Having returned from her round trip, the angry woman stood outside the ticket office of the station.“The railway owes me £12,”she said to Harry Jenks, the young man working at the office.“You sold me a ticket for May 22nd,but there was no ship from Jersey that night. So my daughter and I had to stay in a hotel. It cost me £12.”
Harry was worried. He remembered selling the woman a return ticket.“Come into the office,Madam,”he said politely.“I'll just check the Jersey timetable for May 22nd.”
The woman and her little girl followed him inside. She was quite right, as Harry soon discovered. There was no sailing on May 22nd. How could he have made such a careless mistake? He shouldn't have sold her a ticket for that day. Wondering what to do, he smiled at the child.“You look sunburnt,”he said to her.“Did you have a nice holiday in Jersey?”
“Yes,”she answered, shyly.“The beach was lovely. And I can swim too!”
“That's fine.”said Harry.“My little girl can't swim a bit yet. Of course, she's only three….”
“I'm four,”the child said proudly.“I'll be four and a half.”
Harry turned to the mother.“I remember your ticket, Madam,”he said.“But you didn't get one for your daughter, did you?”
“Er, well…”the woman looked at the child.“I mean…she hasn't started school yet. She's only four.”
“A four-year-old child must have a ticket, Madam. A child's return ticket to Jersey costs…let me see… £13.50. So if the railway pays your hotel, you will owe £1.50. The law is the law, but since the fault was mine….”

In the past, Americans used to think of the United States as a“melting pot”of immigrants(移民) from many different cultures to the United States, their old ways melted away and they became part of a completely new culture. The United States was likened to a big pot of soup, which had bits of flavor(味道,滋味) from each different culture. All of the different cultures were so well blended(混合,掺杂) together that it formed its own new flavor.
Today, Americans realize that the simple“melting pot”theory is less true. Instead, different groups of people keep many of their old customs. Often groups of Americans from the same culture band together. They live together in distinctive communities, such as“Chinatowns”or“Little Italy”--areas populated almost exclusively(惟一,仅) by Americans of a single ethnic group--which can be found in many large American cities. Living in ethnic neighborhoods gives new Americans the security of sharing a common language and common traditions with people who understand them.
In time, however, people from different backgrounds mix together. They also mix with native-born Americans. Old traditions give way to new customs. The children of immigrants are often eager to adopt new, American ways. They often want to dress in American fashions, to speak English and to follow American social customs. By one estimate(估计), about 80 percent of European immigrants marry outside their own ethnic groups by the time they reach the third generation. Third generation means that their great-grandparents were immigrants. Yet as successive generations become more“Americanized”, they often retain significant elements of their ethnic heritage.
1.What does the text mainly talk about?
[ ]
A.The American way of life.
B.Immigrants vs.native-born Americans.
C.Old traditions vs.new customs.
D.The multi-cultural heritage of the United States.
2.Why does the author mention“Chinatowns”in the 2nd paragraph?
[ ]
A.To give an example that many people keep their old customs.
B.To show that Chinese cherish their old traditions.
C.To contrast(对比) the Chinese way of life with that of the Italian's.
D.To give an example of the Americanization(美国化).
3.The underlined word“ethnic”in the last sentence most probably means _____.
[ ]
A.moral B.national
C.cultural D.social
4.The underlined word“Americanized”generally means _____.
[ ]
A.immigrants who still retain their tradition, but behave like Americans in some ways
B.immigrants who still retain their own language, but speak English sometimes
C.immigrants who reject the traditions of their parents, and accept Western culture only
D.immigrants, naturalized by native American culture, in character, way of thinking etc. though still retaining some ethnic heritage

