In the Ituri forest of America live many tribes(部落), one of which is Pygmy. Most of the Pygmies in the tribe are not taller than four feet. They weigh only about eighty pounds each.

In spite of their small size, they are the best hunters among all the jungle people. Even the great elephant can be caught by them. They can shoot three or four arrows so rapidly that often the last one Leaves the bow before the first has hit its mark. If an arrow should miss its aim, the impatient Pygmy may become very angry, breaking his arrows and stepping on them.

Since they do not plant any crops, Pygmies are constantly moving around. They seldom sleep in one camp for more than a few days. In their camps there is not furniture at all except for some weapons such as spears, bows and arrows. There are no cooking pots either. Food is eaten uncooked or smoked over a fire. So when the tribe moves to a new camp there is nothing to carry except these weapons and babies too small to walk.

Pygmies can move on the tree tops almost as skillfully as monkeys. Often they travel great distances through the branches without touching the ground.

One of the surprising facts about these small men and women is their great appetite(食欲). A Pygmy can eat up sixty bananas at a single meal besides quantities of meat. After eating, they will lie on their hard earth bed and groan(呻吟)in all night. But in the morning, they are ready to eat the same amount of food or fight among themselves.

“Creativity(创造性) is the key to a brighter future,”say education and business experts. Here is how schools and parents can encourage this important skill in children.

If Dick Drew had listened to his boss in 1925, we might not have a product that we now think of as of great importance: a new type of tape. Drew worked for the Minnesota Mining Company. At work he developed a kind of material strong enough to hold things together. But his boss told him not to think more about the idea. Finally, using his own time, Drew improved the tape, which now is used everywhere by many people. And his former company learned from its mistake. Now it encourages people to spend 15 percent of their work time just thinking about and developing new ideas.

Creativity is not something one is just born with, nor is it necessarily a character of high intelligence(智力). The fact that a person is highly intelligent does not mean that he uses it creatively. Creativity is the matter of using the resources one has to produce. new ideas that are good for something.

Unfortunately, schools have not tried to encourage creativity. With strong attention to test results and the development of reading, writing and mathematical skills, many educators give up creativity for correct answers. The result is that children can give back information but can't recognize ways to use it in new situation. They may know the rules correctly but they are unable to use them to work out practical problems.

It is important to give children choice. From the earliest age, children should be allowed to make decisions and understand their results. Even if it's choosing between two food items for lunch, decision-making helps thinking skills. As children grow older, parents should let their children decide how to use their time or spend their money. This is because the most important character of creative people is a very strong desire to find a way out of trouble.

(1)What did the company where Drew once worked learn from its mistake?

[ ]

A.They encouraged people to work a longer time.

B.They discouraged people to think freely.

C.They asked people to spend all their work time developing new ideas.

D.They encouraged people to spend some of their work time considering and improving new ideas.

(2)Creativity is something ________.

[ ]

A.that people are born with

B.that depends on intelligence

C.that is way of using what one has learned to work out new problems

D.that is not important at all

(3)Why don't schools try to encourage creativity?

[ ]

A.They don't understand the importance of education.

B.They don't want their students to make mistakes.

C.They pay too much attention to exam marks, language and mathematical skills

D.They think it more important to remember some information

(4)Why is it necessary to give children choices at the early age?

[ ]

A.They can choose between two food items.

B.They can learn how to make decision and understand their results.

C.They can do whatever they want.

D.They will get rid of their parents' control.

Stars have been significant(有意义的)features in the design of many United States coins and their number has varied from one to forty-eight stars. Most of the coins issued(发行)from about 1799 to the early years of the twentieth century bore thirteen stars reprinting the thirteen original colonies(殖民地).

Curiously enough, the first American silver coins, issued in 1749, had fifteen stars because by that time Vermont and Kentucky had joined the Union. At that time it was apparently the intention of mint(铸)officials to add a star for each new state. Following the admission of Tennessee in 1796, for example, some varieties of half dimes, dimes and half-dollars were produced with sixteen stars.

