Written records indicate that in 1153 B.C., workers in the city of Thebes, Egypt protested receiving the same food every day, as well as their overall working conditions. This was the first recorded disagreement between labor and management. About 800 years later, the first strike happened. Aristos, originally from Greece, led the strike in Rome against his master in protest of meal breaks, which were too short. The tradition of organizing workers to protest unfair conditions has continued to the present. Today, labor unions stand up for the rights of workers using collective bargaining techniques. These unions, which exist all around the world, take two basic forms -- voluntary unions, bureaucratic(官僚政治的) unions.

Voluntary, or free unions, leave the choice of membership up to individuals. Not everyone must join the union, but enough people do join so that the union keeps power in the workplace. The purpose of this type of union is to establish a good living standard for employees and also to protect this standard during times of economic difficulty. Countries where this type of union is popular include most of Western Europe, Britain, Ireland, the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and Japan.

Membership in bureaucratic unions is also voluntary, but because these unions are closely connected to political parties in the countries where these unions operate, members of the party include themselves as members of the union. This type of union's main purpose is to set up good relations between the ruling government and members of the union. Political and social reforms are the main goals of this type of union. Bureaucratic unions are found in Latin America, and some Asian and African countries.

When unions and employers do not see eye to eye on an issue, the union sends some of its workers to meet with the employers and try to reach an agreement. However, collective bargaining does not always sufficiently influence policy makers. When this technique fails to meet the union goals, a strike may be called. Strikes may take several different forms including pickets, sit-down strikes, and also general strikes in which labor for an entire region may stop. Unions have found that strikes are the most effective in times when unemployment is low and economic conditions are good.

1. Where did the first strike occur?

2. What are the two basic forms of unions?

3. What do voluntary unions work toward?

4. What do bureaucratic unions work toward?

Technology has been an encouragement of historical change. It acted as such a force in England beginning in the eighteenth century, and across the entire Western World in the nineteenth. Rapid advances were made in the use of scientific findings in the manufacture(制造)of goods, which has changed ideas about work. One of the first changes was that other forms of energy have taken the place of human power. Along with this came the increased use of machines to manufacture products in less time. People also developed machines that could produce the same parts for a product each nail was exactly like every other nail, meaning that each nail could be changed for every other nail. This means that goods could be mass production, although mass production required breaking production down into smaller and smaller tasks.

Once this was done, workers no longer started on the product and labored to complete it. Instead, they might work only one thousandth of it, other workers completing their own parts in certain order. There is nothing strange about this manufacturing work by today's standards. Highly skilled workers were unable to compare with the new production techniques, as mass production allowed goods of high standard to be produced in greater number than could ever be done by hand. But the skilled worker wasn't the only loser, the common workers lost too. Similar changes forced farmers away. The increased mechanization(机械化)of agriculture freed masses of workers from ploughing the land and harvesting its crops. They had little choice but to stream toward the rapidly developing industrial centers. Increasingly, standards were set by machines. Workers no longer owned their own tools, their skill was no longer valued, and pride in their work was no longer possible. Workers fed, looked after and repaired the machines that could work faster than humans at greatly reduced cost.

Chinese premier Wen Jiabao called the landmark debut flight a“complete success”. The descent capsule(返回舱)carrying Lt. Col. Yang Liwei touched down on the grasslands of the Gobi Desert, in central Inner Mongolia at 6∶23 am Thursday(Beijing Time), the Beijing-based China's Aerospace Command and Control Center said. Minutes later, Yang grabbed the capsule hatch with his hand, pulled himself out, smiled and waved at recovery teams and reporters.“It is a splendid moment in the history of my motherland and also the greatest day of my life,”Yang, a former fighter pilot from Northeast China's Liaoning Province, said immediately after emerging. As you are students of English, it's very possible that you'll be interested in England. That's where the language was first spoken. But England is often called by other names. This often confuses people and I wonder if you know what these names mean. So, now I would like to tell you about this matter of names. I believe that you have heard people use the names--England, Britain or Great Britain. Let's see what each of these names means.

If you look at a map of Europe, you'll see a group of islands--one larger island off the northwest coast, one smaller and many tiny ones. These make up what is called the British Isles. The largest island of the British Isles is Britain. It is also called Great Britain. The smaller island is Ireland.

Britain is divided into three parts: Scotland, Wales and England. But sometimes the word“England”is used instead of“Britain”.Why so?

In ancient times, what is Britain now used to be three different countries. People in these different countries spoke different language. Over many years the three countries became one. England is the largest and richest of the three and it has the most people. So the English people take it for granted that their own name stands for the whole island.

There's another thing that confuses people: sometimes you may hear people say“the Untied Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland”. That is the official name of the country. Northern Ireland is only one sixth of the island of Ireland. The rest of the island is an independent state, called the Republic of Ireland. So we have the names of“England”,“Britain”,“Great Britain”, and“the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland”. Now do you know what each of them means?

As you look up at the moon, you can use a simple trick (戏法)to find out if it's waxing or waning. We can tell the moon is waxing when it's on its way to becoming full. We can tell the moon is waning when it's losing silver each night.

Here's the trick. Look at the moon, and draw an imagining line where the centre would be if the moon were full. Start at the bottom, and draw the line up the middle and past the top of the moon. The line and the lit side of the moon will form either a lower case of “b” or “d”.

The “b” stands for “baby”. The baby moon is on its way to full moon phase (阶段). It will appear to grow each night until it is perfectly round.

The “d” stands for “dying”. The dying moon is headed toward the new moon phase. It will seem to become smaller each night until it can no longer be seen in the sky.

As the moon travels round the earth the moon appears to change shape. But in fact, the sun is simply lighting up different parts of the moon.

Students who say they never or hardly ever used dictionaries often speak English well but usually write poorly, because they make many mistakes.

The students who use dictionaries most do not learn especially well either. The ones who look up every new word do not read fast. Therefore they do not have time to read much. Those who use small two-language dictionaries have the worst problems. Their dictionaries often give only one or two words as a translation of English, but one English word often has many translations in a foreign language and one foreign word has many translations in English.

The most successful students are those who use large college edition dictionaries with about 100,000 words but do not use them too often. When they are reading, these students first try to get the general idea and understand new words from the context (上下文). Then they reread and use the dictionary to look up only key words that they still do not understand. They use dictionaries more for writing. If they are not sure how to spell a word, or divide it into syllables (音节), they always use a dictionary. Also, if they think a noun might have an unusual plural form or a verb might have an unusual past form, they check these in a dictionary.

(1) The writer tends to (倾向) think that________.

[ ]

A.choose a good dictionary, and you'll succeed in learning English

B.dictionaries are not very necessary to the students who learn English

C.it is very important for students to use good dictionaries properly

[ ]

A.that students shouldn't use small two-language dictionaries

B.what were the defects of small two-language dictionaries

C.why students should use large college edition dictionaries
