Methods of training animals have changed greatly in recent years. Zoo keepers have always had problems getting the animals to leave their cages in order for the cages to be cleaned, and also training them to move indoors when appropriate(适当的). Another problem was that many of the large animals became listless and bored. In the last twenty years, scientists have done research on dolphins and whales, training them to obey commands. The scientists found they could get animals to obey by rewarding them with food and affection when they responded(反应) correctly.

Proper training allows the animals to receive the care they need. It was very difficult to get untrained animals, especially the larger ones, to stay still when they needed medical attention. Now they can be trained, on command, to remain still and even to allow blood samples(样本) to be taken and shots administered(执行). All this is finished through positive reinforcement, without the use of any force. Affection training, as this process is called, has been used with great success on a wide variety of zoo animals. Animal behavior experts have taught zoo keepers to train bears, tigers, monkeys, and many other species to behave in a way that provides for better animal-keeper interaction(相互作用). This training also keeps the animals from becoming bored and inactive.

Although some people proclaim(谴责) that this training is inhumane and cruel to animals, results have shown that captive(猎获的) animals who previously were not doing well flourish under the new training procedures.

61. The word “listless” means _______.

A. countless B. dangerous C. inactive D. active

62. Which of the following is a convincing conclusion based on this passage?

A. It is safe to pet any animal.

B. Many animals respond favorably to rewards and affection.

C. Animals in the wild can be trained.

D. Animals should not be kept in zoos.

63. The writer's purpose is to _______.

A. persuade people not to feed animals in the zoo

B. show how easy it is to train animals

C. explain method of training animals through rewards

D. criticize zoo keepers

64. Which of the following is an opinion?

A. Zoo keepers had problems in getting animals to leave their cages.

B. Training is cruel to animals.

C. Animals obey commands if they are trained to do so.

D. Many animals can be trained, on commands, to remain still.

The other day ,my friend Jane was invited to a 40th birthday party. The time printed on the invitation was 7:30 p.m..Jane went off with her husband, expecting a merry evening of wine, food and songs.

By 9:45, everybody was having great fun, but no food had appeared. Jane and David were restless.Other guests began whispering that, they, too, were starving. But no one wanted to leave ,just in case some food was about to appear. By 11:00, there was still no food, and everyone was completely off their heads. Jane and David left hungry and angry.

Their experience suggests that the words on the printed invitations need to be made clearer. Everyone reads and understands the invitations differently. Most of us would agree that 6:30&8:30 p.m.means drinks only, go out to dinner afterwards;8:00 p.m. or 8:30 p.m. means possible dinner, but 9:30 p.m. and any time thereafter means to eat food beforehand roll up late.

But this is not always the case. If asked to a students' party at 6:30 p.m., it is normal for guests not to appear before midnight, if at all ,and no one cares. Being the first to arrive—looking eager—is social death. When my mother is asked to a party for 6:30, she likes to be there, if not no time ,then no later than seven. My age group (late thirties )falls somewhere between the two, but because we still think we're young, we're probably closer to student-time than grown-up time.

The accepted custom at present is confusing (混乱的), sometimes annoying, and it often means you may go home hungry, but it does lend every party that precious element (成分) of surprise.

1.The underlined words“off their heads ”(in Paragraph 2) probably mean _________.

A.tired B.crazy C.curious D.hopeless

2.Jane and David's story is used to show that _________.

A.party -goers usually get hungry at parties

B.party invitations can be confusing

C.people should ask for food at parties

D.birthday parties for middle -aged people are dull

3. For some young people ,arriving on time for a students' party will probably be considered _________.

A.very difficult

B.particularly thoughtful

C.friendly and polite

D.socially unacceptable

4.According to the writer, people in their late thirties_________.

A.are likely to arrive late for a party

B.care little about the party time

C.haven't really grown up yet

D.like surprises at parties

5.What is the general idea of the text?

A.It's safe to arrive late just when food is served

B.It's wise to eat something before going to a party.

C.It's important to follow social rules of party-going.

D.It's necessary to read invitations carefully.

The easy way out isn't always easiest. I learned that lesson when I decided to treat Doug, my husband of one month, to a special meal. I glanced through my cookbook and chose a menu which included homemade bread. Knowing the bread would take time, I started on it as soon as Doug left for work. As I was not experienced in cooking, I thought if a dozen was good, two dozen would be better, so I doubled everything. As Doug loved oranges, I also opened a can of orange and poured it all into the bowl. Soon there was a sticky dough(面团) covered with ugly yellowish marks. Realizing I had been defeated, I put the dough in the rubbish bin outside so I would not have to face Doug laughing at my work. I went on preparing the rest of the meal, and, when Doug got home, we sat down to Cornish chicken with rice. He tried to enjoy the meal but seemed disturbed. Twice he got up and went outside, saying he thought he heard a noise. The third time he left, I went to the window to see what he was doing. Looking out, I saw Doug standing about three feet from the rubbish bin, holding the lid up with a stick and looking into the container. When I came out of the house, he dropped the stick and explained that there was something alive in our rubbish bin. Picking up the stick again, he held the lid up enough for me to see. I felt cold. But I stepped closer and the fermenting yeast(酵母) made the surface shake and sigh as though it were breathing. It looked like some unknown being from outer space. I could see why Doug was so shaken. I had to admit what the “living thing” was and why it was there. I don't know who was more embarrassed(尴尬) by the whole thing-Doug or me.

