The kids at Shute Country Primary School in Devon are surprisingly quiet when it's time to go home in the afternoon. Instead of the usual shouting and running you can hear them asking each other,“Are the lights all off?”“Shall we check the taps in case they are dripping?”“How many paper towels did we use today?”

But it's not unusual here. The kids have declared a war on waste.

“We've never made the children do anything.”explained Liz Templar, the school's head teacher.“They came up with all the ideas themselves. They're doing this because they want to.”

If you take a look around the school you won't see anything thrown away unnecessarily. Everything is collected and reused, or sent to be recycled.

Shute School started its green revolution two years ago. They looked carefully at every part of school life--from the teaching to the cleaning. They looked at the stationery(文具) that was used--especially photocopying, the way cleaning was carried out, and how food was used--and wasted!

Even parents were looked at: how many children came in each car? Did they use unleaded petrol? Could they bring more children in fewer cars?

High on the list was the waste of paper. Next came unfriendly cleaning products. Paper towels were replaced with recycled paper, but the hardest thing for the kids was when they found out how much rubbish was created by the chocolate, crisps and other snacks(小吃) eaten at lunch time. Of their own accord(自愿地), the children gave them up. Now they bring apples and home-made snacks.

The school has its own garden where they grow vegetables and flowers so that they can learn about the environment. They also use this area for their recycling store--large containers to collect aluminium, bottles, paper and fabric(织物).

Even the school's play area is made from recycled things.

Since the children started, the school's heating and lighting bills have fallen obviously and the number of rubbish bags has gone down from seven a week to two or three.

Everywhere in Shute School there are bright posters asking everyone to take their rubbish home, to save energy and paper and to keep the green flag flying.

1.Which of the following is the major information we get from the passage?

A.create less rubbish

B.save money

C.obey the school's rules

D.keep their promise

3.We can infer from the text that“green revolution” means _____.

[ ]

A.beautifying schoolyard

B.activity against waste

C.planting green plants

D.throwing away waste

4.What do the children think creates the most waste?

[ ]

A.Paper towels.

Have you ever got stuck with unwanted courses or a class schedule that cannot be changed? If so, that's because you don't know how to select the perfect schedule. But by following simple steps, you can begin any term with the right courses at the most convenient times.

First, you must find the right course. These are the ones that have the least amount of work. the fewest tests and the kindest professors. Ask your friends about courses in which they received A's after attending only 70 percent of the classes. Ask around, too, to see which instructors have given the same tests for the last fifteen years. Photocopies of these tests are usually cheap and can be easily found in school. Then, pick up a copy of the master schedule and study it carefully. Find the course titles that mean an easy pass for a painless subject. Look for titles like“Arts and Crafts for Beginners”and“Rock Music of the 1950s”.

Next, when you have got lists of easy instructors and subjects, you can begin to select your time periods. If you stay up late in order to watch old movies, you may want a daily schedule that begins no sooner than noon. You should schedule only afternoon courses, too, if you're one of those people who hate to leave a warm bed in the morning. On the other hand, if you are a person who gets out of bed at dawn, you may want to get your classes out of the way as early as possible. That way you have the rest of the day free. Morning classes are also necessary if you are a soap opers(肥皂剧) fan.

Finally, you want your schedule to pass through registration successfully. The main way to do this is to register(注册) early. If a course does happen to be closed because you simply couldn't register at 7:00 a. m., you may still be able to get in. Talk to the professor and tell him or her that a serious and hardworking student like yourself would be a shining example to other students. Be sure to carry a list of back-up courses to registration, though, just in case one of your chosen classes changes professors or time periods.

By following these suggestions, any student can pick the perfect class schedule. College can thus become an almost pleasant activity.

1.Which of the following statements is true?

[ ]

A.You can get copies of tests if you are willing to pay the price.

B.“Rock Music of the 1950s”may be an easy course.

C.It is difficult to pick the perfect class schedule.

D.Attendance is required in all classes.

2.You should _____.

[ ]

A.register for classes in the morning if you get up early

B.have classes late in the morning if you stay up late

C.sign up for afternoon classes if you want to see soap operas

D.choose classes in the evening if you want to watch old films

3.If a course happens to be closed, you should _____.

[ ]

A.register at 7:00 a. m.

B.sit in on the class anyway

C.register for a back-up course

D.get help from the professor

4.Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?

[ ]

A.Course Registration Made Easy

B.How to Find the Right Courses

C.Classes and After-class Activities

D.How to Pick the Perfect Schedule

A new era is upon us. Call it what you will. the service economy, the information age, the knowledge society. It all translates to a basic change in the way we work. Already we're partly there. The percentage of people who earn their living by making things has fallen seriously in the Western World. Today the majority of jobs in America, Europe and Japan(two thirds or more in many of these countries) are in the service industry, and the number is on the rise. More women are in the work force than ever before. There are more part-time jobs. More people are self-employed. But the breadth of the economic transformation cannot be measured by numbers alone, because it also is giving rise to a completely new way of thinking about the nature of work itself. Long held ideas about jobs and careers, the skills needed to succeed, even the relation between employees and employers--all these are being challenged.

