　　Ten years ago, young students would have been proud to show off a new schoolbag or pencil box at the start of a term．But these days, it’s not enough．If going back to school only means new clothes and backpacks to you, you’re falling out-of-date．Teenagers in big cities now look for all the latest hi-tech things to show off to their classmates．Mobile phones, diskmans(CD players), MP3players, electronic dictionaries——the list is endless．

　　“We need to keep in touch with our friends as well as enjoy lives, so my parents understand why I need a mobile phone and a diskman．” Wu said．She often uses her mobile phone to text message to her friends．Like other teenagers, Wu loves to shop in CD stores, searching for new albums by her favorite singers——Jeff Chang, Jay Chou and Sun Yanzi．As for the Dictaphone, she said she used it in her science classes to play back her teachers’ lectures when going over the difficult parts at home．

　　According to Wu, 90 percent of her classmates have mobile phones and more than 85 percent have diskmans．The electronic dictionaries are helpful in English classes, so almost all students own one each．

　　Although many high school students each own a diskman or MP3 player, Sun Jun from Shanghai doesn’t．She isn’t interested in changing her old tape player for a newer CD player．However, she thinks a mobile phone is a must for her and each of her Senior 3 classmates．They don’t often go home, so it’s important for them, she says, to have mobile phone to keep in touch with their families．

　　My first day of high school was probably the worst day of my life．My parents were forcing me to attend a prep school(预科学校)45 minutes from my home．Out of a class of 110 incoming students in Grade 1, I knew no one．

　　I had spent the last eight years in a class with 30 kids, I had not had to make a new friend at school since the first grade．I had never felt as lonely as I did that day, before or since．So of course I entered school that first day in a bad mood．I was determined to show my parents what a stupid decision they had made．However, instead, I just depressed myself．

　　I joined after-school clubs, and I got to know some people; but I couldn’t make any friends．I was one of those people that everybody said hello to, and even invited to sit with them at lunch, but would never call on the phone, or go out with after school．

　　Besides social problems, this high school was academically challenging, while my junior-high was a piece of cake．After a full year of this, I was completely miserable．So I spent the summer making a few resolutions(决心)．

　　Maybe they can help some other people---they certainly helped me and by the end of my four years of high school, I had formed my group of friends, with whom I still keep in touch．I was even voted by the students of my class to speak at graduation．Miserable as I was that first year, the rest of high school was an enjoyable and exciting experience．

　　A man named Smith was sitting on his roof during a flood, and the water was up to his feet．Before long a fellow in a canoe paddled past and shouted,“Can I give you a lift to higher ground?”

　　“No, thanks,” said Smith．“I have faith in the Lord and he will save me．”

　　Soon the water rose to Smith’s waist．At this point a motor boat pulled up and some one called out,“Can I give you a lift to higher ground?”“No, thanks, I have faith in the Lord and he will save me．”

　　Later a helicopter flew by, and Smith was now standing on the roof with water up to his neck．“Grab the rope,”yelled the pilot(飞行员),“I’ll pull you up．”

　　“No, thanks,” said Smith．“I have faith in the Lord and he will save me．”But after hours of treading water, poor exhausted Smith drowned and went to his reward．As he arrived at the Pearly Gates, Smith met his maker and complained about his turn of evinced．“Tell me, Lord,”he said,“I had such faith in you to save me and you let me drown．What happened?”

　　Vacation can be from 2 weeks to 4 weeks a year．This usually depends on how long you’ve been working for a company, what type of position you have, whether you have a very high and important position and whether you can find someone to replace you．In this case, you might take a few days at a time rather than take one month all at once．Usually the more time you spend working for a company, the more time you may get for a vacation．

　　Here is some information about making international phone calls．

　　You can now phone any country in the world, although in some cases you can only call major cities．When you can’t make direct dialing(直拨)calls, you can ask the international operator to help you．This is more expensive and takes more time, but it may be helpful if you want to speak to a particular person and no one else; in this case you should ask for a “person-to-person” call．Even more expensive is a reverse charge call where the person who receives the call pays．

　　If the international line is busy you can reverse a call; explain the number you want the operator will call you back when the line is free．

　　You can save money by calling outside office hours, e．g．early in the morning, late at night and on Sundays．

　　Remember that the time may be different in the country you are calling．International time is based on GMT(Greenwich Mean Time); London is on GMT and Moscow．For example, is 3 hours ahead．

　　There is one problem：change to DST(Daylight Saving time)for the summer．In the UK, clocks are put forward one hour in spring and put back in autumn, and so London is actually one ahead of GMT in the summer．

　　Books that Moves the World

　　Mrs．Harriet Beecher Stowe, who was born in 1811, was not literary(文学)genius author like Charles Dickens, who did much to end terrible conditions in workhouse(济贫院)he described so well at the beginning of Oliver Twist．Yet one of her books not only made her famous, but has been described as one that stirred the world, and played a part in bringing on a civil war and freeing the enslaved race．The civil war was the American Civil War of 1861, in which the Northern States fought the Southern State and finally won．The Southern states were the slave-owning states, and the matter of slavery was one of the quarrels between the two sides．

　　This book that shook the world was called Uncle Tom’s Cabin．There was a time when practically every English-speaking man, woman and child had read this novel that did so much to abolish slavery．Not many people read it today, but it is still very interesting, if only to show how an enthusiastic(热情的)writer can arouse people’s sympathies(同情)．The author herself had neither been to the Southern states nor seen a slave．The Southern Americans were very angry at the book, which they said did not at all stand for the true state of affairs, but the Northern American were wildly excited over it, and were so inspired by it that there were ready even to go to war to set slaves free．
