Every human being, no matter what he is doing, gives off body heart. The usual problem is how to get rid of it. But the designers of the Johnstown campus of the University of Pittsburgh set themselves the opposite problem--how to collect body heat. They have designed a collection system which uses not only body heat, but the heat given off by such objects as light bulbs and refrigerators as well. The system works so well that no fuel is needed to make the campus's six building comfortable.

Some parts of most modern buildings--theaters and offices as well as classrooms--are more than sufficiently (足够) heated by people and lights and sometimes must be air-conditioned even in winter. The technique of saving heat and redistributing it is called“heat recovery”. A few modern buildings recover heat, but the University's system is the first to recover heat from buildings and reuse it in others.

Along the way, Pitt has learned a great deal about some of its producers. The harder a student studies the more heat his body gives off. Male students send out more heat than female students, and the larger a student, the more heat he produces. It is tempting to conclude that the hottest prospect for the Johnstown campus would be a hard-working overweight male genius.

1.Which of the following is true of the heating system of the Johnstown campus? The heat is supplied by _____.

[ ]

A.human bodies, other heat sending objects, and fuel

B.both human Bodies and other heat sending objects

C.both human bodies and fuel

D.human bodies

2.The technique of heat recovery is used _____.

[ ]

A.to produce a special form of air-conditioning

B.to provide heat for the hot water system

C.to find out the source of heat

D.to collect and reuse heat

3.Which of the following persons would produce the least amount of heat?

[ ]

A.A thin male who studies hard.

B.A fat female who studies hard.

C.A fat male who does not study hard.

D.A thin female who does not study hard.

4.The words“the hottest prospect”(last paragraph) refer to _____.

[ ]

A.the person who suffers most from heat

B.the person who produces most heat

C.the person who uses most heat

D.the person who takes in heat

The Galapage, a faraway archipelago(群岛) and largely untouched by man, is now facing a problem. Its local people, who live on the island of Santa Cruz, want to develop the business and tourist potential (旅游资源) of the island. Recently, they are locked in a bitter struggle with the naturalists who work at the Charles Darwin Centre, also on Santa Cruz. The naturalists want to protect the island's wildlife which is already suffering as a result of human activity.

The animals' great threat used to be sailors who, hundreds of years ago, robbed the islands for food. They wiped out about 250,000 Giant Tortoises. For example on Pinta, one of the smallest islands, there are no Giant Tortoises left at all. The last survivor, an 80-year-old Giant Tortoise called Lonesome George, lives under the protection of naturalists at the Darwin Center.

Today, the island's animals are no longer hunted for food. But other dangers have replaced the threat from sailors. Goats, for example, introduced over the years by man, have gone wild. With no natural enemies, their numbers have reached 100,00 on the largest of the Galopagos islands, Isabella. They are eating huge quantities of plants, and robbed the remaining Giant Tortoise of food. The problem is now so bad that the National Park Service has hired hunters to kill the goats in order to save the Giant Tortoise from dying out.

1.Today, you can find the Giant Tortoise on the island of _____.

[ ]

A.Santa Cruz B.Pinta

C.Isabella D.Galapagos

2.Which of the following shows the right relationship between the Galapagos, Isabella, Pinta and Santa Cruz?

[ ]

A.The Galapagos>Pinta>Isabella>Santa Cruz.

B.Isabella>Santa Cruz>the Galapagos>Pinta.

C.The Galapagos>Isabella>Santa Cruz>Pinta.

D.Isabella>the Galapagos>Pinta>Santa Cruz.

3.We can learn from the article the greatest danger to the Giant Tortoises is from _____.

[ ]

A.sailors B.hunters

C.goats D.the local people

4.From the first paragraph we can infer that _____.

[ ]

A.the naturalists try to help the local people with their interest

B.the local people pay more attention to the economic growth than the wildlife there

C.the animals and plant are of great importance to the local

D.the naturalists don't care about the local people at all

When humans and nature go head to head, nature often ends up losing. Rivers get polluted. Trees are knocked down. Natural resources are exhausted. That's what makes the Galapagos Islands so special--it's one of the few pristine (原始状态的) places on Earth that nature can truly call its own.

For people used to having wild animals run at the scent of humans, a visit to the Galapagos is a real eyeopening experience. Over 1,600km west of Ecuador (厄瓜多尔), the islands are home to a unique variety of animals that have absolutely no fear of people. Visitors can play on the beach with sea lions and giant sea turtles, swim with dolphins and whales, and get close enough to the penguins (企鹅) to count the eggs in their nests.

The islands were declared a national park over 40 years ago, and the number of human visitors is tightly limited to avoid damaging the environment or putting stress on the animals. Tourists have to pay a $100 daily visitors fee, and can't step off the boat unless accompanied (陪同) by an official guide. Once on the islands, you have to stay on the trail, but that rarely presents a problem: the animals are so curious about people that they'll usually come up to say hello.

“It's a little like being in a zoo,”said one traveler.“But instead of us looking at the animals, the animals are looking at us.”

Aside from the wildlife, one of the islands' more unusual features is its post office. You can send postcards for free, but the catch is that there's no postman to collect them. Instead, travelers pick up mail addressed to people who live near them back home, and then hand-deliver the postcards when their trip is finished.