As more states were admitted to the Union, however, it quickly became apparent that this scheme(方案) would not prove practical and the coins from 1798 on were issued with only thirteen stars one for each of the original colonies. Due to an error at the mint, one variety of the 1808 half cent was issued with only twelve stars. But this is the result of a die(模具)break and is not a true error.

(1)What is the main topic of the passage about?

[ ]

A.The teaching of astronomy in state universities.

B.Stars on American coins.

C.Colonial stamps and coins.

D.The star as national symbol of the United States.

(2)Which of the following can be inferred about the order in which Kentucky, Tennessee, and Vermont joined the Union?

[ ]

A.Vermont and Kentucky joined at the same time.

B.Kentucky joined before Tennessee and Vermont.

C.Tennessee joined after Tennessee and Kentucky.

D.Vermont joined after Tennessee and Kentucky.

(3)Why was a coin produced in 1808 with only twelve stars?

[ ]

A.There were twelve states at the time.

B.There was a change in design policy.

C.Tennessee had left the Union.

D.The mint made a mistake.

(4)Which of the following best describes the organization of the passage?

[ ]

A.A narrative account of coinage.

B.An argumentative discussion of stars on the U.S. coins.

C.A general statement followed by specific examples.

D.According to the time arrangement.

For many people today, reading is no longer relaxation. To keep up with their work they must read letters, reports, trade publications, interoffice communications: a never-ending flood of words. In getting a job or dealing with affair, the ability to read and comprehend quickly can mean the difference between success and failure. Yet the unfortunate fact is that most of us are poor readers.

Most reading faults can be traced to early school training. According to Dr. Betts, two persons out of five in school were forced to read material too difficult for them to understand at the time, a frustrating(令人沮丧的)experience which left them with bad reading habits.

Fortunately, almost anyone can learn to read faster and with more comprehension. Age makes little difference. According to a recent study of 138 students at The Reading laboratory, Inc, all age groups showed a marked increase in reading rate after training ——from 93 percent for the 50~90 age group to 99.4 percent for the 20~29 age group. Dr. Mila Banton Smith, director of New York University's Reading Institute, says that the average adult student, in 28 training hours, nearly triples(三倍的) his reading speed and boosts(增长)his comprehension by about 30 percent.

The best way to improve your reading, of course, is to enroll (登记)in a reading clinic. If there's no clinic handy(手边的) or you can improve your reading ability yourself——provided you have no eyes trouble. (If reading tired you easily or makes your eyes or head ache, you should consult a doctor.)

(1)To many people today, ________.

[ ]

B.a frustrating experience

C.made by reading difficult materials

D.made by reading careless

(3)Who can learn to read fast and with comprehension?

[ ]

A.Teachers only B.Students only

C.A few people D.Almost everybody

(4)According to the passage, what is the best way to improve one's reading?

In Europe, many people make friends across the borders between their countries through town twinning. Town or city twinning means two towns in different countries agree and decide to become“twins”with sister city relationship.

Their citizens find pen friends in the twin town. They exchange newspapers and stamps. The school teachers discuss teaching methods with the teachers in the twin town. Officials visit the twin town for celebrations. Ordinary citizens travel to the twin town, too, but not very often if it is far away.

Sometimes, schools even exchange their classes for two or three weeks! For example, German middle school students study for a while at the school in their twin town in Britain, staying with British families. A few months later, their British friends come to study in Germany.

Some towns even arrange exchange visits for theatre groups, choirs(歌唱队) and orchestras(管弦乐队). Others send lecturers to the twin town who tell the people there all about their own town, and show photos and slides.

Some towns organize exhibitions to show works of art, for example paintings by artists from their twin town.

Tonbridge, a medium-sized town in Kent, for example, has twin towns in both Germany and France. Richmond near London has links with Germany, France and even a town in a Balkan(巴尔干岛)country!

Town twinning can help making friends and motivates (促进)people to learn from each other. It helps students to improve their language skills, and it contributes to promoting and strengthening peace and understanding between different nations.