Decision-thinking is not unlike poker(扑克牌)--it often matters not only what you think, but also what others think you think and what you think they think you think. The mental process(过程) is similar. Naturally, this card game has often been of considerable interest to people who are, by any standards, good thinkers.
The great mathematician John Von Neumann was one of the founders of game theory. In particular, he showed that all games fall into two classes: there are what he called games of‘perfect information’, games like chess where the players can't hide anything or play tricks, they don't win by chance, but by means of logic and skills. Then there are games of‘imperfect information’, like poker, in which it is impossible to know in advance that one course of action is better than another.
One mistaken idea about business is that it can be treated as a game of perfect information. Quite the reverse, business, politics, life itself are games which we must normally play with very imperfect information. Business decisions are often made with many unknown and unknowable factors(因素) which would even puzzle(困惑) best poker players. But few business people find it comfortable to admit that they are taking a chance, and many still prefer to believe that they are playing chess, not poker.
1.The subject discussed in this text is _____.
[ ]
A.the process of reaching decisions
B.the value of information in winning games
C.the secret of making good business plans
D.the difference between poker and chess
2.An important factor in game of imperfect information is _____.
[ ]
A.rules B.luck
C.time D.idea
3.Which of the following can be used in place of“Quite the reverse”?
[ ]
A.Quite right. B.Just the opposite.
C.Most unlikely. D.True enough.
4.In the writer's opinion, when making business decisions one should _____.
[ ]
A.put perfect information before imperfect information
B.regard business as a game of chess
C.accept the existence of unknown factors
D.mix known and unknown factors

Three Yale University professors agreed in a discussion that the automobile was what one of them called“Public Health Enemy No. 1 in this country.”Besides polluting the air and overcrowding the cities, cars are involved in more than half the disastrous accidents, and they contribute to heart disease“because we don't walk anywhere anymore”, said Dr. H. Richard Weinerman, professor of medicine and public health.
Speaking of many of these man-made dangers to the automobile, Arthur W. Galston, professor of biology, said it was possible to make a kerosene-burning turbine car that would“lessen smog by a very large factor.”But he expressed doubt whether Americans were willing to give up moving about the countryside at 90 miles an hour in a large vehicle.“America seems wedded to the motor car--every family has to have at least two, and one has to be a convertible (敞篷汽车) with 300 horsepower,”Professor Galston continued.“Is this the way of life that we choose because we treasure these values?”
For Professor Sears, part of the blame lies with“a society that regards profit (赢利) as a supreme value, under the illusion that anything that's technically possible is, therefore, morally justified”. Professor Sears also called the country's dependence on its modern automobiles“terrible economics”because of the large horsepower used simply“moving one individual to work.”But he admitted that Americans have painted themselves into a corner by allowing the national economy to become so dependent on the automobile industry.
“The solution”, Dr. Weinerman said,“is not to find a less dangerous fuel but a different system of inner-city transportation. Because of the increasing use of cars, public transportation has been allowed to wither (衰弱) and grow worse, so that if you can't walk to where you want to go, you have to have a car in most cities,”he declared. This, in turn, Dr. Weinerman contended, is responsible for the“arteriosclerosis”(动脉硬化) of public roads, for the pollution of the inner city and for the middle-class movement to the suburbs.
1.The main idea of the passage is that _____.
[ ]
A.Americans are fond of their cars
B.public transportation in America is well-developed
C.American cars are too fast
D.automobiles endanger health
2.It can be inferred from the passage that _____.
[ ]
A.people are more interested in fast automobiles than in their health
B.Americans feel more closely tied to their cars than to their wives
C.kerosene-burning engines would pollute the environment more than gasoline-burning engines do
D.kerosene-burning cars would go faster than gasoline-powered cars
3.In Paragraph 3,Professor Sears implies that _____.
[ ]
A.technology is always good for people
B.technology is not always good for people
C.financial profit is more important than technology advancement
D.American people care about both environment pollution and technological development
4.According to Dr. Weinerman, the solution is that _____.
[ ]
A.public transportation should be improved so that people can become less dependent upon their cars for inner-city transportation
B.people should get rid of their cars and take the bus to work
C.one family should own just one car
D.a fuel less dangerous than gasoline must be found