1.The Galapagos Islands are _____.

[ ]

A.terribly polluted B.near Ecuador

C.in the Atlantic Ocean D.independent of Ecuador

2.Which animal is NOT mentioned in the passage?

[ ]

A.Whales. B.Sea lions.

C.Goats. D.Dolphins.

3.On the Galapagos Islands the mail is delivered by _____.

[ ]

A.the government B.the post office

C.the tourists D.the guides

4.What would be the best title for the passage?

[ ]

A.The Islands Galapagos B.Humans and Nature

C.Go Head to Head D.Ecuador--An Island Country

Museums have changed. They are no longer places that one “should”go but to enjoy.

At a science museum in Canada, you can feel your hair stand on end as harmless electricity passes through your body. At the Children's Museum in New York, you can play an African drum. There are no“Do Not Touch”sign in some. other museums in the USA.

More and more museum directors have realized that people learn best when they can become part of what they are seeing. In many science museums, the visitors are encouraged to touch, listen, operate and experiment so as to discover scientific rules for themselves.

The purpose is not only to provide fun, but also help people feel at home in the world of science. If people don't understand science, they will be afraid of it; and if they are afraid of science, they will not make the best use of it.

One cause of all these changes is the increase in wealth and spare time. Another cause is the growing number of young people in the population. Many of them are college students of college graduates. They see things in a new and different way. They want art that they can take part in. The same is true of science and history.

The old museums have been changing and the government is encouraging the building of new, modem museums. In the States and Canada, there are more than 6000 museums, almost twice as many as there were 25 years ago.

In the 1940s, Pinehaven Park was one of Crafton City's loveliest recreation(娱乐)areas. Over 40 acres of woods and fields were open to the public. In the 1950s, part of the park was taken over by Crafton City's garbage. Fifteen acres were to be used for landfill disposal(理置). As time went on, more and more of the park was used for garage disposal and less for recreation. Two years ago, the park was closed to the public for good. Along with household garbage, industrial chemicals had for years been dumped (倾倒)in the Pinehaven landfill. These poisonous chemicals had begun to seep(渗)back up through the soil. All of Pinehaven Park had become dangerously polluted.

Last year, the fish in the Crafton River began to die. After a series of investigations(研究), it became clear that the people of Crafton City were not to blame. 100~150 miles upstream, big paper mills were dumping industrial wastes into the river. Little by little, the level of poison in the river began to rise. Finally, it became so polluted that the fish themselves could no longer survive.

Downtown Crafton used to be a quiet area. Ten years of remarkable growth changed that in a big hurry. But with Crafton City's new prosperity(繁荣)came a new problem: air pollution. And it is a serious problem. Air pollution levels in Crafton are regularly reaching those of the nation's large industrial cities.

A.Chemical dumping is a serious threat to Crafton City's soil.

B.The rapid growth of industry has brought air pollution to Crafton City.

C.The disposal of garbage can destroy recreation areas.

D.Industrial growth and progress have resulted in the pollution of Crafton City's water, air, and soil.

(2)According to the passage, what portion of the park had originally been marked for use as a garbage dump?

[ ]

A.Less than half B.Exactly half

(4)According to the passage, one result of dumping industrial chemicals into the landfill was that ________.

[ ]

A.the land became unsafe for humans

B.the animals on the land died

C.the poisonous chemicals were washed into the nearby river

D.the smoke from the chemicals polluted the air surrounding the landfill

About 200 million years ago, as the Triassic Period(三叠记)came to a close, many species of animals disappeared from the face of the Earth. Scientists had believed that the series of extinctions(灭绝)happened over a period of 15 to 20 million years. Recent discoveries in Nova Scotia suggest, however, that the extinctions may have happened over a much shorter period of time, perhaps less than 850,000 years.

Evidence for a rapid extinction of species at the end of the Triassic Period is Found in the McCoy Brook Formation along the Bay of Fundy in Nova Scotia. Fossils(化石)found in this formation indicate a rapid disappearance of species rather than a slow and gradual change over time. One explanation for a relatively sudden extinction at the end of the Triassic may be that a large meteorite(陨石)struck the earth tit the time and was responsible for a 70-kilometer hole nearby. If geologists and other researchers can find evidence, such as shocked quartz(石英)in the rock formations, that a meteorite did strike the earth, it would give more credence to the theory of rapid Triassic extinctions. It is possible, however, that even if a rapid extinction happened in and around Nova Scotia, it did not necessarily occur in the rest of the world.

(1)What is the main topic of this passage?

[ ]

A.The disappearance of animal species at the end of the Triassic Period.

B.Evidence of a relatively sudden extinction of species

C.The possibility of an extinction happening over a period of 15 to 20 million years.

[ ]

A.emphasize the disappearance

B.focus on one part of the Earth

C.focus on one period of time

D.point out the reference to land, not water

(3)According to the passage, what is the evidence that a meteorite struck the earth?

[ ]

A.A gradual change in species over time.

B.A change in the quartz.

C.Gold deposits in the veins of rocks.

D.A change in the waters of the Bay of Fundy.

(4)Which of the following best describes the author's tone?
