The Internet has created great changes in language learning. As English is the main language of science and technology, worldwide communications on the Internet are mainly conducted in the English language. In fact, the general dominance(统治)of the English on the Internet has worked to further encourage the learning and use of English, especially among those whose native language is not English.

Using the Internet for English teaching is very new. However, as a resource in the hands of a skilled teacher, the Internet can provide a wealth of materials with which the skilled teacher can build encouraging or productive activities.

For example, Internet resources can be used for class follow-up, discussing homework and giving writing assignments. The teacher can find and bring back some useful materials from the Net, and can even grade students' papers at home by just connecting to the Internet and grading students' E-mail messages.

Through booking electronic magazines, taking part in electronic discussion and attending conferences on the Internet, the teacher can share views and ideas with far-off colleagues quickly, easily and inexpensively. This is especially attractive and helpful for those in separated geographical areas

(1)The passage is mainly about ________.

[ ]

A.the Internet, a new technology in this century

B.a way that makes teaching and learning become easy

C.a new teaching and learning way offered by Internet

Let us say there is something you don't know how to do.

In the past if you were determined to learn, you might have called a friend or relative, taken a night class or walked down to the local library for a research term.

But now a host of websites(网站)are springing up to provide free practical advice on these subjects and actually anything else you can think of.

In one sense, these “how-to”sites represent a part of the growing world of online learning.

This tradition has found one of its earliest forms in the FAQs——or Frequently Asked Questions files(案卷)——that began on Usenet, the Internet's global discussion group.

These FAQs, many of which still circulate (go round continuously), took a specific subject and explained it to complete novices(初学者).

But“How-to”sites take the FAQ idea in a somewhat different direction by addressing subjects that aren't necessarily associated with discussion forums(论坛).

These sites take the style of a written tutorial(指南)and a tone of friendly advice.

Possibly the biggest and best known of these sites in learn 2.com(www.learn2.com). It offers nearly 1,000 free tutorials and adds new ones frequently for a job interview.

At ehow.com(www.ehow.com) you can learn how to train for your first marathon, how to buy a vacation home, or how to make a movie in eight steps.

(1)The passage wants to ________.

[ ]

A.introduce new websites to netizens(网民)

[ ]

A.explain FAQs to the public

Who is there among us who hasn't dreamed of having his or her own small (maybe, several years later, even big) business, and having wonderful freedom, both from a boss and from the time clock; the freedom to make up our own rules for our work, and our own plans——arranging our own hours of work? That way work would be both painless and fun. Or, so we imagine.

Well, in fact it isn't quite as simple as that. Yes, it is true that being the boss has its satisfactions and that you can arrange your working hours freely if you own your own small business. But in those early years of starting your own business, you shouldn't think of a free day, not to mention flying off for a month's vacation. It is not unusual for new business owners to work seventy or eighty hours a week, and if there is a day off, that day might need to be devoted to accounting(算帐).

But this negative picture doesn't destroy the beautiful hopes. The possibility of getting something wonderful in return——both material and mental——continues to drive that large number of people who start up small businesses each year in the United States.

(1)From the first paragraph, we know that everybody hopes ________.

[ ]

A.to rule others

B.to be his or her own boss

C.to get a time clock

D.to be free from work

(2)Most new business owners have to ________.

[ ]

A.work more than 10 hours a day

B.devote himself to accounting

C.fly to some places in the world

D.have a day off in a week

(3)The expression“negative picture”most probably means “________”.

[ ]

A.a terrible experience

B.a poor picture

C.limited freedom

D.unpleasant situations

(4)The beautiful hopes will never be destroyed because ________.

[ ]

A.people love beautiful things by nature

B.people have a strong desire to seek personal gains

C.small businesses make big money each year in the US

D.small businesses have advantages over big companies

It seems that some people go out of their way to get into trouble. That's more or less what happened the night that Nashville Police Officer Floyd Hyde was on duty.

“I was on the way to a personal-injury accident in West Nashville. As I got onto Highway 40, blue lights and sirens(警笛)going, I fell in behind a gold Pontiac Firebird that suddenly seemed to take off quickly down the highway. The driver somehow panicked at the sight of me. He was going more than a hundred miles an hour and began passing cars on the shoulder.”

But Hyde couldn't go after him. Taking care of injured people is always more important than worrying about speeders, so the officer had to stay on his way to the accident. But he did try to keep the Firebird in sight as he drove, hoping another nearby unit would be able to step in and stop the speeding car. As it turned out, keeping the Firebird in sight was not that difficult. Every turn the Pontiac made was the very turn the officer needed to get to the accident scene.

