All I used to do all day was eat, sleep, and walk back and forth. There was nothing to scratch, no toys to play with, and no one to pet me.

Then Squirt and her family came by my cage. Squirt stopped and scratched my head. She asked my name. I told her it was “Mowr”She called me“Tag”, but I didn't mind.

Each person in Squirt's family seems to have two names. One person is called“Peter”or“Peanut”. Another person is called“Honey”or“Daddy”. That person picked me up and put me in a box.

When I was in the box, I heard a roaring sound. Suddenly, I was rocking from side to side. I felt sick, so I made some weak mewing sounds.

Finally, the rocking stopped. Squirt opened my box and smiled. I wobbled out to my new home.

Thinking of my new life makes me purr. I have my own food dish and a mouse made of cloth. All I have to do is meow and someone will play with me.

In the 1940's, Pinehaven Park was one of Crafton City's loveliest recreation(娱乐)areas. Over 40 acres(英亩)of woods and fields were open to the public. In the 1950's, part of the park was taken over by Crafton City's garbage(垃圾). Fifteen acres were to be used for landfill disposal(处理). As time went on, more and more of the park was used for garage disposal and less for recreation. Two years ago, the park was closed to the public for good. Along with household garbage, industrial chemicals had for years been dumped(倾倒)in the Pinehaven landfill. These poisonous chemicals had begun to seep(渗、漏) back up through the soil. All of Pinehaven Park had become dangerously polluted.

Last year, the fish in the Crafton River began to die. After a series of investigations(研究), it became clear that the people of Crafton City were not to blame. 100——150 miles upstream(在上游), big paper mills were dumping industrial wastes into the river. Little by little, the level of poison in the river began to rise. Finally, it became so polluted that the fish themselves could no longer survive.

Downtown Crafton used to be a quiet area. Ten years of remarkable growth changed that in a big hurry. But with Crafton City's new prosperity(繁荣)came a new problem: air pollution. And it is a serious problem. Air pollution levels in Crafton are regularly reaching those of the nation's large industrial cities.

(1)Which of the following best states the central idea of the passage?

[ ]

A.Chemical dumping is a serious threat to Crafton City's soil.

B.The rapid growth of industry has brought air pollution to Crafton City.

D.Industrial growth and progress have resulted in the pollution of Crafton City's water, air, and soil.

(2)According to the passage, what portion of the park had originally been marked for use as a garbage dump?

[ ]

A.Less than half. B.Exactly half.

C.Three quarters. D.Most of it.

(3)As it is used in the passage, the phrase“for good”means ________.

(4)According to the passage, one result of dumping industrial chemicals into the landfill was that ________.

[ ]

A.the land became unsafe for humans

B.the animals on the land died

C.the poisonous chemicals were washed into the nearby river

D.the smoke from the chemicals polluted the air surrounding the landfill

Tim Berners-Lee is the man who wrote the software program that led to the foundation of the World Wide Web. Britain played an important part in developing the first generation of computers. The parents of Tim Berners-Lee both worked on one of the earliest commercial(商业)computers and talked about their work at home. As a child he would build models of computers from packaging material. After graduating from Oxford University he went on to the real thing. In the 1980's scientists were already communicating using a primitive version of e-mail. While working at a lab in Switzerland Tim Berners-Lee wrote a program, which let him store these messages. This gave him another idea that he was going to write a program that would let academics(学术界人士)from across the world share information on a single site. In 1990 he wrote the HTTP and HTML programs, which formed the basis of the World Wide Web.

The next year his programs were placed on to the Internet. Everyone was welcome to use them and improve them if they could. Programs used his codas to work with different operating systems. New things like web browsers and search engines were developed. Between 1991 and 1994 the number of web pages rose from 10 to 100,000.

In 1994 Tim Berners-Lee formed the newly World Wide Web consortium(协会), or W3C. More than 200 leading companies and labs are represented by W3C. Together they make sure that everyone can participate equally on the Web.“The Web can help people to understand the way that others live and work. Before a new airliner goes into service, every part of it is tested again and again. But there are two tests more important than all the others. One of them is very strange and the other is very dangerous.

The first of these is called the“tank test”. A modern airliner must fly at very high altitudes. Air must be pumped into the plane so that the passengers can breathe. The metal structure of the plane has to be very strong for this reason. When the plane is filled with air, or“pressurized”, the air presses against the skin of the plane inside. The pressure on a small window, for example, is like a huge, giant foot that is trying to get out. If a small part of the plane were to crack, the plane would explode in the sky. This is what happened to the first Comets(彗星). In order to test the structure of the plane, it is lowered into a huge tank of water. Then it is filled with air. The pressure inside the plane is greater than it ever will be when it is in the air. Finally, there is an explosion. This does not cause so much damage inside the water tank as it would anywhere else. Engineers can discover which part of the plane has cracked. This part will be made stronger.

The most dangerous test happens when the new plane is going through test flight in the air. The test pilot must find out exactly what happens when the engines are all shut off at once. He takes the plane up very high. Then he shuts the engines off. The plane begins to fall like a stone. It is the pilot's job to find out how he gets control of the plane again. These two tests are examples of how planes are made safe before they ever carry passengers.

(1)The purpose of the tank test is to find out ________.

[ ]

A.how much air can be pumped into a plane

B.how much air passengers need to breathe at certain altitudes

C.what would happen if the plane crashed in the water

D.if there are any weak parts in the plane that would burst under pressure

(2)The test is carried out under water because ________.

[ ]

A.the pressure of water is greater than air

B.the first Comets crashed in the water

C.there is less damage when the explosion happens under water

D.this is the only way engineers can find out which part has cracked

(3)Why the second important test which the author refers to is mast dangerous one is probably that ________.

[ ]

A.the metal structure of the plane is not very strong

B.the new plane will explode in the sky

C.the test pilot does not know how to get control of the plane

D.the plane begins to fall like a stone

(4)This passage is mainly about ________.

[ ]

A.the plane structure

B.the first Comets

C.the way of pumping air into the plane

D.two important tests

Complaining(抱怨)about faulty goods or bad service is never easy. Most people dislike making a fuss(大惊小怪). But if something you have bought is faulty or does not do what is instructed for it, you are not asking for a favor to get it put right. It is the shopkeeper's responsibility(负责) to take the complaint seriously and to replace or repair a faulty article or put right poor service, because he is the person with whom you have entered into an agreement. When I was in Scotland last year, I visited a special hydroelectric power station. It is inside a mountain. It rains a lot in the mountains of Scotland and there are huge lakes high up. The water falls down through large pies to a generator in the power station. The energy of the moving water turns the generator and this produces electricity. A big transformer then increases the number of volts(伏特) to over 4000000. The electricity goes through cables to different parts of Scotland, England and Wales.

The inside of the power station was very clean because it doesn't burn coal or gas. It was just like being in a hospital, really.

I think hydroelectric power stations are much safer than nuclear power stations. They are also better for the earth than coal or gas power stations. Some countries like Sweden and the Netherlands have said they aren't to build any more nuclear power stations. They are going to try to make clean electricity using water or wind. I think we should do the same and spend more money in building hydroelectric power stations.

(1)What can be the best title for the passage?

[ ]

A.Future if Electricity

B.Dangers of Nuclear Power

C.Electricity in Scotland

D.Electricity from Water

(2)We can learn that the underlined word“hydroelectric”means “using________.”

A.the energy of the water to clean the air

B.waterpower to produce electricity

C.pipes to carry water

D.wind-power to produce electricity