1.Why did the woman's attempt at making the bread turn out to be unsuccessful?

[ ]

A.The canned orange had gone bad.

B.She didn't use the right kind of flour.

C.The cookbook was hard to understand.

D.She did not follow the directions closely.

2.Why did the woman put the dough in the rubbish bin?

[ ]

A.She didn't see the use of keeping it.

B.She meant to joke with her husband.

C.She didn't want her husband to see it.

D.She hoped it would soon dry in the sun.

There have been few occasions(场合) on which I have actually walked out of the cinema halfway through a film. The first time this happened when I was watching a story for children about animals living in a small village, riding in trains, shopping, and so on; the animals were all real. It was a sweet little film till you started wondering how these animals could act in such a human-like way and began to look for the wires and things that forced them to do so. The moment which had me walking out was a scene of a fox giving a hen a shampoo(洗头) The look on the animals' faces and some signs of blood that appeared in the water were too much for me: how many hens died to make that particular scene?

The other two occasions on which I remember walking out were both when I had gone to see films that had appeared on some critics'(评论家的) list of the ten best films. Neither of them was interesting at all. In one the characters sat in a French country house, drinking and smoking and doing nothing except a little shooting. The other was about the life of a soldier in the First World War; it told me more about life in this period than I had any wish to know. For two out of ten films to be so uninteresting must show that critics love things of little interest, I've never been to see the other eight.

1.The passage mainly tells us ________.

[ ]

A.what films the writer liked and disliked

B.why the writer walked out of films

C.what the writer thought of film critics' remarks

D.why the writer didn't go to see the other eight films

Attitude is an internal(内在的)state that influences the choices of personal action made by the individual(个人).Some researchers consider that attitudes come from differences between beliefs and ideas; others believe that attitudes come from emotional states. Here, we focus on the effects of attitudes upon behavior, that is, upon the choices of action made by the individual.

The kinds of actions taken by human beings are obviously influenced greatly by attitudes.Whether one listens to classical music or rock, whether one obeys the speed limit while driving, whether one encourages one’s husband or wife to express his or her own ideas-all are influenced by attitudes. These internal states are acquired(获得)throughout life from situations one is faced with in the home, in the streets, and in the school.

Of course, the course of action chosen by an individual in any situation will be largely determined by the particulars of that situation. An individual who has a strong attitude of obeying laws may drive too fast when he is in a hurry and no police cars in sight.A child who has a strong attitude of honesty may steal a penny when she thinks no one will notice. But the internal state which remains unchanged over a period of time, and which makes the individual behave regularly in a variety of situations, is what is meant by an attitude.

Attitudes are learned in a variety of ways. They can result from single incidents, as when an attitude toward snakes is acquired by an experience in childhood at the sudden movement of a snake. They can result from the individual’s experiences of success and pleasure, as when someone acquires a positive attitude toward doing crossword puzzles by being able to complete some of them. And frequently, they are learned by copying other people’s behavior, as when a child learns how to behave toward foreigners by observing the actions of his parents.Regardless of these differences, there is something in common in the learning and modification(修正)of attitudes.

A.

Attitudes are only learned through one’s success.

Researchers are placing robotic dogs(机器狗)in the homes of lonely old people to determine whether they can improve the quality of life for humans.Alan Beck, an expert in human-animal relationship, and Nancy Edwards, a professor of nursing, are leading the animal-assisted study concerning the influence of robotic dogs on old people’s depression, physical activity, and life satisfaction.“No one will argue that an older person is better off being more active, challenged, or stimulated(刺激), ”Edwards points out.“The problem is how we promote(使……成为现实)that, especially for those without friends or help.A robotic dog could be a solution.”

In the study, the robot, called AIBO, is placed for six weeks in the houses of some old people who live alone. Before placing AIBO in the home, researchers will collect baseline data for six weeks. These old people will keep a diary to note their feelings and activity before and after AIBO.Then, the researchers will review the data to determine if it has inspired any changes in the life of its owner.

“I talk to him all the time, and he responds to my voice, ” says a seventy-year-old lady.“When I’m watching TV, he’ll stay in my arms until he wants down.He has a mind of his own.”

The AIBOs respond to certain orders. The researchers say they have some advantages over live dogs, especially for old people.Often the elderly are disabled and cannot care for an animal by walking it or playing with it.A robotic dog removes exercise and feeding concerns.

“At the beginning, it was believed that no one would relate to the robotic dog, because it was metal and not furry, ” Beck says.“But it’s amazing how quickly we have given up that belief.”

At a few minutes past five, Dave noted that the blanket of darkness was lifting. He was just able to make out the heavier masses that eventually appeared as the familiar trees that lined the road at the base of the hill. The upper reaches of the sky showed lighter shades of gray.

Dave got out of bed quietly and dressed quickly. He mixed a spoonful of instant chocolate into a glass of cold water, and his impatience forced him to finish the drink in gulps.
