences do come from Santa Fe and other nearby cities, and all the seats in the theater are sold for every show.

There is only one thing that some people do not like about the Santa Fe Opera, and that is the cold weather. Because the theater is open, performances cant start before it gets dark at nine oclock in the evening, and then the mountain air becomes very cool. Sometimes people complain about the cold air, but because the operas are good, these people come back again—wearing warm coats.

1. This passage mainly introduces__________.

A. mountain city                         B. young mountains

C. an opera house D. the tourism in Santa Fe

2. Young singers come to perform in Santa Fe Opera because__________.

A. the musics quality is high

B. they enjoy the climate there

C. they want to be famous

D. they like the scenery there

3. It seems surprising that Santa Fe becomes famous because__________.

A . it is only a very small place

B. it is between the mountain and desert

C. all the seats are sold for every show

D. musicians there are from the best orchestras

4. From the passage, we can learn that__________.

A. the opera house is open without any roofs

B. musicians always spend vacation in Santa Fe

C. the government advertises to attract more musicians

D. performances are held in Santa Fe only after sunset

Its only 34 centimeters tall but, as the highest honor in the world of cinema, an Oscar is worth its weight in gold.

Just saying its name draws up images of red carpets, bubbling champagne(冒泡的香槟), beautiful stars and, most importantly of all, success.

When the 76th Academy Awards were presented this morning in Los Angeles U. S. , the winners became headline news across the world just as the first Academy Awards. Organized by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the first Academy Awards ceremony took place at a Holly-wood hotel on May 16, 1929. All the guests knew who had won in advance; the present system of keeping it a secret until the envelope is opened was introduced in 1941.

The trophy(奖品) is the figure of a knight(骑士) holding a sword. The first awards were solid bronze but a metal shortage during World War Ⅱ meant the trophies were made of plaster(石膏) for a while. Nowadays, the figures are made of metal and given an outer coating of gold.

Officially known as the Academy Award of Merit, it isnt clear where the nickname(昵称) Oscar came from. One popular explanation is that an Academy librarian said it looked like her uncle Oscar and the name just stuck.

The timing of the ceremony has only been disturbed on three occasions. The first was in 1938 when serious floods in Los Angeles delayed the awards by one week. Then in 1968 the ceremony was moved from April 8 to April 10 out of respect for Dr. Martin Luther King, who had been assassinated (暗杀) a few days earlier. Another assassination—a failed attempt on President Ronald Reagan—saw the Oscars delayed by 24 hours in 1981.

1. When an actor/actress wins a reward of Oscar, he /she__________.

A. can receive a trophy made of pure gold

B. will receive many rewards

C. values the recognition of performance

D. knows it before the Awards ceremony takes place

2. The first Academy Awards ceremony took place on May 16, 1929, __________.

A. which many actors/actresses showed no interest in them

B. which was a shock to the world

C. which had all the well-known performers throughout the world

D. where each of the winners were given a sword

3. The Trophies were once made of plaster to__________.

A. cut costs

B. make them easy to keep

C. solve the problem of metal shortage

D. attract peoples attention

4. The latest delay of the ceremony was due to __________.

A. serious floods

B. the murder of Martin Luther King

C . a failed assassination on Ronald Reagan

D. some unknown reasons

5. When writing the passage, the author__________.

A. is dreaming of being a winner of Oscar

B. is trying to tell people more about the stories about Oscar

C. has found out how Oscar got its name

D. is not interested in the ceremony of Oscar

Beijing, Chinas cultural center is making its theatres and music halls more popular with ordinary people by reducing ticket prices and organizing more colorful performances.

Attending a performance or concert at weekends should no longer be a luxury, said Zhang Heping, director of the Beijing Municipal(市政府的) Cultural Bureau, at the government departments yearly work conference. Zhang put into a number of changes last year to increase audiences, such as designing some low-cost performances, the most popular of which was a show called“Open the Door of the Music”, aiming at students on summer vacation.

Previously, performances had tickets priced at above 100 yuan—more than one tenth of the average monthly salary of a Beijing resident. But the low-cost shows would limit prices between 5 yuan and 30 yuan.

Zhang said it was wrong to believe that few people remained interested in cultural performances. Tickets had simply been out of most peoples reach, Zhang said. More than 10 Beijing professional performance bodies have gradually been taken off government funding in recent years and have been left to fend for themselves. Zhang said“less profit, more audience”is better than“no profit and no audience”.

Beijing has planned to become an international city, but needs first-class cultural performances as well as firs-rate infrastructure(基础设施). Zhang also emphasizes the importance of large-scale activities, promising to organize more of them this year like open-air concerts performed by various amateur(业余) groups.

1. Beijing is making its theatres and music halls more popular with ordinary people because__________.

A. it agrees with the development of modern society

B. Beijing is trying its best to host the 2008 Olympic Games

C. people can enjoy themselves there without paying money

D. ticket prices are reduced and performances are more colorful

2. The underlined word “fend for” here means “__________”.

A. support                                B. search

C. promise                                 D. find

B. Making art more popular

C. Beijing is improving its infrastructure