Dressed in her light-blue school uniform. Yang Shasha looks like any other girl at Beijing No. 66 Middle School. Yet uneasiness and tiredness can be seen in her eyes.
“The final examination is just around the corner. My mum and teachers have already put demands on me. I have to stay up late to study.”Yang complained.
Although Yang does not speak much in class, she often loses her temper at home and has trouble falling asleep.
Yang's case is not unusual. Problems caused by psychological pressure have affected more and more middle school students in recent years. These include extreme worrying, arguments with parents, misunderstandings between classmates and puppy love and so on.
According to a teacher from the Central Education and Research Institute, about 10 percent of China's middle school students have psychological problems.
According to Kang Jianghua, the director of the Moral Education Section at Beijing No. 66 Middle School, there are three main reasons for these problems.
Some parents do everything for their children, so the kids never develop abilities to deal with practical matters or to adapt themselves to changes.
In addition, some schools overlook psychological education. Grades become the only standard by which a student is judged.
To make it worse, most students don't realize how serious emotional and psychological problems can be. Some do not see these problems as unhealthy.
“Ask a doctor for help? I don't think I have a problem.”said Yang.
But according to the World Health Organization, a person's psychological state is a very important standard by which to judge whether or not a person is healthy.
Psychological pressure need to be dealt with properly and quickly. If they are not, they will drive a person in worries, depression (抑郁) and distraction. Students with these problems cannot concentrate on their studies. Some even become violent towards their friends and families.
Psychological problems for middle school students have already made teachers worry.
At Chengdu Yulin Middle School, psychological experts are regularly invited to discuss all kinds of problems faced by students. The students can also choose to talk to the experts on the phone or to send them letters.
“Family and school are just the outer push to help children. Students should strengthen their sense of self-confidence and courage to face problems and difficulties in life,”said Kang.
1.Which of the following is NOT one of the main reasons for psychological problems according to Kang?

Pred Michael is one of 7.2 million Americans who moonlight or hold more than one job.
Once a week, after his day job as medical director of a mental health center, the 40-year-old psychiatrist heads to a part-time job at a treatment center for young people. Twice a month, he travels three hours to another teenage treatment center.
Last year, 5.4 percent of the American work force held second jobs, according to the US Labor Department, and that looks set to increase this year.
Many workers like the safety that moonlighting provides says Carl Hausamn, the writer of“Moonlighting: 148 Great Ways to Make Money to the Side.”
The information from the US Labor Department shows that 40 percent of US moonlighters in 1997 took a second job to meet household expenses or pay off debts. Others save money or buy some special things.
People also take second jobs with an eye to the future--wanting to try out a new field or gain experience.
Michael started moonlighting when medical systems were unstable. He wanted to make sure he wasn't tied to one system that ended up failing.
Just as the purposes for moonlighting vary, the moonlighters cross all age and racial groups. And they work in a variety of industries--no longer just service, office and sale jobs.
“Technology just affects your ability to make money,”Hausman says.“That makes a frequent change in moonlighting.”
As its name means, moonlighting still occurs mostly at night. And that results in some pressures. Chief among them is time.
Full-time employers could misunderstand, too. Some companies do not allow after-hour work because they fear it will affect their employees' 9-to-5 performance.
“The primary employer is saying,‘Wait, I'm paying you for the sharp, fresh, energetic you.’”says Tom Gimbel, president and founder of LaSalle Staffing in Chicago.“If you're burning yourself at both ends, it's going to show.”
Still, the good done to the moonlighters can be great. Besides extra income, moonlighters enjoy variety, freedom and chance to do something new. They also may find their part-time jobs strengthen what they do full time.
Besides,“It's fun,”Michael says. Not only do his part-time jobs offer a chance to network, stretch his professional, skills and make more money, but they also give him the variety he wouldn't find just in a full-time job.
“It's a way of pulling from the spice cabinet,”he says,“and offering a little variety throughout the day.”
1.What is the passage mainly about?
[ ]
A.The ways of moonlighting.
B.The reasons for moonlighting.
C.The problems with moonlighting.
D.The kinds of people who moonlight.
2.The reason why Fred Michael began to moonlight is that _____.
[ ]
A.he found it exciting to do a part-time job
B.he needed to make ends meet with more money
C.he feared he would lose his present job one day
D.he felt more and more pressure from his employer
3.Some companies don't allow their workers to moonlight because they are afraid that _____.
[ ]
A.their workers can not do extra-hour work for them
B.their workers will be too tired to try their best at work
C.their workers will one day turn to some other different jobs
D.their workers will not get to work and be off work on time
4.The underlined sentence“It's a way of pulling from the spice cabinet.”in the last paragraph means“_____”.
[ ]
A.Moonlighting gets you away from the job you don't enjoy
B.Moonlighting offers you freedom to make extra money
C.Moonlighting strengthens your professional skills
D.Moonlighting brings you chances to do something different