We have only to look behind us to get some sense of what may lie ahead. No one looking ahead 20 years possibly could have foreseen the ways in which a single invention, the chip, would transform our world thanks to its applications in personal computers, digital communications and factory robots. Tomorrow's achievements in biotechnology, artificial intelligence or even some still unimagined technology could produce a similar wave of dramatic changes. But one thing is certain., information and knowledge will become even more important, and the people who possess it, whether they work in manufacturing(制造业) or services, will have the advantage and produce the wealth. Computer knowledge will become as basic a requirement as the ability to read and write. The ability to solve problems by applying information instead of performing normal tasks will be valued above all else. If you cast your mind ahead 10 years, information services will be the most important. It will be the way you do your job.

1.A characteristic of the information age is that _____.

[ ]

A.most of the job opportunities can now be round in the service industry

B.manufacturing industries are steadily increasing

C.people find it harder and harder to earn a living by working in factories

D.the service industry is relying more and more on the female work force

2.By referring to computers and other inventions, the author means to say that _____.

[ ]

A.people should be able to act quickly to the advancement of technology

B.the importance of high technology has not been realized

C.future achievements in technology will bring about unbelievable dramatic changes

D.computer science will play a leading role in future information services

3.The future will probably belong to those who _____.

[ ]

A.give full play to their brain ability

B.possess and know how to make use of information

C.earn their living in servie industries

D.cast their minds ahead instead of looking back

4.Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?

[ ]

A.Computers and the Knowledge Society

B.Service Industries in Modern Society

C.Characteristic and Meaning of the New Era

D.Rapid Advancement of Information Technology

Liz and Bill, two college graduates in their early 20s, have spent a whole year trying to have thousands of people talk to them in subway stations and on busy street corners. Just talk.

Using a 2-foot-tall sign that says,“Talk to Me,”they attract conversationalists, who one evening included a mental patient, and men in business suits.

Marcia had lost her husband to a serious disease.“That was very heavy on my mind,”Marcia said.“To be able to talk about it to total strangers was very good,”she explained.

To celebrate a year of talking, the two held a get-together in a city park for all the people they had met over the past year. A few hundred people showed up, as well as some television cameramen and reporters.

Parties held by the wealthy seldom welcome poor guests. But last week China made it through the doors into a gathering of the world's richest countries.

Jim Renqing, China's finance minister, and Zhou Xiaochuan, governor of the People's Bank of China, joined a meeting of the Group of Seven (G7) on October 1,2004. It is the first time that China has had direct talks with the club. It was a good chance to share the world powers' thoughts about critical economic issues and promote understanding.

China's participation is a natural part of its increasingly important role in the global economy. China is the world's factory and the biggest market.

America and China made up almost half of global economic growth last year.“If American consumers and Chinese producers were to reduce their activities at the same time, global growth would drop greatly,”said the Economist, a leading British economics magazine.

Up to now Chinese economic stability has been closely related to world development.“The increasingly connected global economy means that China should be a part of the meeting.”said Stephen Roach, a world famous economist.

During the meeting, China represented developing countries. It called on the world's developed nations to increase their spending on aid to poorer countries. When your parents advise you to“get an education”in order to raise your income, they tell you only half the truth. What they really mean is to get just enough education to provide manpower for your society, but not so much that you prove an embarrassment to your society.

Get a high school diploma, at least. Without that, you will be occupationally dead unless your name happens to be George Bernard Shaw or Thomas Alva Edison, and you can successfully drop out in grade school.

Get a college degree, if possible. With a B. A., you are on the launching pad (火箭发射台). But now you have to start to put on the brakes. If you go for a master's degree, make sure it is an MBA, which is to bring you returns.

Do you know, for example, that truck drivers earn more per year than full professor? Yes, the average 1977 salary for those truckers was $24,000, while the full professors managed to earn just $23,030.

A Ph. D. is the highest degree you can get. Except for a few specialized fields such as physics or chemistry where the degree can quickly be turned to industrial or commercial purposes, if you seek such a degree in any other field, you will face a dim future. There are more Ph.D. s unemployed or underemployed in this country than any other part of the world.

If you become a doctor of philosophy in English or history or political science or languages or worst of all--in philosophy, you run the risk of becoming overeducated for our national demands. Not for our needs, mind you, but for our demands.

Thousands of Ph. D. s are selling shoes, driving cars, waiting on table, and endlessly filling out applications month after month. They may also take a job in some high school or backwater(穷乡僻壤的) college that pays much less than the doorkeeper earns.

You can consider the level of income to be equal to the level of education only so far. Far enough, that is, to make you useful to the gross national product (GNP), but not so far that nobody can turn much of a profit on you.

1.According to the writer, what the society expects of education is to turn out people who _____.

[ ]

A.will not be a disgrace to society

B.will become loyal citizens

C.can take care of themselves

D.can meet the nation's demands as a source of manpower

2.Many Ph.D. s are out of job because _____.

[ ]

A.they are improperly educated

B.they are of little commercial value to their society

C.there are fewer jobs in high schools

D.they prefer easier jobs that make more money

3.Which of the following is NOT true?

