You have asked me for suggestions(½¨Òé)on how to get along in the US. It is 1 to give advice, but I think the following ¡°dos¡± and ¡°don¡¯ts¡± are helpful.
As a 2, it isn¡¯t easy to find anyone to 3 in a big city. However, here are my suggestions. First, get or borrow a 4 . Walk him several times a day. Americans love dogs and usually stop to talk to anyone with a dog. 5 try to eat in a cafeteria(×ÔÖú²Í¹Ý). People usually share tables and will sometimes talk to you 6 they see that you are a stranger. Next, take your dirty clothes to a laundry(¸ÉÏ´µê). It takes about an hour to wash and dry, and many people 7there. They often kill the 8 talking to the others, 9ask for information from a woman, if you are a 10 and from a man, if you are a woman. It seems to get 11 results for a reason I can¡¯t understand. Learn the 12 ¡°Please¡± , ¡°Thank you¡± and ¡°you¡¯re welcome¡± before you come and use them all the time! They usually work like magic(ħÊõ).
There¡¯re some things you shouldn¡¯t 13 . Don't tell the truth when people 14 ¡°How are you?¡± . They only 15 the answer to be ¡°Fine¡± . Never ask people their age, especially women! Everyone wants to be young. Don¡¯t tell heavy people they are 16 . Tell them they are losing weight(¼õ·Ê). Everyone wants to be 17. Don't be late for appointments(Ô¼»á). When someone says six o¡¯clock, be sure to be there by six. 18. Respect(×ðÖØ)19and expect everyone to be ¡°on time¡± .
Above all, don¡¯t worry! Just follow my advice and bring a lot of money and you will get along well. I hope I have been of some 20 to you.

Signs made up mainly of circles, crosses, or arrows, can occasionally be seen at the entrance of a house. They 1 that a tramp(Á÷À˺º) has been there. This special sign-language is often used by tramps to tell their 2 whether the people living in a certain house are hospitable(ºÃ¿ÍµÄ) or unfriendly, and to save them the trouble of making unnecessary 3 .
Quite by chance one day, I 4 a real tramp. He is such a rare sight these days that I stopped and 5 him from some distance away. He was dressed just as a tramp would be, in patched trousers and a jacket many sizes 6 big for him. On his head there was a shabby hat and his boots were so worn that they were almost coming 7 pieces. But the man himself looked 8 , as if he had not a care in the world. He put down a small bag by the front gate, and began 9 a sign left by a previous(ÏÈÇ°µÄ) caller. Although the sign was 10 to me, it must have been favorable to him, for his face lit up with 11 . He entered the gate and rang the bell. When the door opened, I saw him 12 his hat. But the conversation that took place was very 13 indeed, for before he said a few words, the door shut loudly in his face. I felt very sorry for him 14 he walked sadly out of the house. But just as quickly, his face lit up again and he moved 15 towards the gate. 16 he stopped, looked at the sign and shook 17 seriously as if he had made a big mistake. Digging deep into his pockets, he took out a piece of 18 , rubbed out the existing sign and 19 a new one in its place. Then he 20 his things and began walking to the next house, whistling as he went along.

When Chinese scientists unearthed more than 1 000 bamboo slips(Öñ¼ò) in a 2 000-year-old tomb in Hubei Province earlier this year, they were more 1 than happy.
How could they stop these 2 ancient works from being damaged by the light? As soon as the 3 dried out, they would break and the words written on them would be 4
forever.
Scientists have had 5 problems dealing with some of China¡¯s greatest discoveries. The Terracotta Warriors and Horses(±øÂíÙ¸) of the Qin Dynasty, 6 , lost their bright colors when they 7 after coming into contact with the air.
Fortunately, Chinese experts are now 8 modern techniques to protect 9 . They have started 10 the warriors with a very thin layer of chemical paint to protect them. This
11 absorbs sunlight and keeps out bacteria(ϸ¾ú), so the colors don¡¯t 12 .
13 the bamboo slips found in Hubei were water-logged(½þË®µÄ), another 14 is used. Scientists take out the water and 15 it with alcohol and special chemicals before letting the wood dry. However, not all solutions are 16 ones. In some cases, scientists have turned to history for an 17 .
For instance, the famous Longmen Grottoes(ÁúÃÅʯ¿ß) in Henan Province have 18 for more than 1 000 years because they are covered 19 a strange coating. But we have no 20 who put it there or what it is made from.