American pilot Frank Webb first flew a glider at the age of 14, made his first flight alone on his 16th birthday and got his commercial pilot's license on his 18th birthday.
After serving in the US Navy for 20 years, being a flight instructor, and working with Alaska Airlines for more than three years, Webb signed a contract with Shenzhen Airlines last May to captain domestic routes in China. As an experienced pilot, he still feels the same nervousness as he felt on his first fight.
Captain Webb said that the“Sept. 11”incident did not have a direct influence on his decision to move to China to work.“Safety is in fact tighter in the United States and I am not worried about a terrorist attack,”he said.“The main reason I came to China was that my children will have a chance to see the world and experience international living.”
Webb has not experienced any in-flight emergencies during, his term in China although he said the weather here was generally more changeable than in the United States.“The weather changes tend to be great from north to south. We may be flying in a snow storm in Harbin, and then later that same day we may be flying through a tropical rain shower approaching Shenzhen,”Webb said.
While Webb had more flexibility (灵活性) to deal with the weather in the United States, he said air traffic control in China was more strict and allowed fewer deviations(偏离).
Speaking of planes often being late in China, Webb said that in America, being late was one of the few things that would get him in trouble.“In China, on the other hand, it seems there are many things that can get you in trouble with the boss, but being late is not one of them.”Webb does everything in his power to keep his flights on schedule.
“They provide really excellent service during flights. Western flight attendants just serve passengers. But the Chinese attendants will also check on the crew to see if we need anything,”Webb said.

The shopping malls are designed for only one thing: encouraging people to buy, buy, buy. How do they do this? Well, it is something of an art, an art that has been brought to perfection in the 50 years since malls first started appearing in America.
Every aspect(方面) of mall design is carefully considered to appeal to(吸引) the customer's psychological(心理的) needs. This starts with the overall environment. Tests have shown that people feel most relaxed and comfortable at a temperature of 24-26 degrees. So, this is the air temperature of most malls. If it is any hotter, people may become too lazy to walk. Any cooler, they may rush around and leave before they've spent enough money.
The choice of colors is also very important. Dark colors like orange or purple can make people feel irritable or unhappy. With such feelings, they are not likely to do much shopping. Therefore, very dark colors are almost never used in malls. Instead, walls are usually painted in light colors, which make customers feel relaxed and give the mail a spacious feeling.
The arrangement of space in the mall is also done with great care. Research shows that most people are unwilling to walk more than two hundred meters to shop. In one of the new giant malls this could be a problem. The walkways in malls can be made curved(弯曲的) or angled to hide their true length. Or they can be broken up by fountains(喷泉), art displays or any of those other things that you thought were just there to entertain you.
1.From this passage we know that malls _____.
[ ]
A.are where people go for entertainment
B.came into being in the early 1950s in America
C.are places for art displays and social activities
D.have been perfect places for shopping since they were born
2.According to this passage, a mall with dark-coloured walls _____.
A.is likely to enjoy good business
B.looks peaceful and pleasant
C.costs more to be lighted
D.is likely to have poor business
3.What are the fountains and art displays for in a mall?
[ ]
A.To make the walkways seem shorter as well as entertain the customers.
B.Just to make the customers feel happy when they are taking a rest.
C.To cool the mall so that the customers will buy more.
D.To beautify the mall to attract more customers and children.
4.Which of the following best expresses the main idea of the passage?
[ ]
A.Malls are the best places to do shopping in.
B.The choice of colors is very important in designing malls.
C.Malls are carefully designed to encourage people to buy more and more.
D.Without good service there will be no good business.

Washington--Laura Straub is a very worried woman. Her job is to find families for French teenagers who expect to live with American families in the summer.
It's not easy, even desperate(希望渺小).
“We have many children left to place: 40 out of 75”, said Straub, who works for a Paris-based foreign-exchange programme called LEC.
When the exchange programme started 50 years ago, family life was more accommodating. For one thing, more mothers stayed home.
But now, increasing numbers of women work outside home. Exchange-student programmes have struggled in recent years to sign up host families for the 30000 teenagers who annually come from abroad to spend all academic year in the United States, as well as the thousands more who participate in summer programmes.
School systems in many parts of the US, unhappy about accepting non-taxpaying students, have also strictly limited the number of exchange students they accept. At the same time, the idea of hosting foreign students is becoming less exotic(异国情调的).
In searching for host families, who usually receive no pay, exchange programmes are increasingly broadening their appeals(呼吁) to include everyone from young couples to retirees.
“We are open to many different types of families,”said Vickie Weiner, eastern regional director for ASSE, a 25-year old programme that sends about 30000 teenagers on academic-year exchange programme worldwide.
For elderly people, exchange students“keep us young--they really do,”said Jean Foster, who is hosting 16-year-old Nina Porst Denmark.