Hyde followed the Pontiac all the way to his destination (目的地). At that point he found another unit had already arrived at the accident scene. His help wasn't needed. Now he was free to try to stop the driver of the Firebird, who by this time had developed something new to panic about.

“Just about that time,”Hyde says,“I saw fire coming out from under that car, with blue smoke and oil going everywhere. He'd blown. his engine. Now he had to stop.”

“After I arrested him, I asked him why he was running. He told me he didn't have a driver's license(执照).”

That accident cost the driver of the Firebird plenty——a thousand dollars for the new engine-not to mention the charges for driving without a license, attempting to run away, and dangerous driving.

(1)The meaning of“panicked”in Paragraph 2 is related to ________.

[ ]

A.shame B.hate

C.anger D.fear

(2)Why did the driver of the Firebird suddenly speed down the highway?

[ ]

A.Because he was racing with another driver on the road.

B.Because he realized he had to hurry to the accident scene.

C.Because he thought the police officer wanted to stop him.

D.Because he wanted to overtake other cars on the shoulder.

(3)Which of the following statements is true?

[ ]

A.Someone else was taking care of the injured person.

B.The Pontiac reached its destination at the accident scene.

C.Hyde knew where he was going by following the right car.

D.The policeman was running after a speeder on Highway 40.

(4)The driver of the Firebird ________.

[ ]

A.took a wrong turn on the way

B.had some trouble with his car

C.was stopped by the police officer

D.paid for the expenses of the accident

(5)What is probably the best title for the article?

[ ]

A.Losing His Way

B.Going My Way

C.Fun All the Way

D.Help on the Way

Calendars

Many people take for granted the fact that January 1,2000 marks the beginning of a new century for all mankind. However, this day does not have the same meaning everywhere in the world. Where did the date 2000 come from? Around 500 A.D., a leading religious man suggested that all Christians should start counting the date from the birth of Christ. After careful calculations, the year 1 A.D.(Christ's birth)was said to be the 28th year after Augustus became the emperor of Rome. Today, this calculation seems to be incorrect. Historians believe that Christ was actually born four years before this date, but changing the calendar now would only cause confusion around the world because most people are used to the current calendar.

There are several other major calendars used for calculating the date The Jewish calendar calculates the date from the day the earth was created. In 1000 B.C., Jewish scholars set the date the earth began, and according to this calendar, the year2000 A.D. would actually be 5760. The Buddhist calendar begins from the death of Buddha, so the year 2000 A.D. for Christians will be 2544 for Buddhists. Muslims start their calendar from the time when the Prophet Muhammad escaped from Mecca and went to Medina. The Muslim calendar also follows the moon instead of the sun, so the Muslim year is 10 or 11 days shorter than the Christian year. The year 2000 A.D. is really 1420 for Muslims. The official Hindu calendar, which was put into use in the 1950s, begins from the first year that King Kaniska took power in India. When Christians celebrate the year 2000 A.D., it will only be the year 1922 for Hindus.

Not all calendars set the date by historical or religious events. One other system used for calculating the date was created by the astronomer Joseph Scaliger in the1500s. For astronomers, one year is a very short time when looking at the movement of planets and stars. Therefore, Mr. Scaliger suggested using a time period for his calendar that would equal 7,980 years. The dates of the calendar are calculated by dividing one 7,980-year cycle of this calendar into smaller periods. These periods are more convenient for following the movements of the sun and the moon. Mr. Scaliger picked out the starting point of one of these cycles as January 14,713 B.C. In 2000 A.D. this calendar will set the date as 2,451,545.

(1)Historians now believe that Christ was born ________.

[ ]

A. before Augustus became emperor

B. 24 years after Augustus became emperor

C. in 1 A.D.

D. in the year 2000 A.D.

(2)What marks the beginning of the Jewish calendar?

[ ]

A. the birth of Muhammad

B. the death of Buddha

C. the beginning of the earth

D. the lunar cycle

(3)Why did Mr. Scaliger need to create a new calendar for keeping track of the movement of planets?

[ ]

A. History is very short.

B. Planets are too big.

C. Light travels too fast

D. Years are too short.

(4)The second paragraph is mainly about ________.

[ ]

A. how to measure time

B. many different calendars

C. major religions of the world

D. King Kaniska