[ ]

A.Bernard Shaw didn't finish high schools, nor did Edison.

B.One must think carefully before pursuing a master degree.

C.The higher your education level is, the more money you will earn.

D.If you are too well-educated, you may be overeducated for society's demands.

4.The nation is only interested in people _____.

[ ]

A.with diplomas

B.who specialize in physics and chemistry

C.who are valuable to the gross national product

D.who have got doctor's degree

In the late 1500s, a large powerful gun was placed on top of the Signal Hill, in Newfoundland, to prevent attacks from the outside. Flags were also flown there to warn sailors of bad weather. It's fitting, then, the Italian Gulielmo Marconi should have chosen this site to receive the world's first radio signal--in Morse code--from England on December 12, 1901.

Marconi, combining earlier ideas with his own, led us to a new communications age. For the next 50 years, until the appearance of television, radio ruled the air waves.

Today, it's the TV that rules. No single person can say to have invented television.

In 1884, the German Paul Nipkow invented a device that sent pictures mechanically, and in 1906, Boris Rosing, a Russian, used a ray and a disc to create the world's first TV system. Then in the early 1920s, another Russian, Vladimir Zworykin, invented a picture display tube. He took out a patent for color TV, even though it wouldn't be developed for another 25 years.

In 1924, a Scot entered the scene--John Logic Baird. He first succeeded in sending a moving picture and a year later got the first actual TV picture. In 1926, Baird showed TV in a London laboratory. Two years later in New York, Felix the Cat became the first TV star.

TV excited everyone's imagination, but hardly anyone had a set, with just two thousand in use worldwide in the mid-1930s.

Since the late 1940s, TV technology has developed very quickly. Computers may finally be combined with all televisions to give people a total all-in-one communications network.

Today, it's possible to sit and watch TV in the middle of a forest or in the Arctic. It's surprising when one considers that Marconi was on Signal Hill in the same century.

1.We can learn from the text that Signal Hill was once used as _____.

[ ]

A.a site of communication

B.a weather station

C.a factory to produce weapons

D.a battle field to fight enemies from the outside

2.When the writer says that today it is the TV that rules, he means that the TV _____.

[ ]

A.has led to a new communications age

B.is a major means of today's communication

C.is a device invented with ideas from Marconi

D.has replaced the radio in today's communication

3.What is the main idea of Paragraphs 4 and 5?

[ ]

A.London is the place where TV is invented.

B.John Logie Baird was the chief inventor of television.

C.A number of people contributed to the invention of television.

D.Russian scientists played an important role in the invention of television.

4.The writer believes that the day will come when _____.

[ ]

A.the future computers will be able to do the work TV is now doing

B.the future computers will become available to every one in the world

C.the future computers will be connected to create one international network

D.the future computers will take the place of televisions and radios

5.Which of the following would the writer probably agree with?

[ ]

A.Rarely do people listen to the radio nowadays.

B.Radios and televisions will disappear completely in the near future.

C.Radio and television communications developed surprisingly fast in the 20th century.

D.Marconi contributed a great deal to the development of computer communication.

While the rest of the world carried on cycling during the 1950s and 1960s, America forgot how even high-school children would drive to school. Recently there has been something of a renaissance(复兴) in cycling, and in many areas it is a very useful way of getting around, especially where bike paths or bike routes have been built. You may well want to buy, hire or borrow a bike.

There are two important consequences(后果) of this earlier drop in cycling in the USA. One is that many people do not know how to cycle. That is, cyclists often behave more like pedestrians(行人) than motorists: they ride on the sidewalk or on the wrong side of the road;they do not care for stop signs or traffic lights; they ride without lights at night; they give no hand signals. The other consequence is that cycling is regarded by many people not so much as a way of getting from one place to another but as a way of life, a form of exercise, etc. As a result, large numbers of young Americans have ten-speed racing bikes. These are very high and fast and great if you are cycling long distances, riding up mountains or racing. At first, though, you may find them awkward for cycling in town, sight-seeing or shopping--they are expensive, uncomfortable and hard to control until you get used to them, and unsuitable for rough stony roads.

There are also ordinary bikes around. If you get hold of one of these, you may find that the brakes work by pedaling(蹬车) backwards. This is perhaps safer than ordinary brakes when it is wet, but it seems to be less effective. This arrangement also means you can't pedal backwards in order to get the pedals in the right place for getting on or moving off.

1.The passage gives us a brief introduction to _____.

[ ]

A.advantages of bikes

B.cycling in America

C.American transportation

D.how to ride a bike

2.Young Americans prefer racing bikes because they _____.

[ ]

A.provide exciting exercise

B.are easy to learn

C.are safer to ride

D.are expensive and popular

3.Which of the following does NOT result from the early drop in cycling in the USA?

[ ]

A.Cyclists do not care for traffic lights.

B.People ride on the wrong side of the roads.

C.Cycling is not considered a way of transportation.

D.People have to pedal backwards to stop the bike.

4.From the passage we can learn that in the middle of the 20th century _____.

[ ]

A.many Americans enjoyed cycling

B.cycling was popular outside America

C.racing bikes were better than ordinary ones

D.there were no special roads for bikes in America
